A “Tesla backup battery” usually means Tesla Powerwall, a rechargeable home battery that stores electricity from solar panels or the grid for later use. During an outage, the battery can power selected home circuits—or, with a suitable design, support whole-home backup—but the complete installation, not the battery alone, determines what stays on and for how long.
What is a Tesla backup battery?
Tesla calls its home battery product Powerwall. Tesla describes it as “a rechargeable home battery system that stores energy from solar or from the grid and makes it available on demand” (Tesla Powerwall). It can store solar electricity for later use or charge from the grid, depending on the system setup.

Powerwall is not a portable generator, and a battery by itself is not a complete outage-backup installation. The battery stores energy; the rest of the installed system determines how the home is connected to that stored power.

How does Powerwall work during a power outage?
In a backup installation, Powerwall works with grid-management equipment such as a Backup Gateway or Backup Switch. This equipment detects an outage and isolates the home from the grid so the home can draw power from the battery. The precise components depend on the Powerwall model and installation (Tesla’s Powerwall overview; Backup Gateway information).
#1 Best Overall
- One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
- Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
- Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
- Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
- Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.
That separation matters: the system must prevent the home from sending power into the grid while utility workers may be repairing it. The Gateway also manages the connection to the grid and supports outage detection and backup operation. Its specifications are model- and region-specific, so check the documentation for the equipment proposed for your installation.
What can a Tesla Powerwall run?
Tesla describes installations that can provide either partial-home or whole-home backup. Depending on the design, supported loads may include 120-volt lights, outlets, and small appliances, as well as 240-volt equipment such as air conditioners, ranges, well pumps, EV charging, dryers, water heaters, and pool pumps (Tesla’s backup-load guidance).
This list is not a promise that one Powerwall configuration can operate every listed appliance at once. The installer needs to account for the number of batteries, the circuits selected for backup, and the power demand of the equipment. A partial-home setup prioritizes chosen circuits; a whole-home design aims to back up the home more broadly but still depends on system capacity and household use.

How long will a Tesla Powerwall last in an outage?
There is no reliable universal runtime in hours. Tesla says backup capability and duration depend on the number of batteries and the home’s appliances and energy use (Tesla’s backup-load guidance; energy-management information). A home that limits high-demand equipment and uses less electricity can draw on stored energy differently from one running several large loads.
Ask for a home-specific estimate based on the circuits you want backed up and the expected use of those loads. A battery’s nominal energy capacity alone does not tell you how many hours your household will have power.
Which Powerwall model fits the installation?
Tesla’s owner-document library lists Powerwall 3, Powerwall+, and Powerwall 2. Tesla describes Powerwall 3 and Powerwall+ as designed for new solar-and-storage installations, while Powerwall 2 is designed to be added to existing solar systems and is compatible with major inverter brands (Tesla owner documents; Tesla Powerwall support information). Model availability and configuration vary by location, so verify the options and compatibility for your region and existing equipment.

For Powerwall 3 specifically, Tesla’s specification page lists 13.5 kWh nominal battery energy, up to 15.4 kW AC output at 64 A and 240 V, and a 10-year warranty (Tesla Powerwall specifications). These are manufacturer specifications for Powerwall 3, not a runtime calculation, and should not be applied to Powerwall 2, Powerwall+, another region, or a different system configuration without checking its documentation.
For a practical comparison, focus on whether you are adding storage to existing solar or installing a new solar-and-storage system, the model and inverter arrangement, whole-home versus partial-home backup, the number of batteries, and the loads you need to support. A site assessment can also account for regional equipment requirements and utility approval.

System design depends on the solar system, Powerwall model, and number of batteries. Tesla says its site assessment uses home energy use to determine a proposed system size, and recommends installation by Tesla or a Tesla Certified Installer (Tesla’s installation preparation guide). The installation needs suitable electrical connections; Tesla also says an active internet connection is needed for app monitoring in its preparation guidance.
Price, savings, incentives, payback, local code requirements, compatibility with a particular home, and exact outage runtime cannot be inferred from a general product description. Those depend on current regional terms, utility rules, and the details of the home and proposed system.
