Verdict: Tenebris Somnia is worth playing if you want a compact, story-led survival-horror game built around classic puzzles, occult themes and unusually well-integrated live-action video. Its six-to-eight-hour campaign is more compelling for its mythology, atmosphere and cinematics than for its stiff combat and occasionally awkward movement.
What Tenebris Somnia is
Tenebris Somnia is a 2D retro survival-horror adventure by Andrés Borghi and Saibot Studios, published by New Blood Interactive. Steam lists the Windows release for October 16, 2026. The game borrows the exploration, item management, puzzle solving and creature combat associated with classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill, then translates that structure into an 8-bit/16-bit-inspired 2D presentation.
Its defining idea is the contrast between pixel-art gameplay and live-action film. Key story moments switch to scenes shot with actors and practical effects by an award-winning Argentine film crew. These are not optional video clips: the sequences occur at pivotal points and, according to reviews, transition directly from play without breaking the mood.

You play Julia, whose recurring nightmares show the death of her former boyfriend, Ivan. She visits his apartment and finds it damaged and sealed with occult signs. Searching the rooms leads to a wider supernatural crisis and eventually to a hellish or parallel dimension.

The narrative focuses on possession, soul sacrifices, spiritual domains and an occult mythology that gives Julia and Ivan’s relationship emotional weight. Shacknews called the game a haunting occult story, while Saving Content highlighted its demonology and emotional stakes. The ordinary spaces use bold, natural colors; the otherworldly areas distort geometry and palettes to make the transition feel physically unsettling.
How the gameplay works
Exploration and puzzles
Most of the campaign is spent searching rooms, examining clues, collecting objects and combining items. Objectives are often multi-step, and solving one problem can require returning to an earlier area with a newly obtained tool. Environmental details help indicate where to look, but the design expects players to take notes and remember connections rather than follow a constant objective marker.

This makes the challenge closer to a classic adventure game than to a modern action-horror title. The structure rewards careful observation and inventory planning, especially when resources are limited.
Combat and movement
Combat is intentionally resource-constrained, but it is the least polished part of the package. Shacknews reports slow default movement, snags on level geometry, stationary attacks and weapon delays that make missed shots costly. Saving Content also describes awkward reload behavior and occasional one-hit deaths.

Attacks and reloads require commitment and timing, so the safest approach is to avoid unnecessary fights, create space before firing and treat ammunition as a puzzle resource. Players expecting the responsive movement of contemporary action games may find the deliberate pacing frustrating.
Live-action scenes
The FMV is the game’s central novelty. Saving Content praised the high-bitrate footage and smooth transitions into and out of gameplay, saying the practical-effects material feels cohesive rather than like a separate film. Because these scenes are concentrated around major story beats, exploration and combat can occupy long stretches between cinematic payoffs.

Length, endings and value
Reviewers report different first-playthrough times: Shacknews finished in approximately six hours, while Saving Content reached the credits in just over eight hours. A realistic expectation is therefore about six to eight hours, depending on puzzle-solving speed, deaths and backtracking. Saving Content also reports multiple endings, giving completion-focused players a reason to revisit the campaign.
Saving Content lists a $24.99 retail price in its 2026 review. That makes the short runtime easier to assess: the value rests on the quality of the atmosphere, puzzles and film sequences, not on dozens of hours of combat or side content.

Steam lists a Windows 10/11 release. Its current requirements specify the following minimum configuration:

Is it like Resident Evil or Silent Hill?
It shares Resident Evil‘s item use, constrained resources and backtracking, and Silent Hill‘s emphasis on psychological unease and occult horror. The difference is format: this is a 2D pixel-art adventure with live-action interludes instead of a fully 3D survival-horror presentation.

- Expect a six-to-eight-hour first run rather than a long open-ended adventure.
Shacknews reviewer Sam Chandler wrote that the game uses its retro style to tell “a haunting horror story dripping with the occult.” Saving Content’s review summary similarly praised the cinematics, puzzles and story while acknowledging clunky combat. Saving Content disclosed that its Steam review code was provided by the publisher, so that assessment should be read as a reviewer’s judgment rather than an independent performance test.
