Thales has unveiled BeamTracker, a compact passive radar electronic-support-measures (RESM) and electronic-intelligence (ELINT) payload for Class 1 and Class 2 unmanned aerial vehicles and other uncrewed platforms. The company says low-rate initial production has started ahead of its first contracts.
What BeamTracker is
Thales DMS France presented BeamTracker at its Gémenos site in southern France on 9 October 2026. The payload is designed to give smaller UAVs a way to detect radar emissions, estimate where those emissions are coming from and feed that information into early-warning, situational-awareness and intelligence missions.
BeamTracker is a passive sensor. It receives and analyses electromagnetic emissions rather than transmitting a jamming signal. That makes its disclosed role different from an electronic-attack system intended to disrupt or deceive a radar. Thales markets active electromagnetic-attack products separately, but the BeamTracker announcement does not describe an active-jamming function.

How the sensing chain works
BeamTracker uses amplitude-comparison direction finding. In this approach, the receiver compares signal strength across antenna channels to estimate the bearing of an emitting radar. The result is a direction line rather than a complete position by itself; locating an emitter generally requires additional geometry, movement or information from other sensors.
Its processing chains draw on Thales’s Sentinel digital RESM product. The payload therefore combines wideband signal reception with software processing intended to identify and characterize radar activity. Thales has not published a list of supported radar waveforms, emitter libraries, geolocation range or the format of data delivered to a host UAV or ground station.

Which UAVs can carry it?
Thales describes BeamTracker as vehicle-agnostic and intended for Class 1 and Class 2 UAVs, as well as other uncrewed platforms. “Vehicle-agnostic” means the payload is being developed for integration across multiple host vehicles rather than for one named aircraft. No specific UAV model, aircraft manufacturer, airframe modification or connector standard was identified in the debut announcement.

Smaller UAVs have less payload capacity and electrical power than large crewed or uncrewed aircraft, so reducing the burden can make radar surveillance available closer to the tactical edge. The sources do not publish a comparative power figure or demonstrate that every Class 1 or Class 2 aircraft can carry the system; compatibility will depend on the host platform’s payload, power, cooling, antenna placement and mission-computer interfaces.

Maritime and battlefield missions
BeamTracker is intended for two closely related mission sets:
- Early warning: alerting an operator or command system that radar energy is present.
- Situational awareness: showing the direction and activity of emitters around the UAV’s operating area.
- ELINT collection: gathering technical information about emissions for intelligence analysis.
- Maritime surveillance: supporting awareness of radar activity over or near the sea.
- Battlefield sensing: helping forces understand the electromagnetic environment without transmitting a jamming signal.
The announcement does not state how far away BeamTracker can detect a radar, how it performs against low-probability-of-intercept signals or what weather, terrain and antenna-installation constraints apply. Those factors would need to be established through platform trials and operational evaluation.

From CURCO demonstrator to production hardware
BeamTracker builds on CURCO, a compact radar-ESM demonstrator. Janes reported that CURCO was tested in French Navy exercises in 2024 and 2025. Thales’s 2024 Universal Registration Document also records CURCO participation in French Navy and NATO drone exercises. Those activities provide a development lineage, but they do not by themselves establish that BeamTracker has completed an operational acceptance test.
The newer payload uses Sentinel-derived processing and has moved beyond a purely laboratory concept: Thales said low-rate initial production had begun before the first contracts. Low-rate initial production normally represents an early manufacturing phase used to support initial customers and qualification, not full-rate production for a large fleet.

What procurement information is available
As of the 9 October 2026 debut, Thales had not named a customer or announced a contract value, delivery schedule or confirmed operational deployment. Buyers evaluating the payload would therefore need additional information on integration kits, software interfaces, training, sustainment, export approvals, spares and the performance of the complete UAV system rather than the payload alone.
How to assess BeamTracker against other airborne EW sensors
BeamTracker’s published figures are most useful when compared on the same basis with competing sensors. The relevant questions are:
- SWaP burden: compare mass, dimensions and electrical and cooling requirements, not mass alone.
- Spectrum: check frequency coverage and instantaneous bandwidth against the emitters the mission expects to encounter.
- Angular performance: compare field of view and direction-finding error, while checking how each supplier defines accuracy.
- Integration: verify host-platform classes, antenna placement, data interfaces and mission-system compatibility.
- Maturity: distinguish a demonstrator, low-rate initial production and a system with documented operational deployment.
- Mission role: separate passive warning and ELINT sensors from products that also perform active electronic attack.
Bottom line on the debut
BeamTracker is a roughly 5 kg, wideband passive RESM/ELINT payload aimed at bringing radar warning and emitter direction finding to smaller UAVs. Its 1–18 GHz coverage, 3 GHz instantaneous bandwidth, 100° field of view and claimed 3° root-mean-square bearing error are the principal published performance figures. The move into low-rate initial production is significant, but customer selection, delivery timing and operational results remain undisclosed.
