Co-locating solar panels and battery storage can let a project share infrastructure and move solar energy to the hours it is more useful, including after sunset. It is not automatically cheaper or better than siting storage elsewhere: the result depends on system design, grid rules, operating value and project costs.
What co-location means—and what it does not
Co-location means solar generation and a battery are installed at the same site. That can allow them to share some project infrastructure, but it does not by itself define how they are electrically connected. A co-located system may be AC-coupled or DC-coupled, with different equipment and energy-conversion paths.
Physical location and electrical design are separate choices. A battery can also be sited apart from a solar facility; whether that is preferable depends on grid location, interconnection, costs and the service the battery is meant to provide.

Shift solar energy to later hours
Solar output can be high when demand is comparatively low, then fall as evening demand rises. A battery can charge during periods of abundant solar generation and discharge later, including after sunset. This shifts energy in time; it does not create additional energy. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that storage is not perfectly efficient because energy is lost during conversion and retrieval, while still allowing energy to be used at a different time from when it was generated (DOE’s solar and storage overview).

Help manage changing output and curtailment
When designed and controlled for the purpose, storage can help smooth rapid changes in solar output, such as fluctuations caused by clouds. It may also capture some energy that would otherwise be curtailed, but the amount depends on grid conditions and dispatch decisions. National Laboratory of the Rockies describes modeled DC-coupled configurations that can eliminate PV clipping events; that result should not be read as a guarantee that every battery will eliminate curtailment (NLR’s solar-plus-storage analysis).
Support backup power when configured for it
Solar-plus-storage can supply critical loads during a grid outage if the system is designed and configured to operate in backup mode. A standard grid-connected solar installation does not necessarily keep powering a home during an outage; backup operation depends on the system design and controls.

Control when electricity crosses the grid connection
A battery can change the timing of a project’s electricity exports to or imports from the grid. The DOE describes this flexibility as a major benefit of storage. It can be useful where export limits or other grid constraints matter, but interconnection processes and rules may not account for storage capabilities well and can add delay or expense (DOE’s April 23, 2024 interconnection account).
Can a solar battery send power to the grid after sunset?
Yes, if the system, interconnection agreement and applicable grid rules permit it. The battery can store energy generated during the day and export it later. Whether that operation is allowed, useful or compensated depends on local rules, the project’s controls and the value of power at the time of export. A battery may instead serve on-site demand or provide another service.

Does co-locating solar and storage save money?
It can reduce duplicated project infrastructure, but savings are not assured. The DOE identifies potential savings through shared hardware and lower site-preparation, land-acquisition, installation-labor, permitting, interconnection and developer-overhead costs (DOE’s Solar-Plus-Storage 101).
That DOE page also gives a historical modeled comparison: co-located DC-coupled costs were 8% lower, and co-located AC-coupled costs 7% lower, than the separately sited comparison in that example. These figures describe that analysis, not current market prices or expected savings for a particular project. Actual economics depend on site and equipment costs, charging source and cost, curtailment, grid services, market rules and how the system is operated.

Co-location is not always the best siting choice. In its discussion of community solar, NLR notes that storage may be more economical at strategic grid points (NLR’s community solar report). The relevant comparison is project-specific: shared site benefits must be weighed against the value and cost of placing storage elsewhere.

The coupling choice determines the electrical path between solar panels, battery and grid, and affects which equipment is needed. The two configurations are not interchangeable in every design, and neither is a universal winner.

| Configuration | What the distinction means | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| AC-coupled | Solar and battery connect on the AC side through their respective conversion equipment. | Compare the required equipment, conversion path and project design. DOE’s historical modeled example reported costs 7% below its separately sited comparison; this is not a current quote or general savings rate. |
| DC-coupled | Solar and battery connect on the DC side, with a different conversion path and equipment arrangement. | Consider solar clipping and energy flows in the proposed design. NLR discusses modeled configurations that can eliminate PV clipping events. DOE’s historical modeled example reported costs 8% below its separately sited comparison, not a general savings rate. |
Those percentages come from the same older DOE example and should not be used to select a design without project-specific engineering and cost analysis.
How to compare a solar-plus-battery project
Start with the service the battery is intended to provide. A system designed to increase on-site solar use may need a different dispatch strategy from one designed for peak shifting, grid exports, smoothing or backup.
- Separate power from energy: Power capacity, measured in kW or MW, describes how quickly the battery can charge or discharge. Energy capacity, measured in kWh or MWh, describes how much it can store. Together, these indicate possible duration; neither number alone establishes how well the battery meets a particular need.
- Check the solar profile: Assess when solar generation is available and whether clipping or curtailment is actually expected at the site.
- Check grid permissions and limits: Confirm interconnection and export rules, including whether storage is recognized in the process and whether charging from the grid is allowed.
- Compare siting and shared costs: Account for shared land, equipment and project-development resources, but also evaluate whether storage at another grid location would deliver more value.
- Identify how the service is valued: The economics depend on market rules, grid services, charging costs and the value of shifting or exporting energy. There is no universal ranking of configurations or siting choices.
What project examples do—and do not—show
The DOE identifies the AES Lawai Solar Project in Kauai, Hawaii, as paired with a 100 MWh battery energy storage system. That capacity is a project description, not evidence by itself of performance, savings or suitability for another site (DOE’s solar and storage overview).
