Short answer: The Official Terraria Wiki lists 500 MB of free RAM for a small world. It also says memory use changes with world size and player count. The searched official requirements do not specify a CPU model, core count or clock speed, so any precise CPU “minimum” would be guesswork. For a short session or a home network, Terraria’s Host & Play mode is the simplest choice. A dedicated server is better when the server process should run separately from a player’s game, while rented or cloud hosting is useful when the world needs to remain available without your home computer running.
This guide explains what those figures do—and do not—mean, how the hosting options differ, and how to handle the default port, player setting and common connection problems.
Terraria server requirements at a glance
| Item | What the official information establishes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| RAM | 500 MB of free RAM for a small world | An approximate reference for the stated small-world case, not a universal requirement. Usage varies with world size and number of players. |
| CPU | No CPU model, core count or clock speed is listed | Do not treat a guessed processor specification as an official minimum. Workload and player activity matter more than a single published model. |
| Operating-system components | The server page lists .NET Framework 4.0 and XNA Framework | These entries may reflect legacy platform guidance. Check the current game files and the operating system you plan to use. |
| Network port | TCP port 7777 by default | Home servers behind NAT generally need port forwarding for players outside the home. Cloud deployments should follow the wiki guidance to open TCP and UDP 7777, plus the provider’s firewall rules. |
| Player setting | 16 is the default maximum and can be changed | This is a configuration limit, not a guarantee that any hardware can serve 16 players smoothly. |
The official server page is the basis for the RAM, port and player-setting figures. Its numbers should be carried with their qualifications: they describe a small-world reference and defaults, not a sizing formula for every version, mod or multiplayer situation.

The 500 MB figure
For a small world, the Official Terraria Wiki lists 500 MB of free RAM. “Free” matters: the server needs memory available to it, not merely that amount installed in the computer. The operating system, the game client and other services consume memory as well, so the figure should not be read as a recommendation to build a machine with exactly 500 MB of physical RAM.
#1 Best Overall

Why the number changes
The same page explicitly says RAM depends on world size and the number of players. Larger worlds contain more data to load and maintain. More players create more simultaneous activity, including movement, dropped items, projectiles, enemies and world changes. Mods, plugins or other server-side additions can alter the footprint again. The published material does not provide an adjustment formula, a per-player multiplier or a separate figure for large worlds.
How to size a real machine without inventing a number
Use 500 MB as a baseline reference only. Start the server with the intended world and observe memory while the normal group is connected. Leave room for the operating system and any other software on the host. If memory pressure appears, close unrelated applications, check whether the world or player count is larger than the small-world case, and measure again before buying hardware. A single RAM purchase recommendation cannot be justified from the published requirement alone.
What CPU does a Terraria server require?
The searched official requirements do not name a processor, minimum core count or clock speed. That absence is important: it is more accurate to say “no official CPU minimum is stated” than to publish an arbitrary dual-core or gigahertz target.

CPU demand is affected by what is happening in the world, how many players are active and what additional software is running. A server that feels fine for a few people may behave differently during heavy combat or when several players explore and modify the world at once. If players report delayed actions while memory remains available, monitor processor utilization and the host’s overall workload rather than assuming the RAM figure explains the problem.
For a purchase decision, prioritize a machine that can run the operating system and server without sustained contention, then validate it with the actual world and group. The available requirements do not support a universal processor model or a guaranteed player-capacity claim.
Choose a hosting method
| Option | Best fit | What must stay running | Setup and maintenance | Remote access considerations | Control and cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Host & Play | In-home LAN or a short online co-op session | The host’s game session and computer | Lowest effort; use the game’s multiplayer hosting flow | LAN is straightforward; internet players may still depend on the host’s network and firewall | Uses the game’s normal world controls. No rental price is established by the cited material. |
| Home dedicated server | A separate, persistent process on a computer you control | The dedicated-server process and its machine | More setup; manage files, configuration, updates and backups | Port forwarding and firewall rules are usually needed behind home NAT | Maximum control over world and configuration files; electricity and hardware are your responsibility. |
| Rented or cloud machine | Availability without leaving a home gaming PC on | The rented instance and its server process | Provider setup is exchanged for account, operating-system and firewall administration | Open the required ports in both the host firewall and provider networking controls | Current prices, locations and support levels are not established by the official pages, so compare providers separately. |
Host & Play
The setup guide describes Host & Play as the simplest route for an in-home LAN or short online co-op session. It is appropriate when the host is playing at the same time and the group does not need an always-on world. When the host exits the session or shuts down the computer, players should not expect a separate server process to continue independently.

Dedicated server
A dedicated server runs separately from the game client. The wiki describes server software included with Windows installations and downloadable server files for Linux. This approach is useful when players should connect to a world without tying the server to one person’s active game session. It also requires more responsibility for updates, configuration, backups and network security.
Rented or cloud hosting
A hosted machine can remain online when nobody is using a home computer, but the official information does not establish provider plans, pricing, geographic locations or support quality. Treat those as separate purchasing questions. Confirm that the service permits the required server software, lets you manage the world files and exposes the necessary network ports. For a ready-made option, Godlike.Host’s Terraria server hosting offers a game panel with SFTP/FTP file access, up to three free backups a day with restore and 10 data-center locations; see the current plans.

- Launch Terraria on the computer that will host the session.
- Open the multiplayer area and choose the Host & Play option.
- Select an existing world or create one, then set a password if the session should be private.
- Invite the other players using the connection method offered by the current game version. For people on the same home network, the host’s LAN address may be used when the interface requests it.
- Keep the host game and computer running for as long as the group needs access.
For a home LAN, an Ethernet connection is optional but useful. The setup guide says “ethernet is almost always faster than wireless.” That is a networking suggestion for the host or players; it is not a Terraria server requirement.
Run a dedicated server
The exact executable name, package layout and prompts can change, so verify the files shipped with your current Terraria version. The following workflow reflects the documented model without assuming a stale command or path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Obtain the dedicated-server files supplied with the Windows installation or the current downloadable Linux server package.
- Place the files in a dedicated folder and make sure the account running the process can read and write the world and configuration files.
- Start the server directly for an interactive setup, or provide a configuration file if the current package supports that method.
- Choose the world, set the maximum players (16 is the documented default), choose a password if needed and retain the default port 7777 unless your network design requires another value.
- Allow the server through the host operating system’s firewall. On a home network, forward the selected port from the router to the server computer before inviting people from outside the LAN.
- Connect locally first. After that succeeds, test an external connection from a player who is not on the same home network.
- Record the world location and configuration, and stop the process cleanly before moving or backing up files.
The guide’s “start directly” and configuration-file approaches are useful patterns, but its own warning means you should compare every step with the current files and software rather than copying an old command verbatim.

Configure ports, firewalls and NAT
Default port
Terraria listens on TCP port 7777 by default. If you change the port in the server configuration, use the same value in the firewall rule, router forwarding rule and the address players enter.
Home network
A router performing network address translation (NAT) normally hides private home addresses from the internet. Players on the same LAN may connect locally, but players outside the home generally need a port-forwarding rule that sends the Terraria port to the server computer’s private address. The server computer’s operating-system firewall must also allow the traffic.
Cloud deployment
The wiki’s cloud guidance says to open port 7777 for both TCP and UDP. Apply that rule in the cloud firewall or security group as well as inside the virtual machine’s firewall, and follow the provider’s instructions for assigning a public address. Opening a port broadly exposes a service, so restrict source addresses where your hosting platform and group size make that practical.

Player limits are settings, not performance guarantees
The documented default maximum is 16 players, and the value can be changed at startup or in the server configuration file. Raising it only permits more connections; it does not establish that the CPU, RAM, network or world will perform well at that population. Because no hardware-to-player formula is supplied, increase the setting gradually and observe real sessions rather than treating 16 as a guaranteed capacity target.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- Players on the same LAN cannot connect: confirm the server is running, verify the local address and port, and check the host computer’s firewall. Test locally before changing router settings.
- LAN works but internet players cannot connect: verify that the router forwards TCP 7777 to the correct computer, that the public address is current and that the host firewall permits the connection. A second NAT device can require forwarding on both devices.
- A cloud server is unreachable: check the provider’s security group or firewall for TCP and UDP 7777, then check the operating-system firewall and the address assigned to the instance.
- The server closes or fails to start: recheck the world and configuration paths, permissions and the package version. Replace copied instructions from an old guide with the current server files’ own help or documentation.
- Gameplay becomes delayed: note the number of players, world size and activity at the time, then watch CPU, memory and network use. The 500 MB small-world reference does not diagnose every performance problem.
- A world seems to have disappeared: stop the server before moving files, confirm the configured world path and restore from a known backup rather than creating a new world over the original.
Permanent-server checklist
- Choose a world and keep its files in a known, backed-up location.
- Decide whether Host & Play is sufficient or whether a separate process must remain online.
- Verify available memory against the small-world 500 MB reference and leave capacity for the operating system.
- Do not purchase a CPU based on an invented specification; validate the machine with the intended workload.
- Set the player limit deliberately; remember that 16 is only the default setting.
- Keep the default TCP port 7777 unless there is a reason to change it, and keep every firewall and forwarding rule consistent.
- Use wired Ethernet where practical on a home LAN, while recognizing that wireless can still work.
- Recheck current server files and dependencies because the setup guide may be outdated.
- Test from the LAN and from an external network before sharing the address.
Which setup should you choose?
Use Host & Play when one person is already playing and the group needs a quick LAN or short online session. Use a home dedicated server when you want a separate process, direct control of world files and the ability to leave the game client closed. Choose rented or cloud hosting when continuous availability matters more than running the hardware yourself, after checking the provider’s current price, location, firewall controls and file access.
The defensible hardware starting point is the official small-world reference of 500 MB free RAM, with the explicit warning that larger worlds and more players need different amounts. There is no published CPU minimum to quote. Build the rest of the decision around uptime, network reachability and the level of control your group actually needs.
