Yes. Tesla vehicles have built-in cellular connectivity and can connect to Wi-Fi, but the features available online depend on the vehicle, hardware, region, connectivity package, network coverage, and any required third-party subscriptions. You do not need Premium Connectivity for every internet feature: Wi-Fi can provide access to some features that otherwise use the car’s cellular connection.
How a Tesla connects to the internet
Teslas can use two connection routes: the vehicle’s built-in cellular connection or a nearby Wi-Fi network. Cellular data depends on cell-tower coverage; Wi-Fi requires the car to be within range of a router or hotspot. Tesla says local telecommunications companies provide the cellular network, so signal quality and coverage depend on the network and location—not on Tesla providing universal service. Tesla’s connectivity support page explains that cellular works much like a smartphone connection.
Built-in cellular
The car’s cellular connection enables certain features without connecting to a nearby Wi-Fi network. Which features work over cellular depends in part on whether the vehicle has Standard or Premium Connectivity, as well as its hardware and local coverage.

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is useful when the vehicle is near a home or other router. Tesla’s Wi-Fi instructions say a vehicle can reconnect automatically when a saved network is in range. For Model 3 specifically, Tesla’s owner manual recommends Wi-Fi for stable software and map update downloads, especially where cellular service is limited. Model 3 owner manual

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Standard vs. Premium Connectivity
Standard Connectivity and Premium Connectivity are packages for accessing Tesla’s connected features, not two different kinds of internet infrastructure. Premium adds cellular access to some features that may otherwise be available over Wi-Fi; it does not guarantee coverage everywhere.
| Connectivity | What Tesla says it provides | Term or price |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Connectivity | Access to standard connectivity features; some may require Wi-Fi. | Included at no additional cost for eight years from original delivery as new or first in-service date, whichever comes first. Vehicle and ownership-history exceptions apply. |
| Premium Connectivity | Access to connectivity features over cellular in addition to Wi-Fi. Features can vary by hardware configuration. | Tesla’s US support page lists $9.99 monthly or $99 annually, plus applicable tax. Availability and eligibility vary; check current local terms. |
Tesla’s Standard Connectivity term is not necessarily the remaining term on a used car. Certified pre-owned buyers are directed to check how much time remains, and ownership history can affect eligibility. Check the vehicle screen or Tesla app for the specific car’s status. Premium can be purchased through the touchscreen or Tesla app when the vehicle is eligible. Current Tesla Connectivity terms

Yes. A phone hotspot is a Wi-Fi network, so you can connect to it through the vehicle’s Wi-Fi settings. Tesla says some features available with Standard Connectivity over Wi-Fi—including the browser and video streaming—may also work through a mobile hotspot. Your carrier may charge for data or impose restrictions. A hotspot is an option for certain Wi-Fi-dependent features, not a substitute for cellular service in every use case.

Which features use an internet connection?
Tesla lists features such as live traffic visualization, satellite-view maps, streaming music and media, video streaming, and the internet browser. Access depends on the connectivity package and vehicle hardware. Streaming music and media over cellular requires Premium Connectivity, and the streaming service may also require its own paid subscription.

Software and map updates
Tesla says all vehicles have access to over-the-air software updates and that important safety updates continue over the vehicle’s cellular connection. That does not mean every update downloads immediately or regardless of signal. For Model 3, the owner manual recommends Wi-Fi for stable, reliable software and map update downloads.

What to check when connected features do not work
If a Premium feature is unavailable or the connection is unreliable, Tesla recommends checking these items:
- Confirm Premium Connectivity is active if the feature requires it.
- Check whether the feature requires a separate subscription from a third-party service.
- Install current vehicle software.
- Check cellular signal strength or confirm the vehicle is connected to Wi-Fi.
- For weak cellular service, try restarting the touchscreen or moving to a location with stronger signal.
- If the problem continues, request service through the Tesla app.
For the vehicle-specific feature list and current package status, check the touchscreen, Tesla app, and Tesla support information for your region.
