Short answer: NordVPN is the leading all-round pick in both Macworld’s and TechRadar’s 2026 Mac VPN lists, but it is not the right choice for every Mac user. Proton VPN is the strongest free, privacy-oriented option; ExpressVPN emphasizes a simple Mac experience and dependable streaming in Macworld’s tests; Mullvad offers unusually capable privacy controls; and Windscribe is a flexible budget alternative. Your best choice depends on whether you value streaming, a free plan, split tunneling, privacy evidence, or the simplest app.
A VPN encrypts traffic between your Mac and the VPN provider. It can reduce exposure on untrusted networks and hide your public IP address from websites, but it does not make you anonymous or protect against every threat. App behavior can change with macOS, the app version, and whether you install from the Mac App Store or the provider’s website.
How these five Mac VPNs were selected
The recommendations below reflect the publications that evaluated them. Macworld says it tested 12 leading services on a MacBook Pro, measuring real-world speed, streaming performance, kill-switch reliability, split tunneling, and Apple Silicon optimization. Its 2026 guide is available at Macworld’s Best VPN for Mac 2026. TechRadar describes hours of expert-led testing in its Mac VPN guide. RTINGS, whose page was updated October 7, 2026, weighs policy clarity, security safeguards, pricing, practical features, user feedback, platform limitations, and reputation in its Mac VPN recommendations.
Recommended Free Tools
Those lists do not produce one universal winner. Macworld and TechRadar put NordVPN at the top overall, while RTINGS separates recommendations by use case. The table is therefore a decision aid, not a claim that one service is objectively fastest or safest for every Mac.

1. NordVPN: the strongest all-round recommendation
NordVPN is the overall choice named by both Macworld and TechRadar. Macworld’s MacBook Pro testing reports strong speed and streaming results, while TechRadar places it first after hours of expert-led testing. Those are attributed rankings, not a guarantee that every Mac, network, or country will see the same result.
Why it suits many Mac users
- It has the broadest agreement among the cited Mac-focused guides.
- Macworld measured real-world speed, streaming, kill-switch reliability, split tunneling, and Apple Silicon optimization rather than relying only on advertised specifications.
- Its streaming result makes it a practical candidate for people who want one app for travel, public Wi-Fi, and entertainment.
Mac limitations to check before subscribing
RTINGS reports that the Mac app lacks split tunneling. Split tunneling normally lets you send selected apps through the VPN while leaving other traffic on the regular connection, so the absence matters if you need a local banking site, printer, game, or corporate app to bypass the tunnel.
RTINGS also says kill-switch behavior differs between the Mac App Store build and the direct-download build. A kill switch is meant to block traffic when the VPN drops; a difference between builds means you should read the current in-app description, test the behavior, and choose the distribution channel that provides the controls you need. Verify current macOS compatibility and app version because those details can change.
Security evidence and the 2026 comparative score
NordVPN’s own August 10, 2026 post says Artifact Security’s comparative test covered NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad, ProtonVPN, and another major provider, examining speed, leak protection, website accessibility, feature reliability, and connection time. The post reports a 91 score and a Platinum rating for NordVPN. This is the provider’s account of that test; the underlying Artifact Security report was not independently reviewed. Treat it as supporting context, not proof of every privacy claim. The provider’s post is at NordVPN’s report on the Artifact Security test.
2. ExpressVPN: the simplest path to a polished Mac experience
Macworld describes ExpressVPN’s Mac app as clean and reports reliable access to major streaming platforms in its testing. That combination makes it a sensible choice for someone who values a straightforward interface over extensive technical tuning.
Where it stands out
- The clean interface can reduce setup mistakes for first-time VPN users.
- Macworld’s streaming observations cover major platforms under its test conditions, giving it a practical entertainment use case.
- Macworld characterizes it as premium-priced, so convenience comes with a potential cost difference.
What the test result does—and does not—mean
Streaming services actively detect and block VPN addresses. A platform that worked during Macworld’s test can fail later, work only in certain countries, or behave differently on another subscription tier. Consider the result evidence of performance at the time and locations tested, not a promise of uninterrupted access.
Current subscription prices, renewal rates, billing currency, simultaneous-device limits, and refund terms are not established by the cited Mac comparison. Check those items on the checkout page before paying, and capture the renewal price shown at signup.

3. Proton VPN: the most useful free option for privacy-minded Mac users
Proton VPN is the clearest free-plan choice in the cited material. Macworld describes an unlimited-data free plan, but RTINGS identifies restrictions that matter more than the word “unlimited.”
Free-plan limits
- Only one active device is permitted.
- The service assigns the fastest available server; free users cannot choose a specific server.
- Official streaming support is reserved for paid subscribers, according to RTINGS.
Unlimited data means the allowance does not run out after a fixed number of gigabytes. It does not provide unlimited device sessions, manual server selection, or guaranteed streaming. If you need a particular country, multiple simultaneous devices, or official streaming support, compare the paid plan rather than assuming the free tier will meet those needs.
Mac kill-switch behavior
RTINGS notes a limitation during server switching on Mac: the kill switch can behave differently while the app transitions between servers. If uninterrupted blocking of traffic during every transition is essential, test the exact current build with a controlled network change before depending on it.
Who should choose it
Choose Proton VPN’s free tier when your priority is encrypted browsing on one Mac, you can accept automatic server selection, and streaming is not the goal. Move to a paid plan only when the missing controls affect your use; do not pay merely because the free plan has a data limit you have not actually reached.

RTINGS highlights Mullvad for WireGuard support, a kill switch, and split tunneling. Those controls appeal to technically minded Mac users who want to decide which applications use the tunnel and which remain on the local connection.
Why advanced users consider it
- WireGuard: a modern VPN protocol that can provide efficient connections when supported by the client and network.
- Kill switch: blocks traffic when the encrypted connection is unavailable, subject to the implementation and current app state.
- Split tunneling: allows application-level routing decisions, useful for local services or apps that do not work well through a VPN.
Limitations reported by RTINGS
RTINGS warns of WebKit limitations, startup exposure risk, no port forwarding, and variable streaming. WebKit limitations can affect how certain browser-based functions work inside the Mac app. Startup exposure risk means you should understand what happens between macOS login, app launch, and tunnel establishment rather than assuming protection begins before the VPN process starts. The lack of port forwarding matters to users who specifically need inbound connections; it is not a problem for ordinary web browsing.
Variable streaming makes Mullvad a less predictable choice if accessing video catalogs is your main objective. For privacy controls and split tunneling, however, it is one of the more technically capable options in this comparison.

5. Windscribe: a flexible budget alternative
RTINGS describes Windscribe as a customizable budget option. It can fit users who want more control over how a lower-cost plan is assembled, provided they check the current Mac requirements and the exact free-versus-paid feature split.
Check the Mac requirements first
The cited RTINGS material flags Mac OS requirements without establishing one universal version number. Before installation, confirm that your macOS release is supported and that the current app is available for your Mac’s processor architecture. Also check whether a feature shown in a general product page is included in the Mac client and in your selected plan.
Budget trade-offs
“Budget” does not mean every feature is included. Compare the current plan’s server access, data allowance, simultaneous connections, protocol controls, and support terms with your actual needs. The available evaluations do not establish one fixed free-tier allowance or server list, so do not rely on an old review or a search-result snippet.
Security, privacy, and speed: how to compare the evidence
A VPN is a privacy tool, not anonymity
The VPN provider can generally see connection metadata that your local network cannot, subject to its policies and technical design. A VPN does not stop phishing, malware, malicious browser extensions, tracking cookies, or an account provider from identifying you after login. Use a password manager, multi-factor authentication, software updates, and tracker controls alongside the VPN.
Separate policy claims from audits
A no-logs statement is a provider policy claim. An independent audit can examine a defined system or process at a point in time, but it is not proof that every future activity is logged or that every privacy risk is eliminated. TechRadar reports 18 independent audits for ExpressVPN in the current text of its guide and names a most recent audit by KPMG published in May 2024; audit counts and dates can change, so verify the live page before treating that number as current.

Macworld’s measurements were made on a MacBook Pro and included real-world speed. Results depend on the tester’s location, ISP, time of day, protocol, server load, and distance to the endpoint. A ranking from one country is not a universal speed leaderboard. If performance matters, test several nearby servers during your normal working hours and compare latency for the applications you actually use.
Streaming: use test results as dated evidence
Macworld’s streaming observations and RTINGS’ category guidance show why streaming should be treated as a test result rather than a permanent feature. Services change their VPN detection, catalog rights differ by country, and a server that works today may be blocked tomorrow. Before subscribing for one platform, check the provider’s current support statement and understand its refund policy. Avoid assuming that a free plan with unlimited data includes official streaming access; RTINGS specifically says Proton VPN reserves that support for paid subscribers.

Mac app details that can change your decision
App Store versus direct download
Distribution channel can affect permissions and features. RTINGS specifically documents different NordVPN kill-switch behavior between the App Store and direct-download builds. Read the release notes and in-app settings for the build you install instead of applying a review of another build.
Apple silicon and Intel Macs
Macworld included Apple Silicon optimization in its test scope. That does not mean every provider has identical performance on every M-series and Intel model. Confirm the current app’s processor support, macOS minimum, and whether translation through Rosetta is required for your Mac.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Split tunneling
Split tunneling is useful when a local printer, corporate resource, game, or banking site must avoid the VPN. NordVPN’s lack of Mac split tunneling, as reported by RTINGS, is therefore a deciding limitation for those workflows. Mullvad is the clearest choice in this group when split tunneling is a priority, subject to its own Mac caveats.
Kill switches
A kill switch can prevent accidental direct connections after a tunnel fails, but implementation details matter during startup, server changes, sleep, and wake. Proton VPN has a documented Mac limitation during server switching, and NordVPN’s behavior differs by installation channel according to RTINGS. Test the failure mode you care about rather than assuming the label tells the whole story.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose in five steps
- Define the primary job. Pick streaming, public-Wi-Fi protection, privacy controls, a free plan, or multi-app routing as your first criterion.
- Check Mac compatibility. Verify your macOS version, Intel or Apple Silicon support, and the current app distribution channel.
- Match required controls. Confirm split tunneling, kill-switch behavior, protocol selection, and server choice in the Mac app—not only on a general feature page.
- Read the plan terms. Record the currency, introductory period, renewal price, data allowance, active-device or connection limit, and refund conditions shown at checkout. Prices and terms are volatile and are not fixed by the cited comparisons.
- Test before committing. Check the sites and apps you use, switch networks, put the Mac to sleep and wake it, and verify that local devices still work. Keep the subscription only if the real workflow meets your requirements.
Setup and verification checklist for any Mac VPN
- Download the current client from the provider’s official Mac page or the Mac App Store, depending on the build you intend to use.
- Sign in, allow the requested macOS network permissions, and select a nearby server for the first connection.
- Open settings and identify the kill switch, protocol, DNS or leak-protection controls, and any split-tunneling menu.
- Visit an IP-check page before and after connecting to confirm that the public IP changes.
- Disconnect Wi-Fi or switch to a phone hotspot while a non-critical webpage is loading; verify the kill switch blocks traffic if that is the behavior you require.
- Test a local printer, file share, video call, and work application. If one fails, use split tunneling where available or temporarily disconnect for that task.
- After a macOS update or VPN app update, repeat the network-drop and sleep/wake checks because permissions and behavior can change.
Common problems and fixes
The VPN connects but a site will not load
Try another nearby server, reconnect, and check whether the site blocks known VPN ranges. If only one service fails, the issue may be regional availability rather than a broken Mac client. Do not assume a different protocol will restore access permanently.
Local devices disappear
Printers, NAS devices, and smart-home interfaces often use local-network discovery that a VPN can isolate. Enable split tunneling if the client supports it, or disconnect for the local task. NordVPN’s lack of Mac split tunneling is material here.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Internet stops after a disconnect
That is often the kill switch working. Reconnect the VPN, inspect the kill-switch setting, and confirm whether your build is from the App Store or direct download. NordVPN’s two Mac builds can behave differently, and Proton VPN has a documented transition limitation during server switching.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Streaming quality is poor
Choose a closer server, reduce other traffic, and compare with the VPN disabled to separate VPN latency from an ISP or platform problem. A successful test by Macworld does not guarantee access or speed for your country, account, or date.
Which Mac VPN should you buy?
- Choose NordVPN if you want the broadest agreement among Macworld and TechRadar and strong Macworld speed and streaming results, and you can live without Mac split tunneling.
- Choose ExpressVPN if a clean interface and Macworld-tested streaming reliability matter more than minimizing subscription cost.
- Choose Proton VPN if you need an unlimited-data free plan for one Mac and accept automatic server selection, one active device, and no official free-tier streaming support.
- Choose Mullvad if WireGuard, split tunneling, and a kill switch are central to your privacy setup and its WebKit, startup, port-forwarding, and streaming limitations are acceptable.
- Choose Windscribe if you want a customizable budget plan and are prepared to verify current macOS support and the precise free-versus-paid limits.
Because prices, app builds, supported operating systems, and streaming blocks change, recheck the provider’s current terms immediately before purchase. The most defensible choice is the one whose Mac-specific limitations you have tested and can accept.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a free VPN enough for a Mac?
It can be sufficient for occasional encrypted browsing on one Mac, but free plans commonly restrict server choice, devices, or streaming. Proton VPN’s free plan has unlimited data, yet RTINGS reports one active device, automatic server assignment, and no official streaming support.
Does a VPN protect every app on macOS?
Usually the VPN routes system traffic, but behavior depends on the client, permissions, and split-tunneling rules. Test local printers, work software, and other apps after connecting.
Can these VPNs guarantee Netflix or other streaming access?
No. Streaming platforms change detection and licensing by region. Macworld’s results are dated observations under its test conditions, not a continuing guarantee.
Should I install the Mac App Store version or the provider’s download?
Use the channel that provides the controls you need, then verify behavior. RTINGS reports that NordVPN’s kill-switch behavior differs between those two Mac builds.
What should I check before a VPN subscription renews?
Review the checkout receipt and account page for the renewal price, currency, billing period, device or connection limits, data rules, and cancellation deadline. These terms can change.
