If Tesla assisted driving becomes unavailable or disengages, take control of steering and drive manually first. Then use the exact alert on the screen to identify the likely cause: blocked camera visibility, incomplete calibration, conditions the system cannot handle, or a driver-attention or vehicle-state restriction. Feature names and instructions vary by model, configuration, region, and software, so follow the alert and your vehicle’s manual.
What to do when assisted driving disengages
Steer and drive manually as soon as the system disengages; do not troubleshoot while relying on it. Tesla says an alert and chime may accompany a disengagement. Its Model S Owner’s Manual, in the “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” section, states: “If this happens, take control of steering immediately.” Tesla’s Model Y Owner’s Manual puts the responsibility plainly: “It is your responsibility to stay alert, drive safely, and be in control of the vehicle at all times.”
If the alert directs you to stop or seek immediate inspection, follow it rather than continuing to drive. Otherwise, note the exact wording. “Autosteer temporarily unavailable,” a reduced-camera-visibility message, a calibration prompt, and an attention warning point to different checks.

Match the alert to the likely cause
| Alert or circumstance | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Camera visibility is reduced or assisted driving is temporarily unavailable | Dirt, debris, weather, glare, low light, condensation, or surroundings that make lane or road features difficult to see | When safely stopped, inspect the camera areas identified in your vehicle’s manual and the windshield for visible obstruction. For condensation, use the climate and defroster directions below. |
| “Continue driving to allow cameras to calibrate” | Camera calibration is incomplete, including after initial setup or certain service work | Check the touchscreen’s calibration progress indicator and allow calibration to proceed under suitable road conditions. |
| Attention prompts or FSD (Supervised) unavailable | Driver-attention or vehicle-state requirement is not met | Check the relevant seat belt, driver presence, doors, trunks, charge connection, and vehicle mode. Respond promptly to attention prompts. |
| Feature remains unavailable despite clear cameras or completed calibration | A persistent issue that may require service | Follow the alert and contact Tesla Service if the vehicle manual directs you to do so. |
The table reflects guidance in Tesla’s cited Model S and Model Y manuals; it is not a universal diagnosis for every Tesla or software version.

Camera visibility: check for obstruction and conditions
Tesla lists dirt or debris, rain, fog, snow, dew, bright sunlight or glare, low light, and condensation as factors that can limit camera visibility. A visually monotonous setting—such as tunnel walls or highway dividers—can also make it harder for the system to interpret its surroundings. Depending on the vehicle and conditions, some or all driver-assistance features may become temporarily unavailable.
When safely stopped, check the indicated camera surfaces and windshield for dirt, debris, ice, snow, mist, residue, or wiper streaks. Use the camera locations and cleaning instructions in your own vehicle’s manual; camera placement differs by model. Keep camera surfaces clean and unobstructed, but do not disassemble a camera enclosure.
If the alert points to condensation
For the condensation alert described in Tesla’s Model S manual, precondition the cabin with the temperature set to High and A/C on, then turn on the front windshield defroster. The manual also suggests directing the front air vents toward the door pillars to help dry condensation. Tesla says condensation inside the camera enclosure cannot be wiped clean, so do not try to wipe the inside of the enclosure.

Camera calibration: allow progress, then use the manual’s threshold
If the screen says to continue driving so cameras can calibrate, the affected features remain unavailable until calibration completes. Tesla’s cited Model S Owner’s Manual says calibration typically takes 20–25 miles (32–40 km), but the actual distance varies with road and environmental conditions. The touchscreen displays calibration progress; a straight road with clearly visible lane markings can help.
In that Model S manual, Tesla advises contacting or scheduling service if calibration has not completed after 100 miles (160 km), or if the relevant features remain unavailable despite successful calibration. Those figures are model-manual guidance, not a guarantee or universal threshold for every Tesla. Do not clear or reset calibration unless the manual for your vehicle or Tesla Service tells you to.
Road and environmental conditions can interrupt assistance
Some alerts reflect conditions the system cannot reliably handle rather than a fault that cleaning or resetting will fix. Tesla lists poor visibility, sharp curves, significant elevation changes, unclear road signs, tunnels, highway dividers, and bright light among factors that can affect operation. It also warns that its limitations list is not exhaustive and that Traffic-Aware Cruise Control can cancel unexpectedly.

When visibility or the road layout improves, the feature may become available again, but do not assume it will. Stay in control and follow the vehicle’s alerts. For more detail, consult Tesla’s Model Y Owner’s Manual guidance on assisted-driving limitations.
FSD (Supervised): check attention and vehicle-state requirements
For the Model S FSD (Supervised) instructions cited here, activation may be blocked if the vehicle does not detect a suitable driver, the driver’s seat belt is unbuckled, a door, trunk, or frunk is open, a charge cable is connected, or the vehicle is in a mode that restricts the feature. Check these basics if the alert indicates FSD is unavailable.
The same manual says FSD (Supervised) can disengage if the vehicle is shifted out of Drive, a door or trunk is opened, the seat belt is released, Automatic Emergency Braking activates, repeated attention prompts are ignored, or the feature itself becomes unavailable. Take control immediately if disengagement occurs.

The cabin camera monitors driver attentiveness. Ignoring prompts can escalate warnings and disable the feature for the rest of the drive. Tesla’s cited Model S manual describes suspension for one week after five strikeouts and forgiveness of a strikeout after 3.5 days without another. These are specific rules in that manual, not a general rule for all Tesla models or software versions.
A safe troubleshooting sequence
- Take control. If assistance disengages, steer and drive manually. Follow any instruction to stop or seek inspection.
- Read the complete alert. Identify whether it refers to camera visibility, calibration, attention, vehicle state, or another condition. Preserve the exact wording when contacting Tesla Service.
- Inspect only when safely stopped. Check the camera areas and windshield identified in your vehicle’s manual for visible obstruction, using that manual’s cleaning directions.
- Use the specified condensation steps. If the alert concerns condensation, follow the vehicle-specific climate and defroster instructions; do not wipe inside a camera enclosure.
- Check calibration progress. If the alert asks you to continue driving for calibration, monitor the touchscreen indicator and allow suitable driving conditions to support completion. Do not reset calibration without model-specific instructions or direction from Tesla Service.
- Check FSD prerequisites if applicable. Confirm driver presence, seat-belt use, closed doors and trunks, an unplugged charge cable, and a permitted vehicle mode where those requirements apply.
- Escalate persistent alerts. Contact Tesla Service when your manual’s service threshold is reached or the feature remains unavailable despite completed calibration and no visible obstruction.
Use the manual for your model and configuration
Tesla’s owner-manual guidance is specific to vehicle and feature. The camera-calibration distances and FSD (Supervised) strikeout rules above come from cited Model S instructions; the responsibility statement and limitations guidance cited here are from Model Y pages. Menus, terminology, camera locations, and system behavior can differ by model, trim, region, and software version. Search your vehicle’s manual using the exact alert text, and use Tesla Service for a persistent issue the manual does not resolve.
