In a Windows Central hands-on test, an early leaked build of Microsoft’s redesigned Xbox PC app made Xbox Ally navigation dramatically smoother. The test found that the old app’s rubber-banding, queued button presses and slow loading were gone or greatly reduced. That is meaningful progress for a handheld controlled mainly with sticks, buttons and a directional pad—but it is not evidence of a finished release. Microsoft has not confirmed a public launch date or final feature list.
What was tested
Windows Central Executive Editor Jez Corden installed the leaked build on an Xbox Ally and compared it directly with the existing Xbox PC app on the same handheld context. His report, published October 15, 2026, describes a software build that is still early and unfinished.
This distinction matters: the results show how the new interface behaved in one hands-on test, not how every Xbox Ally model will perform after a broad rollout. No independent latency measurements, loading-time figures, frame-time data or user survey were published.
The biggest change is responsive navigation
Rubber-banding and queued inputs are gone in the tested build
On the older app, Corden says the interface could become stuck for several seconds. Button presses made during that pause could queue up and then execute together, causing the highlighted item to jump unpredictably—a behavior he described as “rubber banding.”

- GAME-READY STORAGE AND FAST MEMORY Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
In the leaked build, he reported that the rubber-banding was completely gone, even though the software remained in an early state. Inputs responded as expected instead of producing a delayed burst of movement. For a handheld, where users often navigate with physical controls rather than a mouse, that change affects the basic usability of every screen.
Large lists feel usable
Corden found that moving through very large game lists became smooth and pleasant. The improvement was qualitative rather than a measured benchmark, but it addresses one of the most visible weaknesses of the existing PC app: navigation that could feel hesitant or unpredictable when a library contained many titles.
Loading improves across the app
The hands-on report says loading was much faster across several parts of the Xbox experience:

The source does not provide exact load times or percentage improvements, so “faster” should be read as an observed hands-on difference, not a laboratory result. Still, faster transitions across both library and store surfaces would reduce the friction of choosing, installing and launching games on a handheld PC.
Navigation is more d-pad friendly
The redesigned app felt more naturally oriented around directional-pad input. Corden says the existing app could move a cursor diagonally when a player expected a console-style directional step. That behavior is particularly awkward on a device whose controls are arranged for gamepad navigation.
The early build reportedly behaves in a way that better matches directional movement: focus moves predictably between tiles and menus instead of drifting diagonally. This is a usability improvement rather than a new capability, but it brings the Windows handheld experience closer to the navigation model Xbox players already understand.

Old app versus leaked build
| Area | Existing Xbox PC app on Xbox Ally | Early leaked build in the hands-on test |
|---|---|---|
| Input response | Could pause for several seconds and queue button presses. | Reportedly responsive, with queued-input behavior no longer observed. |
| Rubber-banding | Highlighted items could jump after delayed inputs. | Reportedly absent in the test. |
| Large libraries | Navigation could feel slow or unpredictable. | Reportedly smooth and pleasant, including large lists. |
| Loading | Slower transitions across multiple panels. | Reportedly much faster across libraries, store pages and game pages. |
| Directional control | Could move diagonally when a user expected directional movement. | Felt more naturally d-pad oriented. |
| Feature breadth | Existing feature set. | Few major new features were present in the tested build. |
| Release status | Available app. | Leaked, early and unfinished; final timing unclear. |
What the test does not establish
The build does not prove that Microsoft has finished the redesign or that the tested behavior will ship unchanged. Microsoft was expected to add features before launch, and Corden said complaints raised during an earlier demonstration had already been addressed in internal builds. He expected Xbox Insider availability on PC toward the end of 2026, but the exact shipping date was unclear.
It also does not establish that every Xbox Ally configuration will behave identically, or that the same interface and performance will appear simultaneously in Xbox Cloud Gaming, Game Bar or other Xbox surfaces. The report notes that Xbox Cloud Gaming was receiving an interface visually close to the new PC app, while the future treatment of the Game Bar guide remained uncertain.

The navigation gains do not solve every broader Xbox PC issue. The report identifies several areas that still need attention:

- Custom backgrounds and other personalization options
- Faster access to store data and screenshots
- Better search quality
- Native mod support
- Ways for players to interact with developers and their communities
- More complete social features
These omissions explain why the build should be viewed as a usability overhaul in progress, not a finished handheld operating environment.
Why this matters for Xbox handheld gaming
Windows handheld PCs compete with interfaces designed specifically for portable play. The report frames SteamOS as part of the pressure encouraging Microsoft to improve Windows gaming usability and performance. Xbox Play Anywhere and PC Game Pass remain important parts of Microsoft’s broader ecosystem, but software consistency still matters when a player moves between console, PC and handheld hardware.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The report also cites a separate ecosystem problem involving Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon, which shipped two Xbox Play Anywhere builds, including a console build that would not run on PC. That example is not evidence about the new app’s navigation performance; it illustrates why a polished launcher must be paired with reliable game-build support.
Verdict: a major usability step, not a finished product
For the specific task tested—navigating an Xbox Ally with physical controls—the early app appears to be a substantial improvement. Eliminating rubber-banding, preventing queued inputs, speeding up library and store loading, and making focus movement more d-pad friendly address the problems users notice every minute they use the launcher.
The appropriate conclusion is narrower than “the new Xbox PC app is finished.” It is a strong qualitative result from one hands-on test of a leaked build. Feature completeness, final performance, compatibility across Xbox Ally models and the public release schedule remain unresolved until Microsoft ships an official version.
