If your Team Fortress 2 server is missing from the server browser, first determine whether it is a LAN server, a reachable Internet server that the browser has not listed, or a server that cannot be reached at all. Set sv_lan 0 for Internet play, test same-router players with the host’s internal IP, clear browser filters, then verify the host firewall, UDP port forwarding and listening port.
The quickest isolation test is a direct connection. If connect server-ip:port works while the browser remains empty, the game server is reachable and the fault is probably filtering or server-browser registration. If direct connection fails, concentrate on server mode, firewall, NAT and forwarding before troubleshooting Steam’s browser.

Start with the three tests that identify the fault
Do these in order rather than changing several settings at once. Record the result of each test; it tells you which layer is failing.
- Check the server console. Run
sv_lan. A value of1restricts the server to LAN clients. For Internet players, runsv_lan 0, then restart the map or server. Put the setting inserver.cfgorlistenserver.cfgso it is applied on every start. - Test from the same router with the private address. On a computer hosting the server, find its IPv4 address (for example,
192.168.1.42). From another device on that Wi-Fi or wired network, open the developer console and runconnect 192.168.1.42:27015. Do not use the household’s public address for this test. - Test from outside the home network. Have a friend on a different connection use
connect public-address:27015, or use another device on cellular data. A direct connection that succeeds proves the game process, NAT path and port are functioning even if the browser listing is delayed or filtered.
Interpret the outcomes as follows:
- Local direct connection works, outside connection fails: check
sv_lan, the host firewall, the router’s UDP rule, carrier-grade NAT and whether the forwarded address still belongs to the host. - Outside direct connection works, browser listing fails: reset filters and investigate Steam browser or master-server communication; do not rebuild the port-forward rule unnecessarily.
- Neither direct connection works: verify that TF2 is listening on the expected port, that the process is running, and that the local firewall allows it.
- The server appears only on the host computer: it is commonly a LAN-mode, firewall or interface-binding problem, not a browser sorting issue.
Set the correct LAN or Internet mode
Steam Support’s LAN-server guidance is explicit: “In order for Internet players to connect to your Server, you must enable your Server to be an Internet Server.” The console command is sv_lan 0. A value of sv_lan 1 is appropriate for a private LAN game but prevents ordinary Internet clients from joining.

For a listen server
- Start a map from TF2’s Create Server or equivalent listen-server menu.
- Open the developer console and enter
sv_lan 0. - Change the map or restart the listen server so the network mode is reinitialized.
- Confirm the setting after the restart with
sv_lan.
A listen server runs inside the player’s game process. Closing the game closes the server, and heavy gameplay or downloads on the host can affect everyone. It is suitable for a short session or a small group, but it is more sensitive to the host computer’s firewall, sleep settings and changing local address.
For a dedicated server
- Open the dedicated server console or configuration file.
- Add
sv_lan 0toserver.cfg. - Restart the server process or load a new map.
- Check that the process is listening on the intended UDP port and that no second instance is using that port.
Steamworks describes dedicated servers as the better fit for persistent games such as Team Fortress 2. A dedicated process can remain online when no administrator is playing, use a stable configuration and be restarted independently of a player’s client.
Why players on the same Wi-Fi cannot use the public address
When the client and server sit behind the same router, Steam’s support guidance says the client should use the server’s internal IP address. Many home routers do not support NAT loopback (also called hairpin NAT), so a request from inside the network to the household’s public address never returns to the local host. Steam also documents that a client and server behind the same router may not connect through the server browser.
Find the internal address
- Windows: open Command Prompt, run
ipconfig, and note the IPv4 address for the active Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter. - Linux: run
ip addrand identify the address on the interface carrying the LAN connection. - macOS: open Network settings for the connected adapter and read its IP address.
Use an address in a private range such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x or 172.16.x.x–172.31.x.x. In TF2’s developer console on the other local machine, enter connect internal-ip:port. For the default port, that is commonly connect 192.168.1.42:27015.
Keep the address from changing
A router can assign a different private address after a reboot, which silently breaks an existing forwarding rule. Create a DHCP reservation for the host in the router, or configure a static address that matches the router’s subnet and does not conflict with its DHCP pool. After changing it, update the forwarding destination and repeat the local direct-connection test.

Reset browser filters before changing network settings
A server can be registered correctly yet hidden by one restrictive browser option. In the TF2 server browser, reset the map, region, latency, player-count, password and “not full” filters. Also check whether the browser is set to show only favorites, friends’ servers, secure servers or a particular game mode.
Use a clean search
- Open the Internet tab rather than LAN or Favorites.
- Clear the map field and select all regions.
- Remove maximum-latency and minimum-player limits.
- Disable “not full” or similar capacity filters while testing.
- Clear a saved password requirement and verify whether the server actually has a password.
- Refresh after waiting for the list to finish loading; do not assume an initially empty list means no servers were returned.
If the server appears after clearing one filter, restore filters one at a time to identify the setting that excluded it. A password-protected server may be hidden by a browser option that excludes passworded games, depending on the client build.
Check the host firewall and listening port
Steam’s documented default gameplay port for a dedicated or listen server is local UDP 27015. A Windows, Linux or third-party firewall must allow the TF2 server process to receive traffic on that port. Allowing the application is generally safer than opening every inbound port, but the rule must apply to the active network profile.
Windows checks
- Open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Advanced settings.
- Inspect Inbound Rules for the TF2 or dedicated-server executable and for UDP port 27015.
- Ensure the rule is enabled and applies to the profile currently shown for the network connection.
- If no rule exists, create an inbound UDP rule for the server’s listening port, or allow the executable when Windows prompts during first launch.
- Run the server again and test from another device; a rule created for the wrong executable path will not help a separately installed dedicated-server binary.
Linux checks
Check the distribution firewall (such as ufw, firewalld or nftables) and allow UDP 27015 on the interface that receives Internet traffic. Confirm that the rule survives a reboot. If the server runs in a container, virtual machine or separate network namespace, the host firewall and the container or guest firewall may both need rules.
Confirm what port the process uses
Do not assume every instance uses 27015. Read the launch command and server log for a -port option or an “established connection to Steam servers” message that identifies the bound port. If another application already occupies 27015, choose an unused port and forward that exact port. Steam’s Source-server guidance suggests trying nearby ports 27016–27019 and 27021–27032 when the default port cannot be used.

Use the same number in all three places: the server launch option, the router’s external and internal forwarding fields, and the client’s connect command. A mismatch such as forwarding 27016 while the process listens on 27015 produces an apparently dead server.
Forward the port on the router
Port forwarding tells the router where unsolicited Internet traffic should go. Without it, Steam’s Source-server documentation warns that the server may not be visible in the client’s server browser.
- Give the host a DHCP reservation or static private address.
- Sign in to the router’s administration page and open Port Forwarding, NAT or Virtual Server.
- Create a rule with a descriptive name such as TF2 server.
- Set the protocol to UDP. If the router requires a range, use the same start and end port for a single port.
- Set the external port to the server’s chosen port (27015 by default) and the internal destination to the host’s private IP and port.
- Save or apply the rule, then restart the router only if its interface requires it.
- Test from a genuinely external network. Testing the public address from the same Wi-Fi can fail even when forwarding is correct because of missing NAT loopback.
Do not forward a broad range “just in case.” Open only the port used by the server, keep the server software updated and remove the rule when the server is no longer needed.
Separate browser discovery from basic reachability
The browser is an additional service layered on top of the game connection. It depends on Steam’s master-server communication, filters and the client’s ability to retrieve and parse results. A direct connection bypasses much of that discovery path.
If direct IP works but the list is empty
- Refresh with all filters cleared and verify that you are on the Internet tab.
- Check whether a local firewall or security product allows the TF2 client to contact Steam’s server-browser services.
- Test the Steam Server Browser independently, as recommended in Source-engine troubleshooting guidance. If another Source game also returns an incomplete or stalled list, the issue is more likely Steam access, a firewall, packet loss or router behavior than TF2’s server configuration.
- Restart Steam and the router, then test again after the list has had time to populate.
Steam’s browser troubleshooting identifies firewall or master-server blocking, incorrect Steam rates, packet loss and router firmware behavior as possible causes of incomplete or stalled results. These problems can coexist with a perfectly reachable TF2 server.

If direct IP fails too
- Run
sv_lan 0and restart the map or process. - Confirm that the host is using the correct private address and port.
- Check the host firewall and router forwarding rule.
- Verify that the server process is running and that the port is not already occupied.
- Test locally from the host with
connect 127.0.0.1:27015or the actual port. A local failure points to the process or configuration rather than the router. - Test from a second device on the same LAN using the private address. If that fails while localhost works, inspect the local firewall and network profile.
Account for carrier-grade NAT and double NAT
Some Internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT. The address shown in the router’s WAN page may differ from the public address shown by an external IP service, and inbound forwarding cannot be completed on a router you do not control. In that situation, local clients may work while every outside connection fails.
Double NAT is a similar problem caused by two routers in series, such as an ISP gateway plus a personal router. Put the gateway in bridge or passthrough mode, forward the port through both devices, or place the second router in access-point mode. Ask the provider whether inbound connections are available; do not assume a port-check result from inside the LAN proves Internet reachability.

Steamworks identifies dedicated servers as the preferred architecture for persistent Team Fortress 2 communities. A managed host can be practical when your home connection uses carrier-grade NAT, your router cannot forward ports, a firewall policy blocks inbound traffic or the server must remain online while nobody is playing. Verify the provider’s current game support, port policy, backups and cancellation terms before committing; those details vary and are not established by the troubleshooting steps here.
Diagnose by the symptom you see
“The server is visible on LAN but not Internet”
Run sv_lan 0, restart the map, forward the actual UDP port to the host’s reserved address and allow that port through the firewall. Then test from cellular data or another household. If the outside test still fails, investigate double NAT or carrier-grade NAT.
“Friends can connect by IP, but nobody can find it in the browser”
Leave networking changes alone. Clear every browser filter, refresh the Internet list, restart Steam and test the Steam Server Browser independently. This symptom indicates that the game path is working and discovery, filtering or master-server access is the remaining issue.

“I cannot join using my own public IP”
Use the host’s private address when both devices share a router. Failure through the public address is expected on routers without NAT loopback and does not prove that Internet players are blocked. Ask an external player to test the public address.

Check Steam client firewall permissions, packet loss, Steam rates and router firmware behavior. Try another Source game’s browser. If multiple games are affected, troubleshoot the Steam client path or router rather than the TF2 server files.
“It worked yesterday, then disappeared”
Compare the host’s current private IP with the router rule, confirm the server process is listening on the same port and check whether a router reboot changed its WAN address or network mode. A DHCP change is a frequent cause of a forwarding rule pointing at the wrong computer.
Operational and security checklist
- Keep
sv_lan 0in the configuration only when Internet access is intended; usesv_lan 1for a LAN-only session. - Reserve the host’s private address.
- Forward one required UDP port, normally 27015, rather than a large range.
- Allow the server executable or exact UDP port through the host firewall.
- Use a password and administrator controls for a private community.
- Do not expose unrelated administration interfaces to the Internet.
- Record the chosen port and public address for external testers, but use the private address for same-router players.
- After router, operating-system or TF2 updates, repeat both a local and an external direct-connection test.
When to stop troubleshooting the browser
Once an external player can join by direct IP, the fundamental server, firewall and forwarding path is proven. Continuing to change router settings can create new failures. Focus instead on browser filters, Steam access, packet loss and master-server registration. Conversely, if no external player can connect directly, a browser refresh will not fix the underlying reachability problem; return to sv_lan, the host firewall, the exact UDP port, forwarding, double NAT and carrier-grade NAT.
