Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised), Ford BlueCruise, and GM Super Cruise all assist a driver; none makes the vehicle autonomous or removes the driver’s responsibility. The main difference is where and how each is designed to operate: Tesla describes destination-oriented driving across a broader range of road situations, while BlueCruise and Super Cruise are hands-free systems limited to eligible highways or mapped compatible roads. That distinction describes their intended operating domains—not which system is safer or better overall.

What is the difference between Tesla FSD, BlueCruise, and Super Cruise?

The names can make these systems sound more alike—or more capable—than they are. A useful comparison starts with each system’s stated operating domain, the vehicle and software requirements, and what the driver must continue doing.

System What the manufacturer describes Where it is intended to operate What the driver must do
Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Destination-oriented driving that can follow roads, negotiate intersections and roundabouts, make turns, and enter or exit highways. Availability and behavior depend on region, vehicle configuration, manufacture date, hardware, and software. Road markings, camera visibility, weather, and map currency also matter. Remain attentive, monitor the drive, and be ready to intervene. Tesla says the feature does not make a Model 3 fully autonomous or replace the driver.
Ford BlueCruise Hands-free driving added to adaptive cruise control, with features that vary by software version. Ford lists capabilities such as in-lane repositioning and lane-change assistance on supported versions. Prequalified highway sections called Blue Zones; vehicle eligibility and feature set vary by model, year, and configuration. Continue attending to the road and remain responsible for driving, even when the system permits hands-free operation.
GM Super Cruise Hands-free driver assistance on GM-mapped compatible roads. Chevrolet’s current support page says the network includes more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads. Mapped compatible roads and eligible vehicle/road combinations. Stay attentive and ready to take control. Chevrolet says Super Cruise cannot steer around objects and is not a crash-avoidance system.

The practical distinction is breadth versus boundaries. Tesla describes a feature that attempts to navigate toward a destination and handle a range of maneuvers. Ford and GM describe hands-free assistance within specified highway networks. A wider task description does not establish that a system works in every place or circumstance, and a hands-free highway feature is not permission to stop supervising.

What does “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” actually mean?

“Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” is Tesla’s feature name, not a statement that a vehicle can drive itself without a responsible person. Tesla’s Model 3 owner manual says: “None of these features make Model 3 fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.” The manual describes the feature as attempting to navigate to a destination by following roads, negotiating intersections and roundabouts, making turns, and entering or exiting highways.

The word “attempting” matters. A system’s intended task is not a guarantee that it will handle each road, maneuver, or situation correctly. Tesla’s manual says driver attention is required and describes cabin-camera attentiveness monitoring and escalating warnings. It gives narrow roads, construction zones, and complex intersections as situations where the driver may need to intervene; it also cautions that the vehicle’s behavior at intersections may appear inconsistent.

That range of described maneuvers is the reason FSD (Supervised) can seem fundamentally different from a highway-only system. It does not change the human role. A driver must watch what the vehicle is doing, recognize when conditions are beyond its capabilities, and be prepared to take control—not wait for the vehicle to make every decision correctly.

How do BlueCruise and Super Cruise differ from Tesla’s system?

Ford BlueCruise: hands-free operation in Blue Zones

Ford describes BlueCruise as hands-free driving on prequalified highway sections called Blue Zones, adding hands-free capability to adaptive cruise control. This defined operating boundary is central to understanding the feature: a route may include supported and unsupported segments, so a vehicle’s eligibility alone does not mean BlueCruise is available on every road.

Ford also identifies version-specific capabilities, including in-lane repositioning, lane-change assistance, and automatic lane change on supported newer versions. Those features are not a universal promise across every BlueCruise-equipped vehicle. Ford says capabilities differ by software version and eligible vehicle; model year and configuration also affect availability. Before buying or relying on a particular maneuver, verify the vehicle’s actual software version and equipment rather than inferring its features from the BlueCruise name.

GM Super Cruise: hands-free operation on mapped roads

Chevrolet describes Super Cruise as hands-free assistance on GM-mapped compatible roads. Its current support page reports more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads. That is GM’s stated network figure, not an independent measurement of how much of a particular driver’s route is supported, how often the system can be used, or how safely it performs.

Super Cruise’s boundaries matter when the road presents an obstacle or unusual condition. Chevrolet says the system cannot steer around objects and is not a crash-avoidance system. The driver therefore cannot treat hands-free operation as a guarantee that the vehicle will route around something in its path or resolve a problem without supervision. The manufacturer’s central instruction is to remain attentive and ready to take control at any time.

Tesla FSD (Supervised): a broader described task, with variable availability

Tesla’s description includes destination-oriented navigation and maneuvers beyond highway lane keeping. But the available feature and its behavior can vary with region, manufacture date, configuration, hardware, and software. Camera visibility, road markings, weather, and map currency also affect whether the feature can operate as expected. It is not sound to assume that a feature described for one Model 3, location, or software state will behave identically in another.

In short, BlueCruise and Super Cruise make their mapped or prequalified-road limits prominent; Tesla describes a wider set of driving tasks, but its own manual still calls for supervision and warns that intervention may be necessary. These are different operating approaches, not proof of a performance ranking.

Are these systems autonomous or self-driving?

No. The systems discussed here require an attentive human driver. Tesla says FSD (Supervised) does not make Model 3 fully autonomous. Chevrolet says Super Cruise cannot replace the driver’s responsibility to remain attentive and ready to take control. Ford describes BlueCruise as hands-free on Blue Zones, not as a system that eliminates driver responsibility.

NHTSA’s Level 2 description provides a useful way to understand this role: the system provides continuous assistance with both steering and acceleration/braking while the driver remains fully engaged and attentive. NHTSA says the driver remains responsible for driving. This is a description of the driver-assistance category; it should not be mistaken for a certification of a particular manufacturer’s marketing language or a finding that every system performs identically.

NHTSA has also explained that it avoids the term “self-driving” for higher automation because the term can describe a vehicle’s state without telling drivers what the system can actually do, and may falsely suggest how much interaction is required. In practice, the safer question is not whether a product name includes “self-driving” or “hands-free,” but what it can do on the present road and what the person behind the wheel must keep doing.

What happens when a road or situation exceeds a system’s limits?

These systems should be treated as assistance that can require human judgment, not as a substitute for it. The specific limitations differ, so the relevant warning signs differ too.

  • With Tesla FSD (Supervised): Tesla identifies narrow roads, construction zones, complex intersections, poor camera visibility, road markings, weather, and map currency as factors that matter. The manual describes escalating attentiveness warnings and cautions that intersection behavior may appear inconsistent.
  • With BlueCruise: Check whether the road is a prequalified Blue Zone and whether the vehicle’s software version supports the feature you expect. Ford’s stated capabilities vary by version and eligible vehicle.
  • With Super Cruise: Confirm that the road is mapped and compatible. Chevrolet says the system cannot steer around objects, so the driver must be ready to respond when an obstacle or other condition requires action.

The common response is to keep monitoring and be ready to take over promptly. A warning, a change in road conditions, or a maneuver the system handles unexpectedly is not an invitation to wait passively for the car to recover. The manufacturer’s instructions for the specific vehicle and current software should govern how to disengage or resume control; the available source descriptions do not establish a single universal takeover procedure across all models.

Which system is best for your driving?

There is no defensible overall winner from the available manufacturer descriptions and regulator guidance. They do not provide matched, current tests of Tesla FSD (Supervised), BlueCruise, and Super Cruise for safety, reliability, or real-world performance. A feature list or a road-network figure cannot substitute for that comparison. Instead, choose based on whether the system’s permitted roads and capabilities fit the routes you actually drive—and whether you are comfortable continuing to supervise it.

Start with your regular routes

If most of your driving is on highways, check whether the roads you use are included in BlueCruise’s Blue Zones or Super Cruise’s compatible mapped network. Do not rely on a national coverage statement alone: compare the actual roads and trips that matter to you. If you want destination-oriented assistance across a broader range of maneuvers, Tesla describes that kind of task, but availability still depends on vehicle, region, hardware, and software, and the driver must remain attentive.

Check the exact vehicle and software

Eligibility is not a minor footnote. For Ford, verify model year, configuration, software version, and the capabilities that apply to that combination. For Tesla, verify region, manufacture date, configuration, hardware, and software. For GM, verify that the specific vehicle and the roads you use are eligible for Super Cruise. A system name on a vehicle listing does not establish that every advertised or anticipated feature is enabled in that vehicle.

Decide whether the supervision requirements suit you

Hands-free operation changes what the driver may do with their hands under supported conditions; it does not remove the need to pay attention. Tesla describes cabin-camera attentiveness monitoring and escalating warnings. NHTSA’s Level 2 framework emphasizes that the driver remains fully engaged and responsible. Think about whether you are willing and able to monitor the road continuously and intervene when needed. If a system’s supervision requirement is incompatible with how you intend to use it, it is not a good fit, regardless of its feature list.

Compare the evidence, not just the claims

Manufacturer manuals and support pages are useful for current stated capabilities, cautions, and eligibility. They are not independent head-to-head performance tests. NHTSA’s November 5, 2024 preliminary evaluation document discusses Tesla FSD (Supervised) communications and examples the agency considered inconsistent with supervision cautions, while also noting Tesla disclaimers. It is an investigative document describing concerns and evidence—not a final defect determination, nor a controlled comparison with Ford or GM systems.

When assessing a safety claim, distinguish a manufacturer’s description of features from a regulator’s investigation and from a matched test. The available sources do not establish a common safety rate, reliability score, or comparative ranking for these three current systems. Avoid treating the number of supported roads, hands-free capability, or a destination-navigation description as a proxy for safety.

What should you verify before buying or using one?

  • Road eligibility: Identify the actual highways or roads where you expect to use the feature, including whether a route crosses between supported and unsupported areas.
  • Vehicle eligibility: Confirm the exact model, model year, trim or configuration, installed hardware, and region rather than relying on a system name alone.
  • Software version: Ask which version is installed and which version-specific features are available on that vehicle, especially for BlueCruise.
  • Driver monitoring: Read how the vehicle expects you to remain attentive, how it warns you, and what response is required. Tesla’s manual describes cabin-camera monitoring and escalating warnings; the driver remains responsible with every system here.
  • Road and weather conditions: Consider camera visibility, markings, construction, complex intersections, and weather for Tesla; confirm mapped-road compatibility for Super Cruise and Blue Zone availability for BlueCruise.
  • Limits and recovery: Understand what the manufacturer says the system cannot do, including Super Cruise’s stated inability to steer around objects, and know how your particular vehicle prompts you to take control.
  • Evidence behind claims: Separate official feature descriptions from independent comparative tests or regulator findings. A current comparative safety result is not established by the sources cited here.

Because mapped networks, eligible vehicles, and software features can change, check the manufacturer’s current documentation for the exact vehicle and location before relying on old coverage figures or descriptions. Chevrolet’s more-than-600,000-mile claim is on its current support page; the page did not state a publication date, so it is best read as GM’s current claim, not a dated independent measurement.

Why no system can be ranked as the safest here

A fair head-to-head ranking would require comparable vehicles, routes, operating conditions, software versions, and outcome measures. The official descriptions available for these systems explain capabilities and limitations, while NHTSA supplies a driver-responsibility framework and an investigative document about Tesla. They do not provide a matched current comparison of safety, reliability, or performance across Tesla, Ford, and GM.

That evidence gap is important because the systems are not described as doing exactly the same job on exactly the same roads. One may be available on a particular highway while another is not; a version-specific lane-change feature may differ; and weather, road markings, camera visibility, or obstacles can change what is possible. Without common test conditions and a shared measure, a claim that one is “best” or “safest” would go beyond what these sources establish.
