If a Team Fortress 2 LAN server is running but missing from the browser, first check the server’s visibility in the current Create Server screen. Valve’s May 2025 update replaced the old checkbox with four choices—Local, Friends Only, Unlisted and Listed—and makes Unlisted the default. Choose Local for a same-network game. If discovery still fails, connect to the host’s private address with the console command connect <internal-ip>:<port>, then work through network, firewall and client-port checks.
Start with the fix most likely to work
Use this order so you do not spend time changing router settings when the server is simply hidden by its visibility mode:

They should be behind the same home router or wired network. A computer on a guest Wi-Fi network, university network or cellular hotspot may be isolated even when it has internet access.
- Open TF2’s current Create Server flow. Select Local when only nearby clients should join. Do not rely on a console-only
map <mapname>command; after the May 2025 behavior change, that can leave you with a running map that is not a joinable server. - Set LAN mode explicitly if needed. In the host console, run
sv_lan 1. If you changed the value while a map was already loaded, reload the map before testing again. - Refresh the LAN browser. Change the host to the intended map, then refresh the client’s LAN tab. Discovery can lag behind a map change.
- Bypass discovery if the tab is still empty. On the host, run
statusand note the private address and listening port. On the client, runconnect <internal-ip>:<port>. A client behind the same router must use the host’s internal address, not its public internet address. - Check firewalls and restricted networks. Allow Steam and TF2 through the host and client firewalls. Remove VPN or proxy variables temporarily, and consider whether a school, workplace, ISP or other network policy blocks the required traffic.
- Give each LAN computer a different client port. Steam documents a default
clientportof27005; computers on the same LAN may need distinct values between27005and27032.
A wired connection can make testing more predictable, but it cannot correct a wrong TF2 visibility choice or an incorrect sv_lan value.
Why a running server can be invisible
“The server is running” and “the server is listed where I am looking” are separate conditions. The current TF2 interface controls who can discover a game and which networking path it uses. A server started with the default Unlisted setting may be healthy while intentionally absent from a public listing. Likewise, a host and client that are on different network segments cannot discover each other merely because both can browse the web.

There are four common visibility choices:

| Listed | Players who find the game through the applicable listing | Choose only when broader discovery is intended; listing does not repair a blocked firewall or isolated network. |
Valve describes the change this way: “The ‘Use Steam Networking’ checkbox has been replaced with a dropdown, allowing the creation of Local, Friends Only, Unlisted and Listed servers — defaulting to Unlisted.” That single interface change explains many reports that began after the May 2025 update.
Set the server to Local in the current Create Server screen
Do this on the host computer, not just on the joining computer:
- Launch TF2 and open the game’s Create Server flow.
- Find the networking or visibility dropdown. If it shows Unlisted, change it to Local for a same-network session.
- Choose the map and start the server from that screen.
- On the second computer, open the LAN tab and refresh it after the host has finished loading the map.
- If you previously started the map with
map <mapname>, stop that test and create the game through this flow instead. The console command loads a map, but under the new behavior it may not create a joinable game session.
If you want friends to join through Steam rather than through a shared router, select the visibility option that matches that goal. Do not treat Friends Only, Unlisted or Listed as interchangeable with a LAN-only game; they describe different discovery paths.
Force LAN mode with the console
When the host should be LAN-only, set the server variable explicitly:
sv_lan 1After changing it, reload the map if necessary. A documented community fallback is:
sv_lan 1; heartbeat; changelevel <map>Replace <map> with the map name you intend to run. The heartbeat command announces the server again, while changelevel ensures the new mode is applied during a fresh level load. Once the map is up, run:

statusRead the host’s output for its private address and port. Give those values to the client and use:
connect <internal-ip>:<port>For example, the syntax is a private address followed by a colon and the port shown by status; do not copy the angle brackets literally. If the server is meant for the internet instead of a LAN, Steam documents sv_lan 0 for that purpose. Do not switch to that value as a blind fix for a same-router game: it changes the server’s intended mode rather than repairing local discovery.
Use the correct IP address
Steam Support’s rule is explicit: when the client is behind the same router as the server, connect with the server’s internal IP address, not the external or public address. The internal address is the one assigned to the host inside the local network; the public address is the address the router presents to the internet.
Using the public address from inside the same LAN can fail because the router may not support the required loopback behavior. It can also send you into unnecessary port-forwarding troubleshooting. For a same-network test, obtain the host address shown by status and use that value in the connect command.

Direct connection is a fallback, not proof that the browser is configured correctly. If direct IP works while the LAN tab remains empty, the game path is reachable and the remaining problem is usually visibility, discovery refresh or filtering. If direct IP also fails, continue with network and firewall checks.
Check that both computers are really on the same LAN
“Both machines have Wi-Fi” is not enough. Verify the path between them:

- Connect both to the same home router or the same wired switch.
- Do not use a guest SSID or another network that enables wireless-client isolation.
- Disconnect VPNs and proxies for the test; they can place one machine on a different virtual route.
- Confirm that the host is not using one connection while the client is using a separate hotspot or secondary adapter.
- After changing networks, restart TF2 or refresh the LAN browser so stale discovery information is discarded.
Steam’s LAN guidance assumes local clients. If the computers are separated by a university, workplace or other managed network, the administrator may block the traffic even when the addresses appear similar. In that case, a home LAN test is the quickest way to distinguish a TF2 setting from a network-policy restriction.
Firewall, router and restricted-network checks
A recent Steam or game update can cause an existing firewall rule to block connectivity. On both machines, open the operating system’s firewall controls and allow Steam and TF2 on the active private or local network profile. If a prompt appears when the host starts, allow the application rather than dismissing it.
Routers and upstream networks can also block required ports. Steam specifically calls out university networks, proxies, ISPs and other policies as possible causes. For a true LAN game, first test with both computers on an uncomplicated private network; do not begin by forwarding ports from the router to the internet. Port forwarding is relevant only when players must reach a host from outside the LAN, and Steam Networking can provide a relay-based alternative for self-hosting.
Temporarily disabling a firewall can be a diagnostic step only if your operating system and network policy allow it. Re-enable protection immediately after the test and create a narrow allow rule for Steam and TF2 instead of leaving the firewall off.
Resolve client-port conflicts when multiple computers share one router
Steam documents a default clientport of 27005 and states that only one game with that port can be active on the same LAN. If two TF2 clients are competing for the same port, one may fail to appear or connect even though the server settings look correct.
Assign distinct client-port values to the machines, choosing unused values in the documented range from 27005 through 27032. The important requirement is uniqueness on that LAN, not a particular number. After changing a client’s port, restart Steam or TF2 as required by the setting, then repeat the Local-mode and direct-connect test.

Do not confuse clientport with the server’s listening port shown by status. The client setting identifies an outgoing game client; the server port is the destination used in connect. Record both separately when troubleshooting.
Local LAN mode versus Steam Networking visibility
The visibility choice answers “who should discover or join this game?” The transport path answers “how does the traffic reach the host?” Keep those questions separate:

Steam Datagram Relay is an option Valve documents for self-hosting. It changes the route used for a Steam-mediated connection, but it does not make an incorrectly configured Local server appear in the LAN tab. Select the visibility mode that matches the people who need to join, then troubleshoot reachability separately.
Browser discovery versus direct IP

If direct connection succeeds, you have demonstrated that the host is reachable and can focus on discovery settings. If it fails, check the address, port, firewall and network path before changing visibility again.
Wi-Fi or Ethernet for a cleaner test?

Use Ethernet as an isolation test: connect both systems to the same router or switch, recreate the server as Local, refresh the LAN tab and try the private-IP command. If that works, investigate the wireless network’s isolation or roaming configuration rather than TF2 itself.

The server runs, but the LAN tab is completely empty
Verify the Create Server visibility first. Change Unlisted to Local, reload the map and refresh the tab. Then run status and try the host’s private address directly. If direct IP works, the issue is discovery rather than basic connectivity.

sv_lan 1 was entered, but nothing changed
The variable alone does not retroactively repair every session. Reload the map, send a heartbeat, and confirm the server was created through the current flow rather than only with map. Also verify that the client is on the same LAN and is using the internal address.

Check the port from status, firewall rules on both computers and any restricted network. If several computers are running Steam games on that LAN, assign unique clientport values in the 27005–27032 range.
A friend outside the house cannot connect
A Local server is intended for the same LAN. Choose the appropriate Steam Networking visibility for a remote friend and use Steam’s invite or listing path. Steam Datagram Relay may avoid traditional port forwarding, but the selected visibility and firewall rules still determine whether the friend can join.
The host and client are on a campus or work network
Managed networks may block the required ports or isolate clients. Test on a private home network if possible. If that is not possible, ask the network administrator whether peer-to-peer game traffic is restricted; changing TF2’s browser setting cannot override that policy.
What not to change first
- Do not forward ports to the public internet before confirming Local mode, the internal IP and basic firewall access.
- Do not use the public IP for a client that is behind the same router as the host.
- Do not assume a server is joinable merely because a map loaded after
map <mapname>. - Do not leave a firewall disabled after testing; create an application allow rule instead.
- Do not assign the same
clientportto every computer on the LAN. - Do not buy networking hardware as a substitute for correcting visibility or server-mode settings.
A repeatable diagnostic procedure
When you need a clean test, use the following sequence without changing several variables at once:

- Put the host and one client on the same private router, preferably by Ethernet for the first test.
- Start TF2 through Create Server and select Local.
- Load a map, then confirm
sv_lan 1on the host and reload if you changed it. - Refresh the client’s LAN tab.
- If no entry appears, run
statuson the host and use its private address and port in a directconnectcommand. - If direct connection fails, allow Steam and TF2 through both firewalls and remove VPN or proxy variables.
- If more than one computer is running a Steam game on that LAN, assign distinct client-port values between 27005 and 27032.
- Only after the local test works should you choose Friends Only, Unlisted or Listed for a remote or broader audience.
This order separates a visibility problem from a reachability problem. It also preserves the simplest evidence: a successful private-IP connection proves the host, map and local route are working even if the browser listing is not.
