Choose textured PEI when you want a patterned underside, regularly print PETG or flexible filament, and your plate maker lists those materials as compatible. Choose smooth PEI when the underside must be smooth, you print PLA with small contact areas or sharp corners, or your specific smooth sheet is documented for that job. There is no universal adhesion winner: results depend on the exact sheet coating, filament, bed temperature, cleanliness, first-layer calibration and printer.
What the two PEI finishes actually change
PEI (polyetherimide) is the adhesive coating used on many spring-steel build plates. The printer heats the plate so the first layer bonds to the PEI, then the part is removed after cooling. “Textured” and “smooth” describe the surface finish, not a universal material standard. Two plates carrying the same PEI label can have different coatings, thicknesses, magnets, dimensions, cleaning instructions and recommended filament settings.
A textured plate has a deliberate powder-coated or etched pattern. That pattern transfers to the bottom of the part and increases the number of microscopic contact features. A smooth plate presents a continuous flat surface, so the underside is smooth or matte according to the product. Surface appearance is therefore the first practical difference: if the bottom face is visible, select the finish you want before considering small adhesion differences.

Neither finish guarantees identical results from one printer to another. Manufacturers do not provide a controlled, head-to-head statistic showing that one finish produces a specific percentage improvement in adhesion, durability or print success. Treat product-specific tables and your printer’s first-layer setup as the authority.

When textured PEI is the better choice
You want a patterned underside
The texture is intentionally embossed into the first layer. It can hide minor first-layer lines and gives a distinctive finish, but the pattern is not guaranteed to look exactly the same on every sheet. If cosmetic consistency matters across multiple printers, use plates from the same product line and inspect replacement-sheet guidance.
You print PETG or flexible materials
On Prusa’s textured sheet, PETG, CPE and TPEE/TPU are listed for extensive use. Prusa says the sheet is powder-coated with Ultem PEI, both sides are usable and it is thinner than its smooth counterpart. The manufacturer also says TPU/TPEE needs no glue on that sheet. Bambu’s dual-texture table likewise lists PETG/PETG-CF with no glue on its textured side. Those statements apply to the cited plates, not to every textured PEI product.
You want cooling to assist release
Prusa’s official guidance states: “Prints automatically detach after the sheet cools down.” Let the plate return toward room temperature before trying to lift a part. A textured coating is not scratch-proof, so do not force a warm print with a knife or pry tool simply because it feels stuck.
Where textured PEI can be less convenient
Small PLA footprints and narrow corners may not touch enough of the peaks and valleys to stay down. Prusa specifically notes that small PLA prints may need a brim. A brim increases the first-layer perimeter and can be a better fix than changing plates. Texture also makes the bottom unsuitable when you need a perfectly smooth mating face.
When smooth PEI is the better choice
You need a smooth or matte underside
A smooth surface transfers a continuous finish instead of a visible pattern. Bambu describes the smooth side of its dual-texture plate as smooth and matte; the exact sheen varies with the coating and print settings. Use a smooth plate for labels, display faces, gaskets or parts that must sit flat against another component.

You print PLA with small contact areas
Prusa calls its smooth PEI sheet ideal for PLA and says sharp corners or small first-layer areas are less likely to detach. This is a product-specific statement, not proof that all smooth sheets outperform all textured sheets. A correctly calibrated first layer and a grease-free surface remain essential.
You can control separation for stronger materials
Clean smooth PEI can bond to PETG so strongly that removing the part peels the PEI surface and irreversibly damages the sheet, according to Prusa’s general surface-preparation guidance. Prusa recommends another sheet type or a thin PVA glue layer as a separation layer. Its smooth-sheet instructions also say PETG, ASA, ABS and PC Blend may need a protective layer. Never assume that “no glue” is safer: on a material that over-bonds, the protective layer prevents damage.
Where smooth PEI can be less convenient
TPU can adhere too strongly to smooth PEI, and a large PETG part can be difficult to release. A smooth coating can also become less effective as it wears; Prusa treats the sheet as a consumable and does not promise a service life. If you routinely print flexible or high-adhesion materials, a documented textured option may reduce release problems.
Material-by-material guidance
PLA, PLA-CF and PLA-GF
For Prusa’s range, smooth PEI is the stated ideal for PLA, particularly where corners or contact patches are small. On Prusa’s textured sheet, add a brim when a small model lifts. Bambu’s cited dual-texture settings list PLA, PLA-CF and PLA-GF at 45–65°C with no glue on either side. That temperature range is Bambu’s guidance for its cited plate; use your filament manufacturer’s profile if it differs.
PETG and PETG-CF
Textured PEI is the safer default when the plate maker explicitly supports it. Prusa calls its textured sheet ideal for extensive PETG work, while Bambu lists PETG/PETG-CF at 60–80°C with no glue on the textured side. On smooth PEI, use the specified glue or separation layer: Bambu lists glue on its smooth side, and Prusa warns that unprotected smooth PEI can be damaged during removal.

TPU, TPEE and other flexible filament
Prusa lists its textured sheet as ideal for flexible filaments and says TPU/TPEE needs no glue there. The same guidance warns that smooth PEI may hold TPU too aggressively. Flexible filament also tends to deform when pried, so cooling completely and flexing the spring steel is preferable to scraping at the part.

ABS and ASA
Requirements differ sharply by product. Prusa requires a glue-stick separation layer for ABS and ASA on its textured sheet; its smooth-sheet guidance lists ABS/ASA as suitable but allows a protective layer where needed. Bambu’s cited table sets ABS and ASA at 90–100°C, with glue on the smooth side and none on the textured side. These are manufacturer settings for the named plates, not universal PEI temperatures.
Nylon and PC Blend
Prusa requires a glue-stick separation layer for nylon and PC Blend on its textured sheet. Its smooth-sheet guidance also identifies PC Blend among materials that may need protection. Confirm enclosure, bed temperature and cooling requirements in the filament profile; a PEI finish alone cannot prevent warping in high-shrinkage materials.
CPE and metal or wood composites
Prusa lists CPE for extensive use on its textured sheet and lists metal- and wood-filled composite materials among smooth-sheet uses. Filled filaments can be abrasive or unusually sticky, so inspect the coating and follow the exact sheet instructions after each print.
Bed temperatures and glue: use the plate’s table
Bed temperature and adhesive are a matched system. A setting copied from another printer can cause either poor adhesion or destructive over-adhesion. Bambu’s current dual-texture product table gives these examples:

The table is not a universal PEI profile. Treat it as a starting point only for the cited plate and compatible printer. Prusa’s instructions can differ for a similar material, which is why the plate’s own manual takes precedence over a generic slicer preset.

How to choose the right plate before buying
- Identify the printer family and mounting system. Check the manufacturer’s model list, magnetic orientation, locating cut-outs, thickness and maximum heated-bed temperature.
- Measure the usable area. Bambu’s cited product lists usable print sizes of 256 × 256 mm and 180 × 180 mm for its supported models. Do not infer compatibility from a similar-looking outside dimension.
- Decide which underside finish your parts require. Pick texture for a patterned face and smooth for a continuous face before weighing adhesion.
- Match your most-used filament to the plate’s material table. Look specifically for PETG, TPU, PLA, ABS/ASA, nylon and PC Blend, plus the glue or separation-layer instruction.
- Check care instructions. Cleaning solvents, permitted abrasives and acetone rules vary even between plates using PEI.
- Verify replacement availability. Coatings wear over time and are consumables. Confirm that a replacement sheet is sold for your printer and that both sides, if usable, are intended for printing.
Prusa notes that CORE One and MK-series sheets are interchangeable within its families while using different designs. That does not establish cross-brand compatibility. A sheet must match the printer’s dimensions, magnetic arrangement and firmware or probe clearance.
First-layer setup that matters more than the finish
Calibrate the nozzle distance
Too much clearance leaves gaps and weak corners on either plate; too little clearance can grind filament into the coating and make release dangerous. Run the printer’s first-layer or live-Z calibration with the chosen sheet installed and at the manufacturer’s recommended temperature. Do not reuse a value blindly after changing sheet thickness.
Increase contact area when geometry demands it
Use a brim for small PLA parts on a textured sheet, add a raft only when a brim cannot solve the footprint problem, and orient a model so its broadest stable face is on the bed. These changes address geometry rather than trying to make one finish behave outside its documented range.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the plate flat and correctly seated
Remove trapped filament, dust or a bent corner before installation. A sheet that is not fully seated can produce one-sided first-layer problems that look like an adhesion failure. Confirm that the plate is cool enough to handle and that no clips or locating features obstruct the toolhead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cleaning and release without damaging the coating
Follow the exact solvent rule
Prusa’s general guidance recommends cleaning a cold surface with 90% or stronger isopropyl alcohol or denatured ethyl alcohol and an unscented paper towel, while warning against skin-care products containing oils. Its textured-sheet page specifies approximately 90% IPA or denatured alcohol and says never to use acetone. Its smooth-sheet page permits acetone sparingly, about once or twice per month. Bambu’s cited dual-texture page instead recommends detergent and water, prohibits acetone and says to let the plate cool before removing prints. These instructions conflict because they apply to different products; use the one supplied for your plate.

Clean between changes in filament or handling
Finger oils can create isolated bare spots that look like random under-extrusion. Hold the plate by its edges, clean after touching the print area and dry it completely before heating. Do not add glue simply to compensate for an oily surface.
Release by cooling and flexing
Allow the print and sheet to cool, then flex the spring steel as the manufacturer shows. Prusa recommends cooling and flexing rather than knives or spatulas. Its textured sheet is explicitly not scratch-resistant. A metal edge can gouge the coating, create a permanent low-adhesion patch and make later prints less predictable.

PVA glue is a release aid for materials that can over-bond, not a universal adhesion booster. Apply a thin, even layer when the plate maker’s table calls for it, such as Prusa’s ABS, ASA, nylon and PC Blend guidance on its textured sheet or PETG guidance for a smooth sheet. Excess glue can change the first-layer height and leave an uneven underside.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The first layer will not stick
- Clean the cold plate using the approved method; remove fingerprints and residue.
- Recheck nozzle height and first-layer calibration after confirming that the sheet is seated flat.
- Confirm the bed temperature and filament profile for that exact plate.
- Increase first-layer width or add a brim for a small footprint.
- Inspect for a worn or polished coating; replace the consumable sheet if cleaning and calibration do not restore adhesion.
The corners lift on ABS or ASA
- Verify the manufacturer’s bed-temperature range and enclosure recommendations.
- Use the specified glue or separation layer; do not assume the textured side always needs none.
- Reduce drafts and check that the first layer is fully bonded before walls rise.
The print is impossible to remove
- Let the plate cool fully and flex it instead of prying while warm.
- Check whether PETG or TPU was printed on a smooth sheet without the required protective layer.
- For future jobs, switch to the manufacturer-approved textured side or add the documented separation layer.
- Stop if the coating begins to peel; continued force can permanently damage the sheet.
The bottom finish is inconsistent
- Use the same side of the same product line; textured patterns can vary between sheets.
- Keep first-layer height, bed temperature and cooling consistent.
- Check for residue, scratches or a section of coating that has become smooth with use.
Durability and replacement expectations
Prusa describes its textured sheet as more durable than its smooth sheet with some filaments, but also says the textured coating is not scratch-resistant. It describes the smooth sheet as scratch-resistant while warning that over-adhesion from PETG or TPU can damage it. Both coatings diminish over time, and Prusa treats both sheet types as consumables without guaranteeing a service life. Replace a sheet when repeated cleaning, calibration and correct material settings no longer produce an even first layer, or when the coating is visibly peeling, deeply gouged or permanently contaminated.
Bottom line: choose by finish, material and documentation
Pick textured PEI for a patterned underside and for PETG or flexible filament when the plate maker explicitly supports that combination. Pick smooth PEI for a smooth underside and for PLA parts with small or sharp first-layer areas when the specific sheet is documented for PLA. For ABS, ASA, nylon, PC Blend and PETG on smooth PEI, pay particular attention to separation-layer instructions. Confirm printer fit, calibrate the first layer, clean exactly as directed and let the plate cool before release. Those checks matter more than a generic claim that one PEI finish is always better.
