An iPhone video can fail as a Telegram profile avatar at different points: Telegram may not show it in the picker, the upload may hang, or the uploaded profile may look still. The likely fix depends on which stage fails. Telegram documents square MPEG-4 avatar videos, recommends 800×800 pixels, and supports dimensions up to 1080×1080; Apple says iPhones can record in HEVC, while a compatible-format option uses H.264. Exporting a square H.264/MPEG-4 copy is a useful test—not proof that HEVC caused the problem or a guaranteed fix.
Why can’t Telegram see my iPhone videos?
If the video is missing from the profile-photo picker, the problem is happening before upload. Telegram’s issue tracker records an iOS case in which the picker showed photos but not videos; the report was marked fixed and referred to Telegram iOS 12.2.4. That establishes that a picker bug has occurred, not that it explains every current case. Telegram’s iOS issue report is tied to that specific incident.
- Check iOS Photos privacy settings and make sure Telegram can access the video. If access is limited to selected items, add the clip.
- Close and reopen Telegram, then check for an app update and try selecting the clip again.
- If other videos appear but this one does not, create a fresh export and check whether the exported copy is available in Photos.
These are practical checks, not guaranteed remedies for the historical picker bug. If the clip still does not appear after confirming access and updating the app, the selection problem is distinct from an upload that stalls.
Why won’t my Telegram video avatar upload?
If Telegram lets you select the clip but remains stuck uploading, the failure is at a different stage. A separate Telegram iOS issue documents an endless upload animation. In that thread, an admin suggested encoding or bitrate might be involved; the reporter later said a video around 2 MB worked. That is one user’s result, not an official file-size limit or universal workaround. The upload issue report does not establish a general duration or size cap.

Try a square H.264/MPEG-4 export
Telegram’s API documentation says animated profile pictures support square MPEG-4 videos up to 1080×1080 pixels and recommends 800×800. It also documents a start timestamp for selecting the still preview frame. Telegram’s profile-picture specification is the relevant technical guidance.
Apple documents HEVC/H.265 as an iPhone recording format and provides a Most Compatible camera setting for new recordings. Apple’s instructions say that with Camera > Formats > Most Compatible, “All new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H.264 format.” That changes future captures; it does not convert a video already in Photos. Apple also documents ways to export HEVC media in another format. Apple’s guide to HEIF and HEVC media explains both the capture setting and conversion options.

- Make a new export of the problem video in H.264/MPEG-4, rather than only changing the iPhone’s setting for future recording.
- Crop or export it as a square, ideally 800×800 pixels; keep the dimensions at or below Telegram’s documented 1080×1080 maximum.
- Try the exported copy as the avatar. If the original fails and the new copy works, the conversion is a useful diagnostic result for that file—not proof that Telegram rejects every HEVC clip.
The format test is based on Apple’s format guidance and Telegram’s documented avatar specification; it is not an official Telegram recipe or a guaranteed fix. Telegram’s issue report raises encoding or bitrate only as a possible factor in one incident. Neither the API page nor that report establishes a general maximum video duration or file size.

Why does my Telegram profile video look still?
Telegram’s avatar has a still preview frame as well as the animated video. Its API includes a video start timestamp to choose that preview. If the profile appears static, check whether the selected preview frame is representative and whether the video itself is animating when viewed as a profile video. A still or unhelpful preview does not by itself show that the entire clip failed to upload.

What if a GIF turns into a still image?
A Telegram Android issue report describes a GIF profile video becoming a static JPG in an older Android client. The report suggests sending the GIF to Saved Messages, then saving the resulting MP4 for upload. This is a limited example from Android, not evidence of current iPhone behavior or a current universal workaround. The Android issue report gives the specific context.
