Yes. You can usually block a phone number and unblock it later, but that does not necessarily make the block temporary: Apple’s and Google’s documented steps require you to remove the number from a blocked list yourself. Their instructions do not describe a general timer that automatically unblocks a number after a period you choose.
Will a blocked number unblock itself?
Not according to the Apple and Google instructions covered here. Blocking is reversible, but you should expect to unblock the number manually unless your phone or carrier explicitly offers a timed option. A carrier-specific exception is not the same as a scheduled block: Google Fi says blocking is temporarily turned off in some cases after an emergency call from the device, but this behavior is specific to Google Fi and is not a general timer.
Blocking can also depend on the app and communication channel. Check the phone app for calls and the messaging app for texts; a control in one may not cover every way someone can contact you.

How to block and unblock a number on an iPhone
Apple’s iPhone and iPad guidance covers blocking numbers, contacts, and email addresses through Apple communication apps, and removing a blocked contact to unblock it. Since menus can change between iOS releases, use Apple’s current instructions rather than relying on a route that may not match your device: Apple Support: Block phone numbers, contacts and email addresses on your iPhone or iPad.

Apple says a blocked person “won’t receive a notification that the call or message was blocked.” For Messages, Apple also documents unblocking a sender from the blocked-sender list. A group conversation cannot be blocked as a group; Apple describes leaving the conversation or muting its notifications as alternatives. See Apple’s Messages guidance.
How to block and unblock a number on Android
Phone calls with Phone by Google
In Phone by Google, you can block a number from call history and later remove it from Settings > Blocked numbers. Google notes that some steps require Android 6.0 or later. When a blocked number calls, Google says, “your phone declines the call automatically.” See Google Phone app Help: Block or unblock a phone number.

And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
- Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
- Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.
What if you want a block to last only for a set time?
The reviewed Apple and Google instructions describe manual unblocking, not a general option to set a duration. If you need a timed block, check whether your particular phone, messaging app, or carrier offers one; do not assume that a standard block will expire automatically.
Google Fi documents a carrier-side block that is temporarily turned off in some cases after an emergency call made from the device. That is a provider-specific behavior, not a user-selected expiry timer or a feature that can be assumed for other carriers. Details are in Google Fi Wireless Help: Block & unblock a phone number. For other network-level controls, check your carrier’s current support information.

Choose the control that matches what you want to stop
- A specific person’s calls: Block the number in your phone app and check how that app handles calls from blocked numbers.
- Texts from a sender: Use the messaging app’s blocking control as well; spam reporting is a separate choice in Google Messages.
- Private or unidentified callers: Look for the phone app’s unknown-caller control, keeping in mind that Google Phone’s “Unknown” setting targets private or unidentified callers rather than all unsaved numbers.
- A group message: On iPhone, Apple says a group conversation cannot be blocked as a group; leaving it or muting notifications are alternatives.
- A block that ends automatically: Verify that your particular device or carrier explicitly supports a timed option. A normal reversible block may remain in place until you remove it.
