Short answer: Tesla is primarily an electric-vehicle company with a growing energy-storage business. SpaceX earns money from two reported activities: launching spacecraft and operating Starlink connectivity. Tesla’s 2025 segment revenue was $82.056 billion from automotive and $12.771 billion from energy generation and storage. SpaceX reported $4.086 billion from its Space segment and $11.387 billion from Connectivity. On the reported 2025 figures, Tesla generated far more revenue overall, while SpaceX’s Connectivity segment produced $4.423 billion in operating income.
The companies are not one corporation, and Tesla does not own SpaceX. Their practical connections are Elon Musk’s leadership, disclosed dealings with affiliated companies, and overlapping capabilities in manufacturing, software, artificial intelligence, energy systems, communications and aerospace infrastructure.
How Tesla makes money
Tesla reports two operating segments in its 2025 Form 10-K: automotive, and energy generation and storage. Automotive is the much larger business, but energy grew faster in 2025 and is strategically important because it sells infrastructure with potentially repeatable commercial demand rather than only individual vehicles.

| Energy generation and storage | $12.771 billion | Design, manufacture, installation, sales, leasing, financing and related services for generation and storage products, plus energy-generation incentives |
Adding the two reported segment figures gives $94.827 billion in 2025 segment revenue. That sum is useful for comparing the businesses in this article, but it should not be treated as a separately quoted consolidated figure unless Tesla presents it that way in a particular table.

Automotive: vehicles plus a large set of related services
Tesla’s filing defines the automotive segment broadly: “The automotive segment includes the design, development, manufacturing, sales and leasing of electric vehicles as well as sales of automotive regulatory credits.” The segment also captures revenue streams that occur after a vehicle is built or sold.
- Vehicle sales: Revenue from new electric cars remains the core source of automotive revenue.
- Leasing: Tesla recognizes income from vehicles supplied under lease arrangements rather than only outright purchases.
- Regulatory credits: Tesla sells credits earned under emissions and zero-emission rules. These sales do not require Tesla to manufacture an additional vehicle for the buyer, so they are a distinct policy-dependent revenue stream.
- Used vehicles: The automotive segment includes sales of pre-owned Tesla vehicles.
- Service and repair: Maintenance, collision work and parts provide revenue from the installed vehicle base.
- Charging and insurance: Paid Supercharging and insurance are included among related automotive activities.
- Merchandise and other services: These are small compared with vehicle sales but are still part of the segment’s reported scope.
This mix means “Tesla revenue” is not identical to the number of new cars delivered in a year. A vehicle can generate later service, charging, insurance, parts and used-car activity, while regulatory-credit revenue depends on rules and the market for credits.
Energy generation and storage: Megapack and Powerwall deployments
Tesla’s second segment covers both generation and storage products. The company’s description includes design, manufacturing, installation, sales, leasing, financing and related services, as well as sales of energy-generation incentives.
Energy-generation-and-storage revenue reached $12.771 billion in 2025, up 27% from the prior year. Tesla attributed the increase primarily to higher deployments of Megapack and Powerwall products. Megapack is aimed at larger-scale commercial and utility storage, while Powerwall is a residential energy-storage product. The segment therefore serves a mix of household, commercial and grid customers rather than a single buyer type.
Storage projects can be larger and more contract-like than a consumer vehicle purchase. They also depend on installation schedules, permitting, financing, local electricity markets and incentive programs. Tesla’s reported segment includes those related activities, so the revenue figure reflects more than hardware shipments alone.
How SpaceX makes money
SpaceX reports two segments in its 2025 prospectus: Space and Connectivity. Space covers launch and development work. Connectivity is centered on Starlink and includes consumer, enterprise, mobile and government connectivity.
| SpaceX segment | 2025 revenue | Reported profitability or drivers |
|---|---|---|
| Space | $4.086 billion | Launch services and launch-and-development work; growth was helped by an extended NASA Cargo Resupply Services contract and a U.S. government contract |
| Connectivity | $11.387 billion | Starlink-led consumer, enterprise, mobile and government connectivity; $4.423 billion of operating income |
The two reported figures total $15.473 billion for 2025. SpaceX is not a public company with the same quarterly reporting framework as Tesla, so its prospectus is the appropriate source for these reported segment numbers. Do not replace them with third-party estimates of SpaceX’s private-company value or revenue.

Space: launch services and development work
SpaceX sells launches and related development services to commercial customers and government agencies. Its customers can include satellite operators, scientific and civil-space programs, and national-security users. The Space segment’s growth in 2025 was driven partly by an extended NASA Cargo Resupply Services contract and a U.S. government contract.
Launch cadence is an important operating variable. SpaceX reported 165 Falcon launches in 2025, compared with 134 in 2024. More launches can increase revenue capacity, but launch revenue is not a simple per-launch subscription: missions differ in payload, contract terms, development requirements and customer type.
Government work can provide substantial, multi-year demand, but it also brings procurement rules, milestone requirements and dependence on agency budgets. A launch provider must fund vehicles, launch sites, testing, recovery operations and engineering before receiving the full economic benefit of a mission.
Connectivity: Starlink subscriptions and network services
Connectivity is SpaceX’s larger reported segment by revenue. Starlink sells broadband and related connectivity to consumers, enterprises, mobile users and governments. Revenue growth in the prospectus was attributed to all four customer categories.
The prospectus says consumer-subscriber revenue growth reflected 99.9% growth in Starlink subscribers, partly offset by an 11.2% decline in subscriber average revenue per user. The lower average revenue per user was associated with international expansion and the addition of lower-priced plans. In other words, subscriber growth was exceptionally strong, but the geographic mix reduced the average amount collected per subscriber.
Connectivity has a recurring-revenue characteristic that launch contracts generally do not: subscribers can pay periodically for ongoing service. That does not make the business risk-free. Starlink must continue deploying satellites, ground infrastructure and customer equipment, and it must obtain spectrum, landing rights and other regulatory approvals in each market.
SpaceX reported $4.423 billion of operating income for Connectivity in 2025. That figure is segment operating income, not a claim that every SpaceX activity or the company as a whole produced the same margin.

Which company makes more money?
By 2025 reported revenue, Tesla is larger. Its two segment figures sum to $94.827 billion, versus $15.473 billion for SpaceX’s two reported segments. Tesla’s automotive revenue alone was more than five times SpaceX’s total reported segment revenue.

That comparison is about revenue, not valuation, cash flow or total profit. Tesla discloses a public-company filing with segment revenue and gross-profit information. SpaceX’s prospectus provides segment revenue, costs and operating income, including the Connectivity operating-income figure above. Because the disclosures are not identical in format, a precise company-wide profit comparison requires care.
Growth rates and business maturity
Tesla’s energy segment grew 27% in 2025, primarily because of higher Megapack and Powerwall deployments. Automotive revenue is much larger, so even a smaller percentage change in that segment can have a greater dollar effect on Tesla’s total revenue.
SpaceX’s Connectivity growth combined a 99.9% increase in consumer subscribers with an 11.2% decline in consumer average revenue per user. The result illustrates why subscriber growth and revenue growth are different measures: adding customers in lower-priced markets can expand the network while reducing the average revenue per account.
SpaceX also increased Falcon launches from 134 to 165 between 2024 and 2025. Launch volume is a useful capacity indicator, but it should not be read as a direct measure of profit because missions have different prices and costs.

Tesla has a visible consumer business in vehicles, home storage and charging, alongside commercial and utility energy projects. Its automotive services touch consumers after purchase, while Megapack projects can involve utilities, developers and large businesses.
SpaceX combines a consumer-facing subscription business with enterprise, mobile and government connectivity. Its launch business is more concentrated in institutional customers, including government agencies and satellite operators. This gives SpaceX a different revenue mix: a broad subscriber base in Connectivity and contract-driven missions in Space.

Capital intensity and research spending
Both companies require substantial upfront investment, but the assets differ. Tesla invests in vehicle factories, battery production, charging infrastructure, software and energy-product manufacturing. SpaceX invests in rockets, spacecraft, launch sites, satellite production, ground stations and network capacity.
Neither company’s segment revenue alone tells you how much cash must be reinvested to sustain growth. A launch provider can report more missions while funding expensive development programs; a vehicle and storage manufacturer can report higher deliveries while expanding factories and service capacity. Research-and-development expense, capital expenditure, depreciation and cash flow should therefore be examined separately from revenue.
Where Tesla and SpaceX overlap
Shared leadership, not shared ownership
Elon Musk is the central governance link. Tesla’s official biography states: “Elon has also served as Chief Executive Officer, Chief Technology Officer and Chairman of Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, an advanced rocket and spacecraft manufacturing and services company (‘SpaceX ’), since May 2002.”
That shared leadership can influence strategic priorities and the movement of personnel or ideas, but it does not mean Tesla and SpaceX are a single company. They have separate corporate identities, reporting systems, assets, customers and contracts.
Affiliated-company dealings
Tesla’s 2025 filing says it periodically does business with certain entities affiliated with its chief executive and directors, including SpaceX, xAI, The Boring Company and Redwood Materials, under Tesla’s Related Person Transactions Policy.
The cited disclosure does not quantify a material 2025 Tesla–SpaceX transaction. It is therefore accurate to say that affiliated-company dealings are disclosed as a governance category, not to claim a particular dollar amount, supply agreement or operational dependency.

- Advanced manufacturing: Both depend on designing complex hardware, improving production yield and managing specialized supply chains.
- Software and artificial intelligence: Tesla uses software in vehicles, energy products and autonomy-related systems; SpaceX uses software for launch operations, satellites, network management and customer service.
- Energy systems: Tesla sells batteries and grid-storage products. SpaceX’s satellite network requires substantial electrical power, ground infrastructure and reliable facilities, although that does not make SpaceX an energy-storage company.
- Communications and infrastructure: Tesla’s vehicles and charging network exchange data, while Starlink delivers broadband through a satellite constellation and ground network.
- Aerospace and transportation infrastructure: SpaceX is directly engaged in rockets and spacecraft; Tesla is not a rocket company, even if some engineering and manufacturing disciplines overlap.
These are capability similarities, not evidence of a combined product line or a measured financial synergy. No authoritative published figure establishes total Tesla–SpaceX synergies or combined revenue.
Does Tesla own SpaceX?
No. The available filings and biographies describe separate companies with a common high-profile leader and possible related-party dealings. They do not establish that Tesla owns SpaceX, that SpaceX is a Tesla subsidiary, or that the companies have merged.
The safest way to describe the relationship is: Elon Musk leads both organizations; Tesla discloses that it may transact with affiliated entities including SpaceX; and the businesses operate in adjacent technology areas while reporting separate revenue segments.
Why the business models matter
Recurring connectivity versus product and project sales
Starlink connectivity can generate continuing subscription revenue from an installed customer base. Tesla’s vehicles and storage systems are primarily product sales or project deployments, although leasing, service, charging, insurance and other activities add continuing revenue after the initial sale.
Recurring revenue can improve visibility, but it also requires ongoing network investment and customer retention. Product and project businesses can produce large invoices at delivery or commissioning, but revenue can vary with production schedules, inventory, permitting and customer timing.
Regulatory dependence
Tesla’s regulatory-credit revenue and energy incentives depend on government rules. Vehicle sales also depend on safety, emissions, trade and market-access requirements. SpaceX depends on launch approvals, spectrum and operating permissions, plus government contracts and agency programs. Regulation is therefore material to both companies, but through different channels.
Government contracts
SpaceX’s 2025 Space-segment growth was partly linked to an extended NASA Cargo Resupply Services contract and a U.S. government contract. Such agreements can provide demand and technical validation, yet they are subject to procurement processes, contract performance and future budget decisions. Tesla sells to consumers and commercial energy customers at greater scale, but its policy-linked credit and incentive revenue also reflects government frameworks.

Use the same definitions each time you compare the companies. Start with segment revenue, then separate recurring connectivity from vehicle or project sales. Check whether a number is a segment figure, a consolidated figure, operating income or gross profit. Note the fiscal year, customer geography and whether growth came from more customers, higher prices, more deployments or a change in mix.
- For Tesla, track automotive revenue separately from energy-generation-and-storage revenue and watch Megapack and Powerwall deployments.
- For SpaceX, track Space and Connectivity separately, including Falcon launch counts, subscriber growth and average revenue per user.
- Do not infer company-wide profitability from SpaceX’s Connectivity operating income.
- Do not treat a shared executive or a related-party disclosure as proof of ownership or a quantified synergy.
- Do not compare private-company estimates with audited or filed figures as if they were equivalent.
The bottom line
Tesla makes most of its money by selling and leasing electric vehicles and related automotive services, with energy generation and storage as its second reported segment. SpaceX makes money from launch and development services and, increasingly, from Starlink-led connectivity. Tesla was the larger business by reported 2025 revenue, while SpaceX’s Connectivity segment supplied a substantial recurring-services engine and reported $4.423 billion in operating income. Their overlap is real but limited to shared leadership, disclosed affiliated-company dealings and adjacent technical capabilities—not common ownership or a merged business.
