A useful GPU stress test should answer a specific question: does the card produce errors, overheat, crash under a heavy power load, or remain stable in a workload resembling a game? No single utility answers all four.
For most Windows users, OCCT is the best first download because it detects rendering errors, tests VRAM, monitors WHEA errors, and can test CPU and GPU power delivery together. FurMark is better for a deliberately extreme thermal and power test, while Unigine Superposition is more representative of sustained 3D rendering. The remaining tools are useful for older hardware, NVIDIA development work, or quick diagnostic cross-checks.
Before running any test, return the GPU to stock settings, close games and background renderers, make sure the fans and heatsink are not clogged, and watch temperatures. Stop immediately if you see an abnormal smell, rapidly rising temperature, severe graphical corruption, or repeated power cycling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A stress test is a controlled workload, not a certificate that a graphics card will work in every game. Different tests exercise different parts of the card:
#1 Best Overall
- High Efficiency: The computer graphics card tester can quickly detect faults such as no display, blurry display, and unstable display without the need for individual measurements of the PCI bus interface between the graphics card and motherboard using a multimeter. It can accurately identify issues like short circuits and CPU failures with rate, making it an essential tool for graphics card repairs.
- Versatile Testing Capabilities: The graphics card tester diagnostic tool is specifically designed to test the data bus connections between the graphics card CPU and the computer motherboard's PCI interface for open circuits and short circuits.
- Comprehensive Fault Diagnosis: When troubleshooting computer graphics card issues, the graphics card diagnostic analyzer tester allows technicians to inspect for burn marks, broken PCB traces, and abnormal voltages before conducting further tests. This comprehensive approach helps in identifying underlying problems accurately and efficiently.
- User Friendly Operating: The display video graphics card tester is designed for ease of use, with a simple setup process involving inserting the faulty card into the corresponding slot, applying a 12V power supply, and pressing the push buttons switch. The indicator lights on the tester provide clear feedback on the status of the graphics card, allowing for quick and accurate fault diagnosis.
- Accurate Fault Localization: The graphics card tester with Light's indicator lights offer quick feedback on the condition of the graphics card, helping technicians pinpoint issues with the main CPU chip such as open circuits or short circuits. In case of any anomalies in the indicator lights, further confirmation using a multimeter can be done to accurately locate the fault points, ensuring thorough troubleshooting and repair.
| Test type | What it is useful for | Typical failure signs |
|---|---|---|
| 3D rendering | Core stability, driver behavior, visible artifacts | Colored blocks, flashing polygons, driver reset, application crash |
| VRAM testing | Detecting errors in video memory | Reported memory errors, corruption, crashes when textures are loaded |
| Thermal stress | Cooling capacity and fan behavior | High temperature, throttling, shutdown |
| Power stress | GPU, CPU, and power-supply behavior together | Black screen, reboot, protection shutdown |
| Game-style benchmark | Stability under a repeatable graphics workload | Benchmark crash, flicker, artifacts, inconsistent results |
Run a short test first—around 10 to 15 minutes—to catch obvious problems. If that passes, use a longer run when validating an overclock, undervolt, repaired system, or newly installed graphics card. Record the GPU temperature, hotspot temperature if available, clock speed, fan speed, power draw, and the exact driver version.
1. OCCT — best overall diagnostic tool
OCCT is the strongest all-round choice for troubleshooting. It is portable: download it, extract or run the executable, and start testing without an installer or external dependencies. The free Personal edition is usable and includes meaningful tests; paid editions add further capabilities.
Why use it
- 3D Standard applies a high DirectX GPU load and includes automatic rendering-error detection.
- 3D Adaptive lets you specify GPU load, varies the load across the voltage/frequency curve, and can create transient load spikes.
- VRAM reports detected video-memory errors.
- Power loads the CPU and GPU simultaneously to maximize system power consumption.
- Combined provides another way to exercise multiple components together.
OCCT also reports WHEA errors and can test several GPUs in parallel, including GPUs without a display attached. It can either stop at the first error or continue and report later errors, depending on the selected behavior.

How to run a useful test
- Open OCCT and select 3D Standard for a first graphics-stability check.
- Choose the GPU if the system has more than one, set a 10–15 minute duration, and leave the workload at its default initially.
- Start the test and watch the error counter, temperature, clocks, and WHEA count.
- Repeat with VRAM if you suspect memory instability.
- Use Power only after the individual tests pass. It places a much greater demand on the complete system.
The default maximum test duration is one hour. Unlimited runs require a Patreon membership or Steam purchase. A clean result means that OCCT found no error during that particular run; it does not prove that every possible memory address was tested. Under Windows, OCCT cannot test VRAM reserved by the operating system or other programs, so a defective cell can escape detection.
If Power causes an abrupt black screen, do not immediately conclude that the GPU is defective. OCCT specifically identifies an undersized or protection-triggering PSU as one possible cause. Check the PSU capacity, PCIe power cables, connectors, and GPU power limit before repeating the test.
2. FurMark — best for an extreme thermal and power check
FurMark is intentionally harsh. Its workload can drive substantially more GPU power than ordinary games and applications, which makes it useful for finding cooling or power-delivery problems quickly.
That intensity is also its limitation. NVIDIA describes FurMark as a workload beyond real-world game behavior. A card may reduce its clock speed because over-temperature or over-current protection activates. Throttling during FurMark is therefore not automatically a failure.

- [Easy to Operate] The display video graphics card tester provides a simple setup process - insert the faulty card, apply 12v power, and press the switch, with indicator lights for clear status feedback, enabling quick and precise fault diagnosis.
How to use it safely
- Launch FurMark and select the desired resolution. Start with the monitor’s native resolution rather than immediately choosing an extreme preset.
- Run a short 5–10 minute test while monitoring temperature and clock speed.
- Stop if the temperature approaches the card manufacturer’s limit, the system becomes unstable, or the display shows serious corruption.
- For a longer validation run, use a defined duration rather than leaving the test unattended.
Do not disable temperature or current protections. NVIDIA warns that disabling those mechanisms can permanently damage the graphics card and may void its warranty. FurMark is excellent for checking whether a cooler, case airflow setup, or PSU behaves under an extreme load; it is not proof that the GPU is stable in every game.
3. Unigine Superposition — best game-style stress test
Unigine Superposition renders a demanding 3D scene and is a better fit than FurMark when you want a repeatable workload that feels closer to sustained game rendering. It offers Benchmark, Game, and Virtual Reality modes.
For a dedicated loop, open the Benchmark tab, select STRESS, set the Duration, choose the Graphics API, select fullscreen and resolution, choose Textures quality, and click RUN. The documented API choices in the stress-test interface are DirectX and OpenGL.
The dedicated STRESS item is limited to the Advanced and Pro editions. If it is missing from a basic edition, that is an edition restriction rather than necessarily a broken installation. After a successful run, the Results tab shows the total duration, GPU characteristics, and a pass mark.
Superposition is particularly useful for comparing before-and-after changes: run the same resolution, quality, API, and duration after changing a driver, cooler, fan curve, or overclock. A crash, frozen scene, driver reset, or visible artifact is a failed stability result even if the final benchmark score looks normal.
4. Unigine Heaven — best lightweight and legacy compatibility check
Unigine Heaven Benchmark 4.0 remains handy because it is relatively light, easy to loop, and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The Windows download is listed at 247 MB.
Heaven is old software—the official version dates to 2013—and should not be presented as a modern DirectX 12 or Vulkan test. Its listed graphics APIs are DirectX 9, DirectX 11, and OpenGL 4.0. That age is useful when diagnosing older cards or checking whether a basic DirectX 11 workload is stable, but it also means it may not expose problems that appear only in newer engines.

Suggested procedure
- Open Heaven and choose DirectX 11 for a normal Windows graphics check.
- Set the resolution, quality, and fullscreen mode you want to compare between runs.
- Use the benchmark to establish a baseline, then enable looping or extended testing where your edition provides it.
- Watch for flickering textures, geometric spikes, colored flashes, crashes, and driver resets.
The official feature list includes GPU temperature and clock monitoring. Extended editions add benchmark looping, command-line automation, and CSV reports. Heaven is best used as a quick second opinion, not as the only test for a current high-end GPU.
5. MSI Kombustor — convenient companion to MSI Afterburner
MSI Kombustor is a convenient Windows stress-test utility for users who already use MSI Afterburner for monitoring or tuning. It provides demanding GPU workloads and makes it easy to observe temperature, clock behavior, fan response, and artifacts while a test is running.
Use it as a cross-check rather than assuming that one preset represents every workload. A practical sequence is:
- Reset Afterburner to stock settings by clicking the reset control before testing.
- Start Kombustor at a moderate resolution and run for 10 minutes.
- Check whether the GPU reaches a stable temperature or continues climbing.
- Repeat after an overclock or undervolt change, altering only one setting at a time.
As with FurMark, a very low clock under a heavy burn-in workload may indicate thermal or power throttling rather than a failed card. Kombustor should not be used to justify disabling protection limits. For memory-specific diagnosis, OCCT’s VRAM test is usually more informative.
6. NVIDIA GPU Stress Test — best for developers and CUDA validation
NVIDIA GPU Stress Test (GST) is not a typical consumer GUI benchmark. It is a CUDA-based project intended for users who are comfortable building and running software from source.
On Windows, the project lists CUDA 12.x, Visual Studio 2022, vcpkg, and pthread among its prerequisites. In Visual Studio, the CUDA integration is enabled through Project → Build Dependencies → Build Customizations. The README says to check Cuda 12.6; if it is absent, add the integration from:
$(CUDA_PTH)extrasvisual_studio_integrationMSBuildExtensions
The documented command-line option is:
gst.exe -T=n
n is the loop count and defaults to 10. Each test can run for up to 600 seconds before hang detection aborts it. An invocation runs a series of five tests and reports PASS or FAIL for each.

There are two important limitations. GST selects the first visible GPU by default, so it does not automatically test every graphics card installed in a multi-GPU system. Also, the Windows runtime requires gst.exe together with pthreadVC3.dll. Choose GST when you need CUDA-focused validation or are already working in a CUDA development environment; choose OCCT or Superposition for a normal desktop diagnosis.
How to interpret a crash, artifact, or black screen
Artifacts or reported errors
Stop the test and return the card to stock settings. Remove any GPU overclock, undervolt, custom memory timing, or aggressive power-limit change. If the problem disappears, the tuning was unstable. If it remains at stock settings, try a clean graphics-driver installation, check power connectors, and test the card in another system if possible.
Driver reset or screen flicker
Windows uses WDDM’s Timeout Detection and Recovery system (TDR). The documented default timeout is two seconds: if a GPU operation cannot complete or be preempted in that period, Windows resets the graphics stack. A successful recovery can cause a screen flicker and the message Display driver stopped responding and has recovered; the event is also recorded in Event Viewer.
A TDR is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can result from a driver failure, unstable tuning, excessive workload duration, power instability, or failing hardware. Check Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System and look around the test time for display-driver or hardware-error events. Repeated hangs are more concerning: Microsoft documents a system bug check after five GPU hangs and recoveries within one minute, with the sixth or later hang triggering the crash.
Black screen or reboot
Check the PSU and cabling first, especially after an OCCT Power test. Confirm that each required PCIe power connector is fully seated and, where appropriate, use separate PSU cables rather than one daisy-chained lead. A black screen during a synthetic load can also involve a driver reset, overheating, unstable tuning, or a motherboard/PCIe problem. It does not by itself prove that the GPU is dead.
A sensible testing order
- Baseline: reset tuning, update or reinstall the driver if needed, and record idle temperatures.
- OCCT 3D Standard: run 10–15 minutes and check the error counter and WHEA reports.
- OCCT VRAM: use it when crashes or artifacts suggest memory trouble.
- Superposition: run a repeatable game-style loop using fixed settings.
- FurMark or Kombustor: use a short, supervised run to investigate cooling and maximum power behavior.
- Long validation: if all results are clean, test the actual games or workloads that previously failed.
Testing the software you actually use is the final step. A GPU that passes FurMark can still fail in a particular DirectX 12 game, VR title, CUDA application, or ray-tracing workload because those programs exercise different code paths and memory patterns.

FAQ
Which GPU stress test should I use first on Windows?
Start with OCCT’s 3D Standard test. It includes automatic error detection and can also report WHEA errors. Add OCCT’s VRAM test if you suspect memory problems, then use Superposition or a real game for a second workload.

How long should I stress test a GPU?
Use 10–15 minutes as an initial fault check. For an overclock, undervolt, repair, or new build, run a longer supervised test and then validate with the games or applications you actually use. A single pass is not proof of universal stability.
Is FurMark safe for a graphics card?
It can be used safely when supervised with stock protection settings, but it creates an unusually extreme thermal and power load. Do not disable temperature or current protections, and stop the test if temperatures or system behavior become abnormal.
Why did my computer show a black screen during a GPU test?
Possible causes include PSU protection, an unstable overclock or undervolt, overheating, a driver reset, or hardware failure. OCCT identifies PSU protection as one possible result of its Power test, so a black screen does not automatically mean the GPU is defective.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDoes OCCT test all of my VRAM?
Not necessarily. OCCT states that its Windows VRAM test cannot inspect memory reserved by Windows or other programs, so a defective cell in that reserved area may escape detection.
Is Unigine Heaven still useful?
Yes, as a lightweight and legacy compatibility check. It supports DirectX 9, DirectX 11, and OpenGL 4.0, but it dates from 2013 and is not a modern DirectX 12 or Vulkan stress test.
The Bottom Line
Use OCCT first when you need diagnosis rather than just a score. Its 3D, VRAM, power, and error-reporting tests cover more failure modes than a single benchmark. Use Superposition for a repeatable game-style workload, FurMark or Kombustor for supervised thermal and power checks, Heaven for older hardware and quick compatibility testing, and NVIDIA GST only when CUDA-focused validation justifies its developer-oriented setup.
