A Tesla AI chip usually means custom in-vehicle silicon designed to run AI models for features such as Full Self-Driving (FSD). It is an inference processor: it runs a trained model in the car. Dojo and Cortex, by contrast, are training-compute systems used to process data and train neural networks.

What does “Tesla AI chip” mean?

The phrase most often refers to Tesla-designed inference chips for vehicles. Tesla says its FSD chip work is intended to run FSD software, with design efforts focused on improving silicon performance per watt. See Tesla’s AI description.

The chip is not the entire vehicle computer. Tesla describes the FSD computer as the assembly that connects custom silicon with the rest of the vehicle; its packaging and thermal design must account for the conditions inside a car. The distinction matters: a processor is one part of the system that runs the software.

How are vehicle chips different from Dojo and Cortex?

Vehicle inference and model training are different workloads. An in-car chip runs a trained model during vehicle operation. Training compute processes data and helps develop or update models; Tesla’s Dojo and Cortex projects belong to this broader training infrastructure, not to the category of in-car inference chips.

Term Role What it is not
AI5 and AI6 Planned generations of Tesla vehicle inference chips for AI workloads such as FSD. Not training systems; Tesla’s production dates are roadmap plans.
Dojo A custom supercomputer project for processing fleet video and training neural networks. Not the chip installed in a vehicle to run inference.
Cortex Part of Tesla’s training-compute infrastructure. Tesla’s Q1 2026 update said Cortex 2 was online and running training workloads. Not another name for the FSD computer or its in-car inference chip.

Tesla’s Q1 2026 update also said custom silicon development with Dojo 3 continued. Separately, its Q2 2026 update described semiconductor-fab work as an early-stage effort to build chipmaking capabilities for long-term logic- and memory-chip supply. These efforts relate to training infrastructure and supply capability, not a change in what “vehicle AI chip” means.

What are Tesla AI5 and AI6?

AI5 and AI6 are names for planned generations of Tesla inference chips. In its Q1 2026 update, Tesla said it had completed AI5’s final chip design in April. Its Q2 2026 update said production was planned for 2027 for AI5 and 2028 for AI6. These are company roadmap statements; they do not establish that either generation is currently in production.

Tesla’s AI5 targets

Tesla’s Q1 2026 investor update gave the following AI5 targets relative to AI4:

  • 10× raw compute.
  • 9× memory capacity.
  • 5× hardened block quantization and softmax.
  • A 50× total performance improvement target.

These are Tesla’s stated targets, not independently measured results. The 50× figure is the company’s aggregate target; it should not be calculated by multiplying the other listed figures together. The cited updates do not provide enough consistent, independently measured generation-by-generation benchmark data for a quantitative comparison of AI4, AI5, and AI6.

Does a Tesla AI chip make the car autonomous?

No. A chip can provide computing capacity for driver-assistance software, but its presence does not make a vehicle autonomous. Tesla states that currently enabled FSD features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous. See Tesla’s FSD page.

How to interpret claims about Tesla AI chips

When reading a claim about a Tesla chip, first identify the workload: vehicle inference or data-center training. Then check whether the statement concerns a design, a production plan, or hardware already deployed. For performance figures, distinguish company targets from measured benchmarks and look for the stated comparison basis, such as memory capacity or compute. Without consistent published measurements, a headline multiplier alone cannot establish real-world performance across generations.
