Textron Aviation’s Citation range runs from the seven-occupant M2 Gen3 to the ten-occupant CJ4 Gen3, with published maximum ranges of 1,550 to 2,165 nautical miles (nm). Those are reference figures produced under stated test assumptions—not guaranteed nonstop distances for every trip. Payload, fuel reserves, weather, runway limits, airport procedures and the exact aircraft variant all change what a real mission can do.
An owner may fly a privately used Citation only after meeting every FAA certificate, type-rating, training, currency, medical and operating requirement. “Single-pilot certified” describes the airplane’s approval, not an exemption for the person in the left seat. Carrying passengers for compensation is a separate commercial operation that requires the appropriate pilot credentials, operator authority and operating rules.

Textron’s current product information gives the following headline figures. “Maximum occupants” means the published seating capacity for the named model or variant; it is not a promise that the airplane can carry that many people, their baggage and full fuel on every route.

Textron product-card performance is based on defined conditions such as standard-day atmosphere, zero wind and NBAA instrument-flight-rules (IFR) reserves. Treat each number as a published reference value, not as a route guarantee. Product pages and aircraft records can also differ by generation, interior layout and installed equipment.

How far can a Textron Citation jet actually fly?
Published maximums are planning starting points
The M2 Gen3’s 1,550 nm, CJ3 Gen3’s 2,040 nm and CJ4 Gen3’s 2,165 nm are maximum-range figures under the manufacturer’s stated assumptions. A route that appears shorter than one of those numbers can still require a fuel stop when the airplane is loaded with passengers and bags, encounters headwinds, departs from a high or hot airport, or must divert around weather.
What reduces practical range
- Payload: Fuel and payload trade against each other. More occupants, baggage or optional equipment can require less fuel or a reduced takeoff weight.
- Wind and temperature: Headwinds increase airborne time and fuel burn; high temperatures and altitude can reduce takeoff performance and climb margins.
- Runway and airport limits: A short, wet or contaminated runway may limit takeoff weight even when en-route fuel would otherwise be adequate.
- Reserves and alternates: IFR planning includes regulatory reserve fuel and, where required, fuel to an alternate airport. A dispatcher or pilot cannot spend the published maximum-range fuel on the planned leg alone.
- Air-traffic routing: A filed route can be longer than the straight-line distance because of airway structure, restricted airspace, weather deviations or holding.
- Aircraft condition: Maintenance status, engine performance, avionics configuration and operating procedures affect the actual result.
How to use a range number responsibly
Start with the exact model and serial-number configuration, then obtain a performance calculation for the proposed airports, date, payload, runway condition, wind and required reserves. The result should state takeoff weight, fuel load, expected landing fuel and diversion assumptions. Do not turn a headline range into a promised city pair or assume that a Gen2 and Gen3 cabin configuration have identical payload capability.
How many passengers can a Citation carry?

Textron lists seven occupants for the Citation M2 Gen3. The word “occupants” matters: the figure includes everyone aboard, including pilots, so the number of available passenger seats depends on whether the aircraft is flown single-pilot or with two pilots and on the installed interior.

CJ3 Gen3
The CJ3 Gen3 is listed at nine occupants. Seat count should be considered alongside baggage volume and weight. A full cabin may require a baggage, fuel or runway compromise on a particular mission.
CJ4 variants
Textron’s current CJ4 Gen3 listing gives 10 occupants, while a CJ4 Gen2 product card says configurations accommodate up to 11. That is a variant and configuration distinction, not a contradiction that can be resolved by quoting simply “CJ4 seats.” Ask for the aircraft’s generation, approved interior layout and weight-and-balance data.
Seats are not the same as usable mission payload
Manufacturers publish a maximum occupancy, but operators still have to remain within maximum takeoff and landing weights, center-of-gravity limits and runway-performance requirements. Passenger size, baggage, catering, fuel temperature and the need for an alternate can all make a lower headcount the sensible choice.

Can an owner fly a Citation privately?
Single-pilot certification applies to the aircraft
Textron’s description of the M2 Gen3 as suited to a single pilot, and its listing of the CJ4 Gen3 as single-pilot certified, means the aircraft’s certification permits operation by one pilot when the applicable conditions and equipment requirements are met. It does not grant an owner a pilot certificate, a type rating or permission to carry passengers for hire.

FAA type-rating rule for turbojets
FAA regulation 14 CFR §61.31 requires a person acting as pilot in command (PIC) of a turbojet-powered airplane to hold the appropriate type rating. The rule also addresses the training and endorsements needed before acting as PIC. A Citation owner therefore needs training in the specific aircraft or an approved simulator program, the required checkride or proficiency evaluation, and any additional limitations imposed by the pilot’s certificate or operating rules.
Other qualifications that remain necessary
- Pilot certificate: The FAA says an applicant for a U.S. private-pilot certificate must log at least 40 hours, including specified instructor and solo components. That is a minimum for the certificate, not a realistic preparation standard for a high-performance turbojet.
- Medical qualification: The pilot must hold the medical qualification and operating privileges required for the planned operation.
- Instrument privileges: A jet normally travels in controlled and instrument conditions, so the pilot needs the applicable instrument rating and must meet instrument currency rules when operating under IFR.
- Training and proficiency: Initial aircraft training, a type-rating checkride where required, recurrent training and proficiency checks keep the qualification current. Insurance companies and lenders may require more experience than the legal minimum.
- Operational currency: Recent takeoffs, landings, instrument practice and other currency items must be maintained before carrying passengers or launching into demanding conditions.
- Aircraft documents and equipment: The airplane must be airworthy, properly maintained and equipped for the intended flight, with required inspections, databases, records and operating limitations current.
A practical owner-pilot plan should budget for an approved training provider, simulator time, recurrent events and a mentor or safety pilot during the early transition period. A professional crew may still be appropriate for long trips, difficult airports or missions where workload and weather exceed the owner’s experience.

Private flying versus carrying paying passengers
Private use
An owner can use a Citation to carry family, friends or business colleagues in a private operation when the pilot, aircraft and operation comply with the applicable rules. The absence of a fare does not remove the need for a qualified PIC, safe planning, airworthiness and passenger-carrying currency.
Compensation changes the legal framework
The FAA states that “Air charter operations require a higher level of FAA pilot training and certification than pilots who may take family or friends for an airplane ride.” It also explains that air transportation requires a commercial or airline-transport pilot license and applicable operating rules, such as those in Part 135, and that a private pilot may not act as PIC for compensation or hire.
That means an owner cannot simply advertise empty seats, accept payment and operate under private-flying privileges. A lawful charter arrangement normally involves an authorized commercial operator, appropriately certificated pilots, an aircraft enrolled and maintained for that operation, approved manuals and procedures, and the required FAA oversight. Before accepting money or exchanging transportation for another benefit, verify the operator’s authority and the exact regulatory structure with aviation counsel or the FAA.

What does it cost to own and maintain a Citation?
There is no single current purchase price or hourly operating cost that applies to every Citation. The amount depends on model and age, avionics and interior specification, acquisition method, financing, annual utilization, crew arrangement, insurance market, fuel prices, maintenance program and resale assumptions. A credible budget uses a specific aircraft and mission profile rather than a generic “private jet” average.
Acquisition and financing
- Purchase price or lease terms for the exact model, year, total time and maintenance status.
- Pre-purchase inspection, records review, title search, escrow, legal work, import or registration costs and initial upgrades.
- Loan interest, down payment, reserves and possible tax or depreciation consequences determined with qualified advisers.
Recurring fixed costs
- Hangar or tiedown, airport fees and ground handling arrangements.
- Insurance premiums, deductibles and any higher limits required for owner-pilots or charter use.
- Pilot salaries or contract crew, training, recurrent checking and travel expenses.
- Subscriptions and updates for navigation databases, charts, connectivity and flight-planning services.
Variable and maintenance costs
- Jet fuel, oil, landing and parking fees, catering and de-icing.
- Scheduled inspections, engine and component reserves, unscheduled repairs and parts.
- Avionics updates, cabin refurbishment, corrosion treatment and modifications.
- Ferry flights and downtime when the airplane is in a maintenance facility.
Textron presents its service network, maintenance, modifications and original-equipment support as ownership resources. When requesting a quote, provide expected annual hours, typical passenger and baggage loads, home base, planned destinations, crew model and the aircraft’s maintenance-program status. Ask for separate fixed, hourly and reserve figures, plus assumptions about fuel price and downtime.
Choosing among the M2, CJ3 and CJ4
Model selection should follow the mission rather than the largest published number. The M2 Gen3 can suit an owner who values a smaller cabin and single-pilot capability for shorter trips. The CJ3 Gen3 adds range and occupancy, while the CJ4 Gen3 offers the longest headline range in this comparison and a larger published occupant figure. The CJ4 Gen2’s up-to-11 configuration demonstrates why generation and interior layout must be specified.

A practical ownership due-diligence checklist
- Define the mission using real city pairs, passenger counts, baggage, annual hours and preferred alternates.
- Shortlist the exact Citation generation and interior configuration; do not compare a generic model name with a specific variant.
- Have a qualified performance specialist calculate representative trips with payload, runway, weather and IFR reserves.
- Confirm the owner-pilot pathway with an FAA-approved training provider, including type-rating, instrument, recurrent and medical requirements.
- Obtain insurance indications before closing; underwriters may set experience, training and mentor-pilot conditions.
- Commission an independent pre-purchase inspection and records audit, including engines, components, damage history, life-limited parts and major inspections.
- Build a five-year budget that separates acquisition, fixed operating costs, hourly costs, maintenance reserves and downtime.
- Decide whether private operation, professional management or a properly certificated charter operator fits the intended use.
- Verify registration, title, liens, import status, maintenance-program enrollment and required equipment before funds are released.
