The TerraMaster D8 Hybrid 2 puts four SATA drive bays and four M.2 2280 NVMe slots in one USB enclosure, so you can combine large hard drives with solid-state storage. Its 10Gbps USB connection is the main performance limit, however, and published specifications conflict with an independent review about hardware RAID. It is direct-attached storage, not a NAS: drives are sold separately, and the product has no network interface listed.
What the D8 Hybrid 2 is—and what it is not
This is a multi-drive USB storage enclosure. Connect it to a computer over USB and install your own drives; it does not provide network-attached storage functionality. The design’s draw is having HDD and SSD options in one enclosure rather than choosing only one drive type.
TerraMaster lists four SATA positions that accept 3.5-inch SATA HDDs, 2.5-inch SATA HDDs, and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, plus four M.2 2280 NVMe slots. The M.2 slots support PCIe 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 drives. The manufacturer lists support for NTFS, APFS, Mac OS, FAT32, EXT4, and exFAT; check that your computer and intended workflow can use the filesystem you choose. TerraMaster’s product specifications are the source for these hardware and format details.

How fast is it in practice?
The enclosure connects over USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C at 10Gbps. That shared connection is a ceiling on the data moving between the enclosure and computer, so an NVMe drive’s standalone speed rating does not describe the speed you should expect from it here. PCWorld specifically cautions that the USB interface limits NVMe performance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
TerraMaster lists maximums of 1,016MB/s read and 960MB/s write with four SSDs, and 980MB/s read and 880MB/s write with one M.2 SSD. It also lists up to 560MB/s read and 520MB/s write for one SATA SSD. These are manufacturer specifications for the stated configurations, not guaranteed results for every drive, host, or workload. See TerraMaster’s specifications.
In its September 28, 2026 review, PCWorld described CrystalDiskMark 8 sequential results as only slightly behind the TerraMaster D1 SSD and Teamgroup Expert P34F, with 4K performance also fast but not quite as fast. In 48GB transfer and 450GB write testing, it characterized the D8 Hybrid 2 as good rather than spectacular. The tested setup included NVMe drives as well as a SATA HDD and SATA SSD, but PCWorld did not test those SATA drives. The review offers comparative judgments, not exact scores to use as a promised transfer rate. Read PCWorld’s review.

Digital Camera World separately reports claims of up to 1,020MB/s read with one NVMe SSD and up to 980MB/s with four HDDs depending on RAID configuration. Those figures are reported claims in its July 2026 coverage, not the measured outcomes above. Read that coverage. Because configurations and sources differ, these figures should not be combined into one universal speed estimate.

There is an unresolved discrepancy. TerraMaster’s specification lists single disk, JBOD, RAID 0, and RAID 1, says array creation is limited to HDD1 and HDD2 while other drives operate in single mode, and marks hardware RAID as present. PCWorld’s review says the enclosure has no hardware RAID. The available information does not establish which description applies to the unit a buyer will receive or how the listed modes are implemented.

If RAID is central to your purchase, confirm the RAID mechanism and supported drive combinations in the current documentation for your unit before relying on it. Do not assume all eight drives can be combined into one array, or that the enclosure will provide hardware RAID, based on the product specification alone. Manufacturer specification; PCWorld review.
How much storage can it hold?
TerraMaster states a maximum raw capacity of 160TB, calculated as four 32TB SATA drives plus four 8TB M.2 drives. Digital Camera World gives a different maximum of 152TB in its July 2026 article. These are not equivalent to usable capacity: the actual total depends on compatible drive models and how storage is configured, and any array arrangement can affect available space. - Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Which drives should you choose?
Choose drives for the job rather than filling every slot automatically. Compatible 3.5-inch SATA HDDs are the natural option for bulk capacity; 2.5-inch SATA SSDs or M.2 NVMe SSDs provide solid-state storage. The enclosure itself does not include those drives, so calculate the full system cost using the drive count and types you actually need.
Drive support is model-specific. Before buying an M.2 SSD, check its exact model and capacity against TerraMaster’s current compatibility list; the list names recommended models, including entries for Samsung 980 and 990 PRO drives, but its contents can change. Do not buy a high-end NVMe drive solely for its standalone sequential rating: the shared 10Gbps USB link limits what the enclosure can deliver to the host.

What else should you know before buying?
TerraMaster’s listed physical specifications are 222 × 179 × 154mm and 1.9kg net weight, with a 120mm fan, 90W power supply, and two-year warranty. These are manufacturer-stated figures. Product specifications.
For a comparison with another enclosure, focus on connection bandwidth, drive types and bay count, RAID implementation, tested transfer behavior, supported drive capacity, drive compatibility, cooling and noise, and total cost after adding drives. The available PCWorld results are not a matched comparison against competing enclosures, so they do not establish that the D8 Hybrid 2 is faster or slower than a particular alternative.
