Terminal productivity comes from making frequent actions easier to repeat: finding a command you already ran, completing a path, narrowing a long list, or keeping remote work available after a disconnect. The ten habits below are optional and depend on your shell, terminal, and workflow; none guarantees a fixed amount of time saved.
1. Search command history before retyping
Shell history lets you recall commands from earlier in a session, often with reverse search. In Visual Studio Code’s integrated terminal, Run Recent Command searches commands from the current session, previous sessions, and common shell history. Its default shortcut is Ctrl+Alt+R, but accessibility-mode behavior can reverse the shortcuts. Treat it as a VS Code feature, not a universal terminal shortcut.
Use history to recover a command, then inspect it before running it—especially if it contains a destructive option, a path, or a command that changes system state.
2. Make completion and suggestions do the typing
Tab completion can fill in paths, filenames, and command names, but what it completes depends on the shell and its configuration. Some terminals and editors add suggestions beyond the shell’s own completion. VS Code terminal suggestions can be triggered manually and configured for automatic or trigger-character suggestions; see Microsoft’s terminal shell integration documentation.

When a key does not behave as expected, check the shell’s bindings and the terminal or editor’s settings. Similar-looking features may come from different layers, so a setting in one terminal application may not carry over to another.
3. Add a small number of transparent aliases
An alias gives a short name to a command or command pattern you use often. For example, in Bash or Zsh, alias ll='ls -lah' creates ll as a shortcut for a detailed listing. Alias syntax and configuration-file locations vary across shells; check the documentation for the shell you actually use before adding it.
Keep aliases easy to understand, and be cautious with ones that change command defaults or chain multiple commands. An empirical study analyzed more than 2.2 million shell alias definitions found on GitHub and classified aliases as shortcuts, modifications, or scripts; that corpus figure describes definitions in the study, not people or time saved. 4. Use fuzzy finding to narrow long lists
When you have a large list of files or commands, fuzzy finding can be easier than remembering an exact name. fzf is an optional, general-purpose text filter that interactively narrows input as you type. It is not built into every shell: installation and shell integration depend on your system and setup.
A fuzzy finder is useful when the list is long and you recognize the item when you see it. For a short list, a direct command or ordinary completion may be simpler.
5. Select files and history entries interactively
fzf can filter a file list or a stream of command history. Its README demonstrates examples such as:

fd --type f --strip-cwd-prefix | fzfand:
history | fzfThe first example uses fd to produce file paths before fzf presents them for selection. The exact commands available depend on what you have installed, and shell integration may offer additional ways to search history. Check the selected result before acting on it; selecting text does not by itself make a command safe to run.

6. Add previews only to file-oriented searches
fzf supports preview commands, including examples using cat and bat, so you can inspect a candidate while moving through results. A preview is helpful when the input consists of files, but fzf can also filter arbitrary text such as process lists or command history. Its documentation cautions against a global preview command that assumes every item is a file.
Configure a preview for the specific search where it makes sense rather than applying a file-reading command to every fzf input.

7. Group related programs with tmux windows and panes
tmux is a terminal multiplexer: it organizes programs into sessions, windows, and panes. Windows can keep separate tasks together, while panes divide a window into simultaneous views. The tmux guide documents navigation among windows and panes; which layout works best is a matter of preference, not a universal speed improvement.
Try grouping only programs you need to monitor together—for example, an editor and a running development server—rather than splitting the screen simply because the option exists.

A tmux session can remain available after you detach from it. The project describes this as useful on remote servers: if an SSH connection drops, programs running inside the session can continue, and you can reconnect and reattach later. Consult the tmux getting-started guide for the session workflow.

This protects against losing the connection, not against a host failure, a process being terminated, or other causes that stop the program. It is also not a substitute for saving work or keeping backups.
9. Return to recent directories with the feature your environment provides
If you frequently move between working folders, a recent-directory feature can spare you from reconstructing paths. VS Code documents Go to Recent Directory for its integrated terminal. That is an application-specific capability; other shells and terminal applications may offer different tools or none at all. Check the features available in your own environment rather than assuming the same command or shortcut works everywhere.
10. Tune one part of the workflow at a time
Start with the repeated action that causes the most friction, then add one change: perhaps an alias, a shell integration, a fuzzy finder, or a tmux workflow. Keep a record of the configuration change and how to remove it. If a new shortcut is confusing or conflicts with an existing binding, undoing one change is easier than untangling several at once.
For broader context on command-line utilities, the Debian Reference, Chapter 9 describes categories including recursive source-code search, fuzzy text finding, and terminal multiplexing. Those utilities are options, not prerequisites for being productive in a shell.
