Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT give the driver very different jobs. Tesla’s system can attempt a wider range of routes, including city streets, but the driver must watch the road and be ready to take over at all times. DRIVE PILOT is a conditional Level 3 system: in a narrow set of approved conditions, it can let the driver do certain secondary activities, while requiring them to respond to a takeover request.
How the driver’s role differs
The key distinction is not the product names; it is when the driver must supervise the driving task.

NHTSA’s distinction between Level 2 and Level 3 helps explain the difference. For Level 2, the driver remains fully engaged and attentive while the system assists with steering and speed. What roads and maneuvers they cover
Tesla: broader route types, continuous supervision
The current Model 3 manual describes Full Self-Driving (Supervised) as attempting to follow a destination route across residential and city streets as well as highways. It may follow road curves, negotiate intersections, make turns, navigate roundabouts, and enter or exit highways. This is broader in route type than Tesla’s separate features intended for multi-lane roads with clear lane markings; it does not remove the driver’s obligation to supervise.

Tesla lists situations in which intervention may be needed, including narrow roads with oncoming traffic, construction zones, complex intersections, interactions with pedestrians or cyclists, unprotected turns across fast traffic, multi-lane turns, simultaneous lane changes, high-speed merges, road debris, and sharp curves. Its Model S manual also warns that low light, poor weather, rain, snow, direct sunlight, and fog can degrade performance and that the vehicle may make unexpected maneuvers. Mercedes: limited freeway use in qualifying traffic
In the United States, Mercedes-Benz says DRIVE PILOT can be activated at 40 mph or less in heavy traffic on a predefined freeway network approved by Mercedes-Benz. The company’s page identifies the S-Class and EQS Sedan and says approved areas include major freeways in California and parts of Nevada. When Mercedes DRIVE PILOT can be used in the U.S.
The vehicle must determine that the applicable conditions are satisfied. Mercedes-Benz lists requirements including:
- Driving on its predefined, approved freeway network.
- Moderate-to-heavy traffic at 40 mph or less.
- Clear lane markings and clear weather.
- Daytime lighting.
- The driver is visible to the monitoring camera.
- No construction zone.
If conditions cease to qualify or the system requests a handover, the driver must resume control. The Level 3 label does not mean the driver can leave the driving seat or ignore an alert; NHTSA describes Level 3 drivers as needing to be available to take over when asked.

Geography and vehicle availability matter
These descriptions are not universal guarantees for every vehicle or market. Tesla says equipment and behavior can vary by region, production date, configuration, options, hardware, and software. The cited detailed feature description is from the Model 3 Owner’s Manual, which lists software version 2026.32 on its current manual index; check the manual and controls for the specific car.
Mercedes-Benz says DRIVE PILOT availability depends on approved geography and qualifying conditions and may change. Its U.S. product page identifies the S-Class and EQS Sedan and approved areas in California and parts of Nevada; this does not establish current inventory or eligibility for every model year. Mercedes-Benz’s June 2023 announcement records California certification, Nevada compliance confirmation in January 2023, and planned U.S. availability for model-year 2024 S-Class and EQS Sedan, with initial deliveries expected in late 2023. Germany has a separate operating approval. Mercedes-Benz announced in December 2024 that DRIVE PILOT was approved there for Autobahn operation up to 95 km/h under qualifying conditions, with sales release planned for early 2025. Can you take your eyes off the road?
With Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised), no: Tesla requires the driver to remain attentive and ready to take over at all times. With Mercedes DRIVE PILOT, certain secondary activities may be allowed while the system is active, but only within its approved operating conditions and while the driver remains ready to respond to a takeover request. The precise activities and system availability are governed by the vehicle and its instructions, not by the Level 3 label alone.

Which system is the better fit?
- For route variety: Tesla’s described feature attempts residential and city-street routes as well as highway driving, but it requires continuous driver attention.
- For conditional hands-off-the-driving-task use: DRIVE PILOT offers a different role for the driver, but only on its approved freeway network and when traffic, speed, weather, lighting, visibility, and other conditions qualify.
- For either system: The automation label or feature name is not a substitute for checking the owner’s manual, local availability, and current vehicle-specific instructions.
The available official material does not establish a verified current side-by-side purchase price or subscription comparison. No independent head-to-head safety or performance statistic is established here, so neither system should be presented as proven safer based on these descriptions alone.
