The Aether is a sky-dimension mod for Minecraft maintained by The Aether Team. It adds floating islands, new ores, mythical creatures, and dangerous dungeons, and its project documentation describes it as multiplayer-compatible. To install it safely, match the Aether file to the exact Minecraft version and mod loader it was built for, then test it in a new profile and world before using an established save.

What the Aether mod adds

The Aether is a separate dimension reached through a Glowstone portal activated with water. Once inside, progression centers on exploring floating islands, finding the dimension’s resources and ores, dealing with hostile creatures, and preparing for dungeon encounters. The official README calls it the original Aether mod and states that it is maintained for modern Minecraft versions and fully compatible with multiplayer.

Think of the Aether as an additional survival progression rather than a cosmetic change to the Overworld. You should arrive with enough ordinary supplies to survive the first trip, then use Aether resources to continue exploring. Because the project has files for several Minecraft versions and loaders, the installation details depend on the specific file you select.

Which Minecraft versions and loaders are supported?

Compatibility belongs to each downloadable file, not to the mod name in the abstract. Before installing, read the file’s Minecraft-version and loader labels. A jar built for Fabric will not work in a Forge or NeoForge profile, even when the Minecraft version number is identical.

Recent 1.21.1 files

CurseForge metadata lists a 1.21.1 Fabric release, version 1.5.11, dated October 3, 2025, and a 1.21.1 NeoForge release, version 1.5.10, dated September 28, 2025. The same project page also lists older 1.20.x and 1.19.x files. These dates identify the files shown in that snapshot; they are not a promise that no newer build exists, so check the current project file list when you install.

Stable versions documented by the project

The official README identifies stable release builds for Minecraft 1.19.2, 1.19.4, 1.20.1, 1.20.2, and 1.20.4 on Modrinth and CurseForge. It separately warns that bleeding-edge CircleCI builds are unfinished and may contain serious issues. A development build can be useful for testing, but it should not be treated as the normal release choice for a valuable world.

1.21.1 NeoForge Aether 1.5.10, September 28, 2025 CurseForge metadata Use a 1.21.1 NeoForge profile; do not place this jar in Fabric or Forge.

Bleeding-edge CircleCI builds Development builds Official README says they are unfinished and may contain serious issues Avoid for a long-running survival world; use a backup and a test profile if you experiment.

A CurseForge FAQ dated January 18, 2026 describes the original mod as working up to Minecraft 1.21.1 “as of writing.” That is a dated statement, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. Recheck the verified project page and its file labels immediately before downloading.

Before installing: protect your worlds and choose a stack

Back up anything you care about

Copy important world saves before changing the mod set or Minecraft version. A mod can change world data, and a failed launch or incompatible update can leave a save difficult to open in the previous setup. Keep the backup outside the active instance so a launcher cleanup cannot remove both copies.

Create a separate profile

Make a fresh profile for the target Minecraft version and loader. A separate profile keeps Aether files and configuration away from an existing installation and makes it easy to remove the mod if a test fails. Launch the empty profile once before adding the jar; this confirms that the loader itself works.

Decide on Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge

Select one loader based on the Aether file you intend to use. The three-way match must be exact:

  • The Minecraft version in the profile must equal the version listed for the Aether file.
  • The profile’s loader must be the same loader named by the Aether file: Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge.
  • Any additional mods must also support that same Minecraft version and loader.

Do not try to solve a loader mismatch by renaming a jar or placing it in another profile’s folder. The file was compiled for a specific mod-loading environment.

Install with the CurseForge App

The CurseForge FAQ recommends using the verified project page. The labels below describe the normal workflow; the exact wording of buttons can change as the app is updated.

  1. Open the CurseForge App and go to Minecraft.
  2. Choose the option to create a custom profile or instance.
  3. Set the exact Minecraft version you want to run.
  4. Choose the loader required by the Aether file: Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge.
  5. Search for “Aether” in the profile’s mod browser.
  6. Select the verified project maintained by TheAetherTeam, then choose a file whose Minecraft version and loader match the profile.
  7. Install the mod and let the app place it in the profile.
  8. Launch the profile once. Open the in-game Mods screen and confirm that Aether appears.
  9. Create a disposable test world and enter it before opening a long-running save.

If the app offers several Aether files, do not select solely by the highest version number. A newer file for a different Minecraft release or loader is the wrong file for your profile.

Install manually with a loader profile

Manual installation is useful when you manage the game directory yourself or want to control exactly which jar is present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the loader for the exact Minecraft version you plan to use.
  2. Start that loader profile once, then close the game. This creates the profile’s directories.
  3. Download the Aether jar from the verified The Aether project on CurseForge or Modrinth. Confirm both the Minecraft version and loader on the file page.
  4. Open the selected profile’s mods folder. If the folder does not exist, create a folder named mods using the loader’s normal directory structure.
  5. Copy the downloaded Aether .jar into that folder without extracting or renaming it.
  6. Launch the same loader profile and inspect the Mods screen for the Aether entry.
  7. Generate a test world and verify that the game remains stable before opening a backed-up main world.

Keep the jar in the profile you actually launch. Copying it into a different instance, the vanilla game directory, or a profile using another loader will not make it compatible.

Make the Aether portal

The official portal description is simple: build a Glowstone frame and activate it with water. The frame is the gateway; water supplies the activation.

  • Options Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, by heavy armor
  1. Collect enough Glowstone to construct a complete frame in the Overworld.
  2. Place the Glowstone in the portal-frame shape you intend to use, making sure the interior opening is unobstructed.
  3. Use water on the frame to activate it, following the official Aether portal behavior.
  4. Enter the activated portal to travel to the Aether dimension.

The sources do not specify a universal frame size in the project summary, so use the dimensions and placement shown by the current official instructions or in-game guidance rather than relying on an unverified template. If water does not activate the frame, check that every frame block is Glowstone, the opening is clear, and you are using the Aether jar for the world’s exact version and loader.

Prepare for your first trip

Bring Overworld supplies

Gather normal survival supplies before opening the portal. Food, basic tools, building blocks, light sources, and spare equipment reduce the chance that the Aether becomes your only source of essentials after an early death or a difficult return journey.

Start with a test visit

Use the new profile and a temporary world for the first portal trip. Confirm that the dimension loads, that terrain generates correctly, and that returning through the portal works before committing a main save to the setup.

Explore as a separate progression

The Aether’s floating islands create different travel and fall risks from the Overworld. Explore methodically, secure a safe landing area, collect the dimension’s ores and resources, and treat hostile creatures and dungeon entrances as encounters that may require better preparation than ordinary surface exploration.

Do not use unfinished builds casually

The official README’s warning about bleeding-edge CircleCI builds matters most when world data is involved. If you test one, use a disposable profile and a separately backed-up world. Keep stable release files for normal play.

Play the Aether with friends

The Aether Team describes the project as fully compatible with multiplayer. Compatibility still depends on every participant running the same software stack.

Client and server requirements

  • Every client must use the same Minecraft version as the server.
  • Every client and the server must use the same loader family and loader version appropriate to that Minecraft release.
  • Every client and the server must use the same Aether build.
  • Any other gameplay mods required by the server must also be installed consistently for all players.

Joining checklist

  1. Choose one exact Aether file and record its Minecraft version, loader, and build number.
  2. Install that same combination on the server and on each player’s client.
  3. Start the server and let it generate or load the world.
  4. Have one player join before inviting everyone else; this isolates a basic connection or version problem.
  5. If a player cannot connect, compare the three identifiers first: Minecraft version, loader, and Aether build.

A server can be multiplayer-compatible in principle while still rejecting a client with a mismatched jar. Treat the file versions as part of the server’s required configuration, not as optional recommendations.

Troubleshoot launch and world problems

Symptom First checks Next action
The game fails before reaching the title screen Compare Minecraft version, loader, and Aether file; check whether another mod targets a different stack. Remove unrelated mods, launch the Aether profile alone, and read the crash report for the named incompatible component.
Aether does not appear in the Mods screen Confirm the jar is in the active profile’s mods folder and that the profile uses the loader named by the file. Download the verified file again if necessary and relaunch the correct profile.
The portal will not activate Check that the frame is Glowstone, the interior is clear, and water is being used for activation. Test the portal in a new world to separate a construction issue from a damaged or incompatible save.
A multiplayer client is rejected Compare Minecraft version, loader, and Aether build between that client and the server. Install the exact server combination on the client, then reconnect.
A world behaves strangely after changing versions Determine whether the world was opened with a different Aether build or an unfinished development build. Close the game and restore the backup rather than repeatedly opening the original save.

There is no single universal crash fix documented for every installation. Version and loader alignment is the first diagnostic step; after that, isolate the Aether profile, remove unrelated mods, and use the crash report to identify the failing component.

Choosing a distribution route

Route Best for Important check
CurseForge App Players who want the app to create a profile and place files automatically Select the verified TheAetherTeam project and match the profile’s version and loader to the file.
CurseForge manual download Players who manage files themselves but prefer the CurseForge file listing Copy the jar to the active profile’s mods folder; do not mix loaders.
Modrinth manual download Players whose existing workflow uses Modrinth Use a stable release for the exact Minecraft version and loader shown on the file.

The project had 79,709,529 total CurseForge downloads in metadata shown with the October 3, 2025 project update. That number indicates broad adoption, but it does not remove the need to verify a particular file’s compatibility.

A safe installation checklist

  • Back up important worlds.
  • Create a clean profile for the target Minecraft version.
  • Choose Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge before downloading the mod.
  • Verify that the Aether file names the same Minecraft version and loader.
  • Prefer a stable release over an unfinished bleeding-edge build.
  • Install through the CurseForge App or place the jar in the correct manual mods folder.
  • Launch once and confirm the Aether entry in the Mods screen.
  • Test the portal and dimension in a temporary world.
  • For multiplayer, duplicate the exact version-loader-build combination on the server and every client.

Bottom line

The Aether is straightforward to install when you treat compatibility as file-specific. Pick a stable build for your Minecraft version, use the matching Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge profile, test it in a backed-up world, and build a Glowstone frame activated with water. For multiplayer, make the server and every client identical at the Minecraft-version, loader, and Aether-build levels.
