Several GameCube games still have ideas that newer hardware has not replaced, but a worthwhile return would need to do more than sharpen the image. The best projects would preserve each game’s identity while fixing a specific barrier: rigid controls, missing online services, uneven difficulty, poor accessibility, or limited modern access.
This is a preservation wishlist, not a list of announced projects. “Remaster” here means a careful upgrade to presentation, controls, online infrastructure, and usability; a “remake” may rebuild systems or presentation more substantially. Two picks already have modern access in some form: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door received a Switch remaster in May 2024, while Nintendo’s European catalog lists the original Luigi’s Mansion and F-ZERO GX in Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics for Switch 2, released there on June 5, 2025 for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers. Those versions are useful benchmarks, not evidence that another release has been approved.

What makes a GameCube remaster worthwhile?
A modern edition earns its place when it solves a real problem without sanding away the design that made the original memorable. Better resolution alone is rarely enough. A useful evaluation asks five questions:
- Access now: Is there an official remake, remaster, or subscription-catalog version, and in which region?
- Distinctive core: Which mechanics, art direction, story structure, or multiplayer mode must survive intact?
- Specific defects: Are the obstacles controls, camera behavior, readability, difficulty, matchmaking, audio, or interface friction?
- Right-sized project: Would a conservative remaster work, or does the game need a fuller remake, restored servers, or a sequel-like expansion?
- Feasibility: Is the creative case clear even though current publishing and licensing rights may be unresolved?
The ten games below are therefore not ranked by a claim of universal demand. They are cases where a defined upgrade could make the game easier to play while protecting what made it unusual.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Current access at a glance
| Game | Verified modern access or status | Most important remaining opportunity |

| Star Fox Adventures | No specific current version is established in the supplied evidence. | Reduce companion repetition and add puzzle accessibility without removing the ground-based adventure. |
| TimeSplitters 2 | No current rights or modern release path is verified here. | Restore online play, campaign co-op, and level sharing. |
| Phantasy Star Online: Episodes I & II | The GameCube edition’s original split-screen and online design are historical features; a current service is not verified. | Rebuild matchmaking and online progression around the original class-and-loot loop. |
| Donkey Kong Jungle Beat | A Wii version with standard controls is noted historically; exact current availability is not established. | Support both DK Bongos and standard controls while adding HD presentation. |
| F-ZERO GX | Nintendo’s European Switch 2 catalog lists it in Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics from June 5, 2025, requiring Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. | Add modern display support and online racing without diluting the demanding handling. |
| Kirby Air Ride | No specific modern release is established in the supplied evidence. | Make City Trial viable online while retaining automatic acceleration and timing-focused steering. |
| Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door | Official Switch remaster released in May 2024. | Use its preservation choices as a benchmark; a further edition would need a clearly new purpose. |
| Luigi’s Mansion | A 3DS remake exists, and the European Switch 2 GameCube catalog lists the original from June 5, 2025 with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. | Offer a genuine upgrade beyond reproduction, such as HD presentation and online co-op. |
1. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
Access now
The available catalog evidence does not identify an official modern release. That makes the original difficult to reach legally compared with games that have received ports or subscription versions; availability should be checked by region before purchase.
What must stay
The multi-era structure and sanity effects are the game’s identity. Hallucinated interface behavior, apparent fourth-wall breaks, and the shifting historical settings create tension in ways a conventional horror remake could easily lose.
What needs work
Modern controls should replace the stiff movement and make fixed-camera transitions easier to read. Combat needs clearer targeting, less awkward positioning, and responsive defensive actions. A remaster can also add subtitle options, remappable controls, high-contrast interaction prompts, and a reliable save-management screen without explaining away the psychological tricks.

A conservative remaster is preferable to a complete rewrite. Higher-resolution environments, improved lighting, surround audio, an optional modern control scheme, and carefully preserved sanity effects would address the practical barriers while protecting the original pacing. A full remake would be justified only if it retained the episodic, multi-era structure rather than turning the game into a conventional action title.
2. Viewtiful Joe
Access now
The game appeared on PlayStation 2 after its GameCube debut, but the evidence here does not establish a current modern-platform release. Readers should verify storefront and regional availability rather than assume that an older port remains purchasable.
What must stay
Viewtiful Joe’s cel-shaded presentation and three time powers—slowing, speeding, and manipulating action—are inseparable from its combat puzzles. Enemy reactions, environmental gags, and comic-book staging should remain deliberately stylized instead of being replaced with realistic visuals.
What needs work
The difficulty curve can spike before players have fully learned how powers interact. A remaster should improve tutorialization, offer a gentler first campaign setting, and explain enemy tells without making advanced play automatic. A portable mode with readable menus, suspend-and-resume support, and adjustable text would make the game easier to revisit on a small screen.

Keep the original level layouts and combat systems, then add remappable inputs, widescreen presentation, and a carefully tuned beginner option. New challenge missions would be welcome only if they build on the existing time mechanics rather than replacing the campaign.
3. Star Fox Adventures
Access now
No specific current version is established in the supplied evidence. The game’s development history, including its connection to Dinosaur Planet, is part of its context, but that history is not a reason to erase its Star Fox identity.
Rank #2
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
What must stay
The unusual ground-based Fox adventure, expansive environments, and mixture of exploration, combat, and puzzle solving distinguish it from the series’ space shooters. The world should remain a character, with its species, regions, and storybook tone intact.
What needs work
Tricky’s companion tasks can become repetitive, so a remaster should add more varied commands and reduce backtracking. Harder puzzles need optional hints, stronger visual signposting, and accessibility settings for players who struggle with timing or color-dependent clues. Refreshed voice mixing and environmental audio would help the world feel less flat without rewriting its dialogue.

Right-sized edition
A remaster with selective redesign is enough: preserve maps and story beats, modernize the camera and aiming, streamline repeated errands, and add a hint layer that can be disabled. A remake should not turn the adventure into a different genre.
4. TimeSplitters 2
Access now
Current publishing rights and a reliable modern release route were not verified. That uncertainty should be separated from the creative argument for a return; an ownership question is not proof that a release is legally impossible.
What must stay
The time-spanning campaign, sharply varied eras, frantic shooting, and map editor form the game’s appeal. Levels should continue to feel like compact, replayable scenarios rather than being stretched into a single open world.
What needs work
Modern online multiplayer is the obvious upgrade, but it must include robust matchmaking, private lobbies, latency-aware settings, and protection against disruptive players. Campaign co-op would give the story a new reason to be replayed. The map editor should gain searchable level sharing, moderation tools, and an interface that works with a controller.
Right-sized edition
This is best treated as a feature-rich remaster. Preserve weapons, enemy behavior, and era-specific art direction; add online infrastructure, co-op, accessibility controls, and community sharing. Rights holders would still need to be identified before any feasibility claim could go further.
5. Phantasy Star Online: Episodes I & II
Access now
The GameCube edition is notable for combining local split-screen and online play, but the supplied evidence does not establish a currently supported service or exact present-day hardware requirements.
What must stay
Character classes, randomized loot, hub preparation, and mission loops create a compact action-RPG rhythm. Progression should remain understandable and repeatable rather than becoming a sprawling live-service economy.
Rank #3
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
What needs work
Restored online play should include modern matchmaking, friend invites, cross-region options where technically practical, and clear connection status. New players need readable drop information, inventory filters, quest tracking, and explanations of class roles. Network recovery should protect progress when a host disconnects.
Recommended Free Tools
Right-sized edition
A service-aware remaster can preserve the original balance while adding servers, private rooms, and quality-of-life tools. It should avoid mandatory seasonal content or monetization systems that would undermine the self-contained adventure.
6. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Access now
A Wii version with standard controls is noted in the historical material, but the precise implementation and current availability are not established here.
What must stay
The game’s movement and rhythm are built around unusual physical input. Timing jumps, clapping, rolling, and chaining beats make it unlike a conventional platformer, so the DK Bongos should remain a first-class option rather than being treated as an obsolete gimmick.
What needs work
A modern edition should support original-style bongos for players who want the authentic challenge and standard controls for handheld or accessibility-focused play. Standard controls must be mapped to preserve timing and momentum, not simply replace every action with generic buttons. HD visuals, cleaner effects, and additional worlds could expand the package without slowing its arcade-like pace.
Right-sized edition
Use a remaster-plus approach: preserve the original stages, add control calibration, remappable inputs, practice modes, and optional new worlds. A Wii-style control alternative demonstrates that the concept can survive outside the original accessory, but the bongo scheme should remain central.
7. F-ZERO GX
Access now
Nintendo’s official European catalog lists F-ZERO GX in Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics for Switch 2, with a June 5, 2025 release date and access requiring Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. That is a regional catalog fact, not proof that the same selection or service terms apply everywhere.
What must stay
The speed, severe consequences for mistakes, imaginative tracks, and demanding machine control are the point. Any update that quietly lowers the challenge or adds heavy driving assists would miss why the game remains distinctive.
What needs work
Modern display support should improve readability at high speed, with stable frame pacing, clean widescreen presentation, and options for motion blur and camera shake. Online racing is the major missing feature: ranked and unranked rooms, private matches, spectator tools, and connection recovery would make the competitive design viable today.

Rank #4
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Right-sized edition
A remaster should target modern high-resolution output and 60-frame-per-second presentation as a design goal, not a confirmed technical specification. Preserve handling and track layouts, then add online systems, replay sharing, and training telemetry. The existing Switch 2 catalog version is an access benchmark; a dedicated release would need those substantial additions to justify itself.
8. Kirby Air Ride
Access now
No specific modern release is established in the supplied evidence.
What must stay
Automatic acceleration and the unusual emphasis on steering, timing, drifting, and air control make Kirby Air Ride unlike a standard kart racer. City Trial should remain the centerpiece, with its changing map, machine hunting, random events, and final challenge.
What needs work
Online support could turn City Trial into a durable multiplayer mode, but it needs clear rules for joining late, handling disconnects, and balancing local and remote players. Better tutorials should explain machine statistics and event cues without removing discovery. Accessibility options for camera distance, text size, and control remapping would broaden participation.

A remaster with online City Trial, private rooms, spectator support, and new event presets is enough. The project should not force conventional acceleration or item systems onto a game whose appeal comes from its strange, timing-based control model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Access now
Nintendo released a Switch remaster in May 2024. It is therefore not an unreleased remaster candidate; it is the clearest benchmark for how to update a GameCube classic while respecting its writing and battle mechanics.
What must stay
The chapter-based structure, expressive characters, audience-driven action commands, badge builds, and comedic writing are the foundations. A visual overhaul should support those elements rather than replace them with generic role-playing systems.
What needs work beyond the existing edition
A further edition would need a defined purpose, such as expanded accessibility, additional challenge modes, archival extras, or a substantial new scenario. Simply increasing resolution again would not justify asking owners to buy the same adventure another time.

The 2024 Switch release already demonstrates the conservative-remaster model: preserve the game’s structure and mechanics while modernizing presentation. Any future project should be framed as an expansion or definitive package, not as though the original still lacks a modern version.
Best Value
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
10. Luigi’s Mansion
Access now
A 3DS remake exists, and Nintendo’s European Switch 2 GameCube catalog lists the original Luigi’s Mansion from June 5, 2025 for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers. The catalog reproduction and the 3DS remake are different products, so neither automatically answers the case for another dedicated edition.
What must stay
The haunted-mansion structure, Poltergust-based capture, flashlight timing, room-by-room secrets, and Luigi’s nervous animation are the essential character. The game should remain a focused haunted-house adventure rather than becoming an open-ended action game.
What needs work
A new Switch-class edition could deliver HD lighting, sharper environmental detail, improved camera behavior, and more readable ghost behavior. Full online co-op is the boldest proposal, but it would need encounters redesigned so two players can coordinate without trivializing puzzles or making Luigi’s isolation meaningless.
Right-sized edition
Because modern access already exists through the 3DS remake and the regional Switch 2 catalog, a straightforward port would add little. A worthwhile project would either offer a carefully designed co-op campaign and new mansion content or leave the existing versions as the definitive ways to play.
What reader interest can—and cannot—tell us
A Nintendo Life poll in 2023 asked, “Which GameCube game do you think deserves the 10/10 remake treatment?” It recorded 2,221 votes. The results are a snapshot of that outlet’s readership, not representative market research or a current sales forecast.
| Choice | Share in the 2023 poll |
|---|---|
| F-ZERO GX | 16% |
| Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem | 14% |
| Skies of Arcadia Legends | 13% |
| Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door | 10% |
| Metroid Prime 2: Echoes | 5% |
The poll supports interest in preservation conversations, especially around F-ZERO GX and Eternal Darkness, but it does not establish sales potential, licensing feasibility, or broad player demand. A separate 2023 Nintendo Life discussion also named Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, F-ZERO GX, and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes among Nintendo-published possibilities, with Eternal Darkness, Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader, and Skies of Arcadia Legends among third-party ideas. That shows the conversation predates this list; it does not prove present-day availability.
Which projects should come first?
If a publisher wanted the strongest preservation slate, the projects fall into different levels of ambition:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Remaster now: Viewtiful Joe, Star Fox Adventures, and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat mainly need controls, accessibility, and presentation work.
- Online-focused revival: TimeSplitters 2, Phantasy Star Online: Episodes I & II, F-ZERO GX, and Kirby Air Ride need infrastructure as much as graphics.
- Careful remake or definitive edition: Eternal Darkness and Luigi’s Mansion need enough redesign to solve control or co-op problems without losing atmosphere.
- Benchmark, not an empty slot: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door already has a modern Switch remaster, so future work should add content or accessibility rather than repeat the same upgrade.
The creative cases are independent of business feasibility. Current third-party publishing and remake rights for candidates such as Viewtiful Joe, TimeSplitters 2, and Phantasy Star Online: Episodes I & II were not verified, so no claim that a project is blocked—or easy to approve—can be made from the game’s reputation alone.
A preservation checklist for any announcement
- Keep the original game playable through an optional classic mode where redesign could change timing or balance.
- Offer remappable controls, text-size choices, subtitle options, color and contrast settings, and camera assistance where appropriate.
- Explain whether online play uses restored original rules, new matchmaking, or redesigned content.
- State region, platform, subscription, and accessory requirements precisely; do not treat one country’s catalog as universal.
- Document what changed in graphics, audio, controls, difficulty, saves, and multiplayer so buyers can judge whether the edition is a remaster or a remake.
The Bottom Line
The strongest GameCube remaster ideas are not requests for generic HD graphics. They are targeted fixes: modern controls for Eternal Darkness, online infrastructure for TimeSplitters 2 and F-ZERO GX, accessible challenge in Viewtiful Joe, and genuine co-op design for Luigi’s Mansion. Where a modern version already exists, as with Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the next edition must offer a clearly different benefit.
