No—there is no universal rule that text messages delete after one year. On iPhone, Apple Messages lets you choose to keep messages for 30 days, one year, or forever. Google Messages describes archiving and manual deletion, not a default one-year expiry. What happens depends on the app, its settings, and whether you mean the copy on your device, a backup, or the recipient’s copy.
Why some texts disappear and others do not
“Text” can refer to SMS, MMS, RCS, or iMessage. Those message types can use different services, but the retention question usually starts with the messaging app and its settings. Apple’s Messages app supports SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage; its privacy information distinguishes carrier-provided SMS from Apple’s iMessage service. Apple’s Messages privacy overview explains the services and data handling.
On an iPhone, a one-year retention setting can automatically remove messages and attachments from the user’s devices. In Google Messages, archiving hides a conversation from the main screen without deleting it, while deleting a conversation is a separate action. Google’s help pages do not describe a universal one-year expiry for texts.

- Open Settings. Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages. The exact menu path may differ by iOS version; if you do not see it, search Settings for “Keep Messages.”
- Select Forever. Apple offers 30 Days, 1 Year, and Forever. Choosing Forever prevents Messages from automatically removing conversations and attachments based on those time limits.
Apple says that when a non-Forever period is selected, conversations and attachments are removed after that period elapses. Deleting a conversation also affects the user’s other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple’s iPhone guide to deleting messages and attachments describes this behavior.

What happens in Google Messages on Android?
Archived conversations
Archiving removes a conversation from the Google Messages home screen, but the conversation remains readable. If an old thread has disappeared from the main list, check the app’s archived conversations before assuming it was deleted. Google Messages’ archive and delete instructions explain the difference.
Deleted conversations
Google says that deleting a conversation while Google Messages is the default messaging app deletes it from the device and is permanent. Google’s getting-started guide notes that text messages are stored in the device’s SMS database and that other apps may access them subject to permissions. Neither source describes an automatic one-year deletion rule.

Does a backup keep deleted messages recoverable?
Backups are separate from the message-retention setting. Apple says SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage can be backed up in iCloud when iCloud Backup or Messages in iCloud is enabled. Google’s Android backup information lists SMS and MMS, and says RCS messages are backed up when you use Google Messages. These capabilities do not guarantee that a particular deleted message can be recovered.

- On iPhone: Check whether iCloud Backup or Messages in iCloud is enabled in your account and device settings. Apple’s privacy information explains the backup options: Messages and iCloud privacy.
- On Android: Check the device’s backup status and setup before relying on it. Google notes that restore behavior depends on the device and Android version; restoring to a phone running an older Android version can be limited. See Google’s Android backup and restore guidance.
Does deleting a text erase the other person’s copy?
Deleting a conversation on your device does not establish that it has been deleted from the recipient’s device. Apple describes deletion from your iPhone and other Apple devices signed in to your Apple Account; the cited guidance does not say that deletion removes another person’s copy. Keep your device’s message history distinct from a recipient’s copy and from carrier records. The sources cited here do not establish a standard carrier retention period for message content.

When message retention is a work or legal issue
For relevant investigations and enforcement actions, the Federal Trade Commission says communications in messaging and collaboration apps can be subject to document requests and preservation obligations. Its January 2024 statement identifies turning off automatic deletion as an appropriate step and notes that an organization may need to stop using certain applications. This is specific to that regulatory context, not a general rule for every personal conversation. If a workplace records policy or legal hold applies, follow your organization’s instructions. Read the FTC’s statement on collaborative messaging platforms.
