Short answer: tetralayer graphene and magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) flatten electronic bands by different mechanisms. TBG uses a roughly 1.1° rotational misalignment to create a moiré superlattice, while rhombohedral tetralayer graphene uses four-layer stacking, with additional control from displacement fields and interlayer sliding. TBG has the more established record of superconductivity and orbital-magnetic phases; tetralayer graphene offers a distinct route to tunable magnetism, multiferroicity and quantum-anomalous-Hall physics. Neither is a commercial, room-temperature magnetic material or a ready-made quantum-computing component, and there is no standardized head-to-head metric that makes one universally superior.

What is being compared?

These platforms are both built from graphene, but the source of their unusual electronic behavior is different. That distinction determines how researchers tune them, what kinds of magnetic and correlated phases appear, and which fabrication problems dominate.

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Twisted bilayer graphene consists of two graphene sheets rotated relative to one another. At the so-called magic angle of approximately 1.1°, the rotation produces a long-wavelength moiré superlattice and very narrow, or ultra-flat, electronic bands. The moiré wavelength is typically about 10 nm, according to a 2024 editorial in The Innovation Materials.

Flat bands contain little electronic kinetic energy. Coulomb interactions therefore have a much larger influence on the electrons’ behavior than they do in ordinary, dispersive graphene bands. The result is a phase diagram that can include correlated insulating states, superconductivity and orbital ferromagnetism. The 2025 review by G. Feraco and coauthors describes the approximately 1.1° structure as hosting “ultra-flat moiré superlattice bands” that generate highly tunable unconventional quantum phenomena.

Rhombohedral tetralayer graphene

Tetralayer graphene has four graphene layers arranged in a rhombohedral (ABC-type) stacking sequence. Its flat or relatively flat bands arise from the stacking order and the resulting topology of the multilayer electronic structure, not from rotating two layers to a special angle. In rhombohedral multilayer graphene, the bands become flatter as the layer number increases, making four layers an especially useful platform for studying interaction-driven phases.

Researchers can change tetralayer graphene’s behavior with the stacking sequence, layer number, an electric displacement field and relative sliding between layers. A 2026 Nature Nanotechnology paper titled “Interlayer sliding controls magnetism in tetralayer graphene” highlights sliding as a direct magnetic-control mechanism. This is conceptually different from TBG, where the twist angle and moiré geometry are central design parameters.

How the two platforms create flat bands

Feature Magic-angle TBG Rhombohedral tetralayer graphene
Number of graphene layers Two Four
Primary band-flattening mechanism Relative rotation near the approximately 1.1° magic angle creates a moiré superlattice Rhombohedral stacking creates topological multilayer bands that flatten as layer number increases
Characteristic length scale Approximately 10 nm moiré wavelength for small-angle devices No twist-generated moiré wavelength is required; behavior is set by stacking and electrostatic environment
Main geometric control Twist angle, plus pressure and strain that can modify the moiré bands Stacking sequence and controlled interlayer sliding
Typical electronic controls Carrier-density gates, displacement field, magnetic field, pressure and strain Carrier density, displacement field, magnetic field and interlayer sliding

“Flatter” does not automatically mean “better.” Flatness enhances interaction effects, but the useful phase, its energy scale, and its reproducibility also depend on disorder, dielectric environment, alignment, contacts, electrostatic screening and measurement temperature.

Which has more controllable magnetism?

There is no single winner because the platforms offer different kinds of control. TBG supplies an unusually rich set of electrical and geometric knobs. Tetralayer graphene adds a structural knob—interlayer sliding—that can directly alter magnetic order in addition to gates and fields.

TBG: moiré geometry plus electrostatics

  • Twist angle: Small changes around 1.1° alter the moiré period, bandwidth and filling conditions. Reaching and maintaining the target angle is a fabrication challenge.
  • Carrier-density gates: Electrostatic gates move the Fermi level through the narrow bands and tune the filling at which correlated phases occur.
  • Displacement field: An electric field applied across the layers changes layer polarization and can reshape the phase diagram.
  • Magnetic field: Field-dependent measurements probe orbital, spin and topological responses and can distinguish competing phases.
  • Pressure and strain: These perturb the interlayer coupling and moiré bands, providing additional ways to move between phases.

This combination makes TBG highly tunable once a uniform, near-magic-angle device has been fabricated. The trade-off is sensitivity: spatial variations in twist angle or strain can produce different local band structures in one device.

Tetralayer graphene: stacking, sliding and displacement field

  • Stacking sequence: Rhombohedral stacking determines the topology and low-energy band structure. A stacking fault can create a different electronic system from the intended tetralayer.
  • Layer number: Increasing the number of rhombohedrally stacked layers generally flattens the relevant bands further; tetralayer graphene is one member of that multilayer family.
  • Displacement field: A perpendicular electric field changes the potential difference across the stack and can switch or reorganize interaction-driven states.
  • Interlayer sliding: Relative lateral motion between layers changes registry and interlayer coupling. The 2026 Nature Nanotechnology work identifies this as a control of magnetism rather than merely a structural imperfection.
  • Magnetic field and carrier density: As in TBG, these parameters help map the phase diagram and separate spin, valley, orbital and topological contributions.

Tetralayer devices may therefore be attractive when the experiment needs a mechanically or structurally addressable magnetic degree of freedom. Sliding control is also a demanding engineering problem: it requires preserving clean interfaces and knowing the local stacking configuration while the layers are displaced.

What magnetic and correlated phases have been observed?

Phases associated with twisted bilayer graphene

Since the first major reports in 2018, the TBG literature has documented superconductivity, correlated insulating states, orbital magnetism and quantum anomalous Hall effects. The exact phase sequence depends on filling, displacement field, disorder, magnetic field, temperature and device quality. “Mott-like” is often used for insulating behavior driven by strong correlations; it does not imply that every TBG insulator is a textbook Mott insulator.

Orbital ferromagnetism is especially important in TBG because the moiré bands can carry nontrivial orbital character and topology. Under suitable conditions, interactions can favor a state with a net orbital magnetic response. Quantum anomalous Hall behavior links that magnetism to a quantized electrical response without an externally applied magnetic field in the idealized measurement regime, although the observed response is device- and condition-dependent.

Phases associated with rhombohedral multilayers, including tetralayers

Rhombohedral multilayer graphene has produced reports of isospin-polarized metals, orbital multiferroicity, and integer and fractional quantum anomalous Hall effects. “Isospin” here refers collectively to internal flavor labels such as spin, valley or related band indices; an isospin-polarized metal can break flavor symmetry without becoming an ordinary ferromagnet.

Orbital multiferroicity is a particularly notable distinction. It describes coupled electric and magnetic order arising from orbital degrees of freedom, rather than relying only on conventional atomic magnetic moments. Reports of integer and fractional quantum anomalous Hall states show that multilayer graphene can support both integer and interaction-enabled fractional topological responses, but these are specialized low-temperature measurements, not room-temperature device demonstrations.

The evidence does not justify saying that every tetralayer sample exhibits these phases, or that tetralayer graphene has surpassed TBG. Results depend on stacking quality, electrostatic tuning, sample geometry and measurement conditions.

Numbers that help calibrate expectations

Several published figures are useful reference points, but they are not a direct benchmark between the two platforms.

Quantity Reported value and qualification
Magic angle in TBG Approximately 1.1°, reported in the 2025 TBG review and a 2024 editorial
Typical TBG moiré wavelength Approximately 10 nm, as stated by The Innovation Materials in 2024
Cited superlattice band gap About 40 meV in the Feraco et al. review’s discussion of a cited TBG result
Cited activation energy Approximately 0.32 meV for a cited half-filled insulating state; this is a specific reported state, not a universal TBG value
Room-temperature graphene mobility benchmark More than 20,000 cm²/Vs in hBN-encapsulated graphene under phonon-limited conditions, reported by The Innovation Materials in 2024; it is a graphene-material benchmark, not a tetralayer-versus-TBG measurement

The 40 meV and 0.32 meV figures should not be read as an operating temperature specification. Interaction-driven phases in these experiments are generally observed at low temperatures, and the relevant transition or activation scales vary among devices.

Fabrication, uniformity and reproducibility

Why TBG is difficult to reproduce

TBG requires two graphene layers to be assembled at a controlled relative angle close to 1.1°. The angle must be uniform across the active area, and local strain or wrinkles can change the moiré pattern. Small angular deviations can shift the bandwidth and the carrier densities at which correlated phases appear. Encapsulation and clean interfaces help preserve high-quality transport, but they add process complexity.

Device-to-device differences are therefore not surprising. Two samples nominally labeled “magic angle” can show different phase boundaries or magnetic signals because of angle inhomogeneity, dielectric screening, disorder, contact geometry or gate calibration.

Why tetralayer graphene is difficult to reproduce

Tetralayer fabrication does not require setting a 1.1° twist, but it does require the intended rhombohedral stacking to remain intact through exfoliation, assembly and contacting. Stacking faults, layer tears and contamination can change the low-energy bands. Experiments that use interlayer sliding must additionally control and measure the relative registry of the layers without introducing damage or uncontrolled strain.

Electrostatic uniformity matters in both platforms. A displacement field that is nominally the same across a device may be modified locally by trapped charge, dielectric thickness variations or contact screening. Reproducible magnetic conclusions therefore require mapping the relevant gate voltages, temperature, field history and spatial homogeneity rather than relying on one resistance trace.

Measurement conditions and what “magnetism” means here

In these systems, magnetism can refer to several experimentally distinct phenomena: spin polarization, valley or isospin polarization, orbital ferromagnetism, hysteretic orbital response, or a quantum anomalous Hall state with a quantized transverse conductance. A resistance anomaly alone does not establish which mechanism is present.

Most reported correlated and topological phases in TBG and rhombohedral multilayers come from small devices measured at low temperature. Researchers combine transport with magnetic-field sweeps, thermodynamic or local probes, gate dependence and, where possible, nonlocal or hysteresis measurements. The mechanism can remain under debate even when a phase label is widely used, so claims should specify the observable and conditions.

Are either materials practical technologies yet?

Not as commercial products in the sense implied by a finished transistor, magnet or quantum-computing module. The strongest defensible applications today are research platforms:

  • Quantum simulation: Tunable narrow bands let researchers emulate strongly interacting lattice models and investigate phases that are difficult to access in conventional solids.
  • Topological-electronics research: Quantum anomalous Hall and related orbital responses provide test beds for low-dissipation or topologically protected transport concepts.
  • Low-power and spin/valley electronics: Electric fields, carrier density and internal flavor polarization offer possible routes to switching information in orbital, spin or valley degrees of freedom.
  • Quantum-metrology studies: Quantized Hall responses and sensitive magnetic transitions can be used to explore precision standards and detection schemes.

These are research directions, not validated product specifications. The 2024 editorial places graphene’s broader application space in flexible electronics, high-frequency transistors, transparent conductive coatings, advanced composites, energy storage and sensors. Those opportunities apply to the wider graphene family; they do not show that tetralayer graphene or TBG has already displaced an industrial material in any of those products.

Which platform should a research group choose?

The right choice depends on the control variable and phase of interest, not on a generic ranking.

Choose TBG when the experiment needs

  • A moiré superlattice with a well-developed literature on correlated insulating states and superconductivity.
  • Systematic sweeps of twist angle, carrier filling and displacement field.
  • Direct comparison with the large body of magic-angle phase-diagram work.
  • Study of orbital magnetism and quantum anomalous Hall behavior tied to moiré topology.

Choose tetralayer graphene when the experiment needs

  • A stacking-driven flat-band platform without deliberately rotating two sheets to the magic angle.
  • Investigation of rhombohedral multilayer topology, isospin-polarized metals or orbital multiferroicity.
  • Interlayer sliding as an experimental control of magnetic order.
  • Comparison of integer and fractional quantum anomalous Hall phenomena in a multilayer setting.

Questions to answer before building either device

  1. What is the target observable? Define whether the goal is superconductivity, hysteretic magnetism, a Hall plateau, flavor polarization or another measurable signature.
  2. What control is essential? TBG demands angle and strain control; tetralayer work demands stacking verification and, for sliding experiments, registry control.
  3. What temperature and field range are available? The relevant phases are generally low-temperature phenomena, so cryogenic measurement capability and calibrated magnetic-field sweeps are necessary.
  4. How will inhomogeneity be detected? Plan checks for twist-angle variation, stacking faults, trapped charge, contact effects and spatially varying displacement field.
  5. What constitutes reproducibility? Repeat across devices and gate sweeps, report the full measurement conditions, and distinguish a transport anomaly from a demonstrated magnetic or topological order parameter.

Common misconceptions and failure modes

“Tetralayer graphene is simply a four-layer version of magic-angle graphene.”

No. TBG’s defining ingredient is a small rotational mismatch and its moiré lattice. Tetralayer graphene’s defining ingredient in this comparison is rhombohedral stacking. Both can produce flat bands, but their band topology, control parameters and fabrication tolerances differ.

“A flat band guarantees superconductivity or ferromagnetism.”

Flatness increases the importance of interactions; it does not determine the ground state by itself. Filling, screening, disorder, symmetry breaking and temperature decide which phase appears.

“Quantum anomalous Hall means room-temperature operation.”

It does not. The cited integer and fractional effects are low-temperature, small-device results. No evidence here supports a room-temperature tetralayer or TBG magnet.

“The highest mobility number identifies the better platform.”

Mobility measures transport scattering under specified conditions. It does not rank the stability of correlated phases, the strength of orbital magnetism or the ease of controlling interlayer structure. The greater-than-20,000 cm²/Vs figure is a graphene benchmark, not a head-to-head result.

Bottom line for 2026

Magic-angle TBG remains the more established reference platform for moiré-driven superconductivity, correlated insulating behavior and orbital magnetism, with powerful electrical, magnetic, pressure and strain controls. Rhombohedral tetralayer graphene provides a complementary stacking-driven route whose distinctive strengths include multilayer topology, orbital multiferroicity and interlayer-sliding control of magnetism. Both remain laboratory research systems. Scalable production, precise structural control, spatial homogeneity, cost and integration are unresolved barriers, so the scientifically accurate answer is not that one is universally better, but that each is optimized for a different experimental question.
