Start with a secure screen lock, then check your phone’s security status, lost-device recovery, privacy permissions, backup, and app protection. The exact menus vary by Android version and manufacturer, so use the Settings search box for a feature name if the path below does not match your phone.
Why Android settings may look different
Android does not use one identical Settings menu on every phone. Google says options can vary by device and version: Android 13 and newer generally group controls under Security and privacy, while Android 12 and older may show Security and Privacy separately. Search Settings for the feature name when you cannot find a listed control, and consult your phone maker’s help if it is unavailable. Google’s Android security and privacy overview explains the grouping.
1. Set a secure screen lock
Choose a PIN, pattern, or password, then add supported biometrics if you want the convenience of fingerprint or face unlock. Biometrics work alongside the screen lock, which remains important for device protection and some recovery and backup features. Google’s backup guidance recommends a PIN, pattern, or password rather than swipe or Smart Lock for backup protection. Google’s Android backup instructions describe this requirement.
2. Review the Security and privacy overview
Open Settings > Security and privacy, or search Settings for “Security and privacy.” Review the status, alerts, and recommendations shown there; use them to check device lock, updates, privacy controls, Play Protect, and device-finder settings. Resolve any alerts you recognize rather than treating the overview as a substitute for checking the individual controls. The page may use status labels such as “Looks good” or indicate that the device is at risk. Google’s overview page notes that menu layout varies.

3. Confirm Find Hub can help if the phone goes missing
Search Settings for “Find Hub” or “Find My Device” and make sure the service is on. Then check that your phone appears in Find Hub while signed in to the Google Account used on the device. Find Hub can help locate, secure, or erase a lost Android phone, but remote actions depend on prerequisites: the phone needs power and Wi-Fi or mobile data, must be signed in to a Google Account, have Find Hub enabled, and be visible on Google Play. A screen lock is also relevant to participation in the Find Hub network. These conditions do not guarantee recovery or mean every powered-off phone can be found. Google’s Find Hub help page lists the requirements.
4. Check which apps used sensitive permissions
Open Settings > Privacy > Privacy dashboard, or search Settings for “Privacy dashboard.” Review recent access to location, camera, microphone, and other permissions, then change an app’s access if it does not fit what the app does. The dashboard’s history window differs by Android version: Google states it shows seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions explain how to inspect permission access.

5. Turn on backup and verify what is covered
Search Settings for “Backup,” open the backup details for your Google Account, and confirm backup is enabled. Use Back up now if you want to start a backup immediately. Google says backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS; some data requires a specific Google app. Not every app backs up or restores all of its data or settings, and restoring between different Android versions can have limits. Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours to complete fully. Photos and videos may be handled separately through Google Photos. Google’s backup guide covers what may be included and restoration limits.
6. Verify the phone-to-phone transfer
After setup, check the files and app data you cannot afford to lose instead of assuming the transfer copied everything. Google’s setup guidance says downloads such as PDFs, media in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, some app data, non-Google accounts and their data, and some settings may not transfer. Open important apps and confirm their contents, and separately locate essential downloads or hidden-folder media. Google says a transfer may take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the data and process. Google’s Android setup and transfer guide lists possible omissions.

7. Keep Google Play Protect available
In the Play Store, open your profile menu and look for Play Protect to review its status and any warnings. Play Protect checks apps and devices for harmful behavior, including apps from outside Google Play; it can warn about, deactivate, or remove harmful apps. Do not dismiss a warning without understanding which app it concerns. Google Play Protect help describes its checks and responses.
8. Consider Advanced Protection only if its trade-offs suit you
Advanced Protection is an optional collection of stronger safeguards, not a setting every phone owner needs to enable. Depending on device and Android version, its features can include Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Inactivity Reboot, and USB Protection. Setup requires a screen lock; some features depend on device support and may require a reboot. Protections can also change how some browser or USB functions work, so review the feature list and requirements for your phone before enabling it. Search Settings for “Advanced Protection” or use the relevant Google help instructions if it is not shown. Google’s Advanced Protection help page describes supported features and setup.

Hiding content can protect private details from someone glancing at a locked screen, though it also means you may need to unlock the phone to read a notification.
