The most effective way to reduce Tesla data sharing is on the vehicle touchscreen: open Controls > Software > Data Sharing, then switch off every optional vehicle-data, road-segment or analytics, and cabin-camera sharing option you do not need. You can change these choices later. This limits what Tesla receives, but it does not stop the car from processing its location for maps, navigation, safety systems, or from transmitting information during certain serious safety events.
Start with the vehicle’s Data Sharing menu
Tesla puts the primary privacy controls in the car rather than behind a separate desktop utility. From the touchscreen, go to Controls > Software > Data Sharing. The exact wording and number of switches can differ by model, software version, and region, so read the description beside each option before changing it.
- Park the vehicle and open Controls on the touchscreen.
- Select Software.
- Open Data Sharing.
- Review each optional switch, including vehicle-data sharing, road-segment or analytics sharing, and cabin-camera analytics when those options appear.
- Turn off any category you do not need, then confirm the change if the car presents a confirmation prompt.
Tesla says owners can change these choices at any time. Recheck the menu after a major software update because labels, grouping, and the availability of a particular control can change.

The menu is not a single “stop all tracking” button. Each switch covers a different type of information, and disabling one does not automatically disable the others.

Do not infer from a switch name that all information of that type leaves the car. Tesla says most camera processing occurs on the vehicle, and the menu’s explanatory text is the authoritative description for your particular car and software release.
Why turning off sharing does not make the car location-blind
A Tesla still uses its position locally. Maps, turn-by-turn navigation, route calculations, and related vehicle functions need a current location. Disabling optional sharing therefore does not remove the location indicator, erase the car’s ability to navigate, or prevent onboard systems from using positioning data.
Tesla’s privacy materials state that, unless there is a serious safety concern such as an accident, it generally does not associate ordinary vehicle location with the owner’s account or keep a history of where the owner has been. That is a statement about Tesla’s handling of location, not a promise that no location data is ever processed.
Safety-event exceptions
Tesla documents exceptions for events such as a collision, airbag deployment, or automatic emergency braking. Depending on the event and the information needed, location or camera information can be transmitted to support emergency response and safety improvement. Optional-sharing switches cannot be used to opt out of information that Tesla needs for those safety purposes.

What this means in practice
- You can reduce routine, optional transmission while retaining navigation and safety features.
- The car may still process location on board even when every optional sharing switch is off.
- A severe safety event can cause data to leave the vehicle despite your ordinary preferences.
Manage privacy from the Tesla app and account
Vehicle switches are only one layer. The Tesla app and account contain controls for information associated with your account and for formal privacy requests.
Request a copy of stored data
Use the account’s Security & Privacy area and follow Tesla’s Data Privacy Request flow to ask for a copy of stored, account-associated data. The response can help you see which account details Tesla holds, rather than assuming that the touchscreen settings cover everything.
Delete the Tesla Account
The same account controls provide an account-deletion flow. Deletion is not an eraser for every record: Tesla may retain transaction information or other data required by law, financial rules, or an ongoing legal proceeding. If you need records for a dispute, warranty matter, or tax purpose, obtain them before submitting deletion.
Protect the account itself
- Use a unique password for the Tesla account.
- Review sign-in and security options in the app rather than assuming that vehicle data settings protect account credentials.
- Remove access for people or services that no longer need to control the car.
Third-party apps are a separate location and command risk
An app connected to your Tesla can receive information under a permission grant that is separate from Tesla’s own optional-sharing controls. Tesla says connected apps must request permission and that you can revoke it. The app’s own terms and privacy policy govern what it does with information after it receives it.

Audit each connected service
- Open the Tesla app’s account or security-and-privacy controls.
- List every connected app or service, including ones you tried only once.
- For each service, inspect the permissions it holds.
- Revoke Vehicle Location unless that service genuinely needs it.
- Revoke live vehicle-data, charging-history, and vehicle-command permissions that are not essential.
- After revoking access, remove the service from the third party as well, if its own account page offers that option.
Revocation prevents future authorized access; it does not necessarily delete copies the third party already downloaded. Use that company’s privacy request or deletion process if you need previously received data removed.
Choose permissions by function

Camera, Sentry Mode, voice, and browser data
Sentry Mode and Dashcam recordings
Tesla says Sentry Mode and Dashcam recordings are generally stored on the vehicle or on attached external storage and are not shared with Tesla. That storage location is different from optional cabin-camera analytics. Protect the USB drive or other storage physically, because anyone who obtains it can read the recordings.
Cabin-camera analytics
Cabin-camera analytics are off unless the owner enables the sharing option. To check the control, open Controls > Software > Data Sharing and look for Allow Cabin Camera Analytics or equivalent wording. Safety-critical events remain an exception described in Tesla’s privacy materials.

Tesla’s data-request table lists voice commands and browsing history as processed on the vehicle and not shared with Tesla. That describes Tesla’s handling of those categories; it does not prevent another person with physical access to the car or its account from seeing information displayed locally. Clear local destinations, browser entries, or profiles when handing the vehicle to someone else.

Does Tesla sell personal information?
Tesla states: “We do not sell your personal information to anyone for any purpose, period.” That statement addresses sale of personal information. It does not mean that no data is processed, that no safety exception exists, or that a third-party app follows Tesla’s policy. A connected service remains governed by its own privacy terms.
A practical privacy configuration
Use the following decision sequence instead of switching features off blindly:
- Reduce optional sharing first. Disable vehicle-data, road-segment or analytics, and cabin-camera analytics options that do not provide a benefit you value.
- Keep required local functions. Expect maps, navigation, and safety systems to continue using location inside the vehicle.
- Separate safety from convenience. Accept that collision, airbag, automatic-emergency-braking, or comparable safety events can trigger transmission despite ordinary preferences.
- Audit external access. Revoke location, live data, charging history, and command permissions from apps you no longer trust or use.
- Review account records. Request a data copy if you need to know what is associated with your account; delete the account only after considering legal and financial retention.
This approach preserves navigation and safety while reducing routine data flows and the number of organizations that can see vehicle information.

The Data Sharing menu is missing
Confirm that you are looking under Controls > Software, not only in the mobile app. Menu availability varies by model, software version, and region. Install an available vehicle software update, restart the touchscreen if it is unresponsive, and check again while the car is parked.

A switch returns after an update
Read the updated description rather than assuming the old setting still maps to the same category. Software can rename or regroup controls. Record your preferred choices and verify them after each major update.
An app still shows location after revocation
Check both sides of the connection: revoke the Tesla permission and sign out, disconnect, or delete the vehicle from the third-party service. The service may retain information it collected before revocation, so use its privacy or deletion request process for historical data.
You need proof of what Tesla stores
Submit a Data Privacy Request through the account’s Security & Privacy controls. A data copy is more reliable than trying to infer account records from the vehicle’s current switches.

What these settings can and cannot accomplish
- They can: reduce optional Tesla data sharing, keep cabin-camera analytics off unless you opt in, and remove unnecessary third-party permissions.
- They cannot: stop local location use for navigation, guarantee that no data leaves the car during a serious safety event, or control a third party’s handling of data it already received.
- They do not automatically: delete account records, erase third-party copies, or remove files stored on a Dashcam or Sentry storage device.
Tesla’s Customer Privacy Notice is marked “Updated February 2026.” Because privacy language and menu labels can change, use the current text shown in your vehicle and account when making a final decision.
