When a Telegram feed appears stuck, first determine whether the problem is missing notifications, messages that fail to appear after a notification, or a chat that is stale only on one device. Open the same conversation in Telegram Web or Desktop. If the new message is visible there, the account copy is available and the affected phone or tablet has a local notification or database problem. If it is absent everywhere, investigate connectivity, account access, or a broader Telegram service problem rather than repeatedly clearing local storage.
Identify exactly what is failing
“Telegram is not updating” describes several different failures. The correct fix depends on which one you see, so test one known-active chat before changing settings.
The feed is stale, but no notification appears
Check whether the chat or group is muted, then check Telegram’s notification controls and the operating system’s permission for Telegram. A notification failure can make a feed seem inactive even when synchronization is working.
A notification arrives, but the message is missing
Open the chat from the notification, then check the same chat in Telegram Web or Desktop. If the message is visible on another Telegram client, the mobile client has received an event but failed to display or index the message locally. This is the case for which Telegram’s bug tracker documents a temporary Clear Local Database workaround.

One device is stale while every other client is current
This pattern points to the affected device. Do not log out immediately: less disruptive notification and storage fixes should be tried first.
Every client is missing the same message
When Web, Desktop, and mobile all show the same stale state, a local cache reset is unlikely to solve it. Record the time, check that you are signed in to the expected account, and escalate with useful diagnostics if the problem persists.
Use this fix order

Check Android notification and background delivery
Android can suppress Telegram independently of Telegram’s own settings. Work through these checks in order and send yourself a test message after each relevant change.

Set Telegram notification importance to High or greater
In Telegram’s Android notification controls, make sure notifications are enabled and the importance level is High or greater. A lower importance level can prevent the alert behavior you expect even though the account is receiving messages.
Unmute the conversation
Open the affected chat or group and verify that it is not muted. A global notification permission can be correct while an individual conversation remains silent.
Confirm Google Play Services
Telegram’s Android troubleshooting guidance calls for Google Play Services to be present and functioning. If the device does not provide Google Play Services, or they are disabled, push delivery may not behave as expected.

Remove battery restrictions
Battery-saving software can stop Telegram from running in the background. Whitelist Telegram in the battery-saving application, as Telegram’s FAQ recommends. This is separate from the Android notification permission: both must allow Telegram to operate.

Some Huawei and Xiaomi devices add their own protected-app or autostart controls. Add Telegram to the device’s allowed or protected apps and enable autostart where the vendor interface provides that option. Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer, so search the device settings for “autostart,” “protected apps,” or Telegram’s battery controls.
Retest without changing account state
After correcting Android settings, leave Telegram in the background and send a test message from another client. If the notification now arrives but the message still does not appear in the chat, stop changing notification settings and follow the local-database procedure instead.
Check iPhone and iPad notification settings
iOS has two permission layers: Telegram’s in-app notification controls and the iPhone’s system notification permission. Both must be enabled.
Enable alerts in Telegram
Open Telegram’s notification settings and ensure notifications are enabled for the relevant private chats, groups, or channels. Check the conversation itself for a mute setting.
Enable Telegram in iPhone Settings
In the iPhone’s Settings app, open Telegram’s notification controls and allow notifications. Verify that the alert presentation you want is enabled; a permission that allows only silent delivery can look like a missing notification.

Force-quit and relaunch Telegram
After correcting permissions, force-quit Telegram, relaunch it, and test with a new message. This refreshes the app’s notification registration without removing your account data.
Use Telegram’s alert-style reset sequence if offered
Telegram’s iOS guidance includes an alert-style reset sequence for notification problems. Follow the sequence shown by Telegram in its notification settings, then repeat the test. Do not use logout as a substitute for this reset.
Clear Telegram cache without deleting cloud chats
Clearing the cache is the safest storage step. It removes local copies used to save device space; it does not log you out and does not delete messages stored in Telegram’s cloud.

Telegram’s FAQ states: “You can go to Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage> Clear cache to free up space on your device without logging out.”
- Open Telegram and go to Settings.
- Choose Data and Storage.
- Open Storage Usage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Return to the affected chat and allow Telegram time to download the media or message content again.
Use this when Telegram is consuming excessive local storage or when a stale local copy is suspected. Because cloud messages remain available, clearing the cache is reversible in practice: media may be downloaded again as you open chats. It is not the same operation as clearing the local database.
Use Clear Local Database for the missing-message symptom
If notifications arrive but messages do not appear on a mobile device while the same messages are visible in Telegram Web or Desktop, Telegram’s official issue report lists Clear Local Database as a temporary workaround.

- Open Settings.
- Choose Data & Storage.
- Open Storage Usage.
- Select Clear Local Database.
- Reopen the affected chat and check whether the missing messages are indexed and displayed.
This operation is more disruptive than clearing cache because Telegram must rebuild local message data. Use it only after confirming the cross-client symptom and after ensuring the account can remain signed in. Do not interpret the need to rebuild local data as evidence that the cloud copy was deleted; the workaround targets the device’s local database.

Cloud chats
Telegram cloud chats synchronize across logged-in devices. A message in a normal private chat, group, or channel should be available on another logged-in client once it has reached Telegram’s cloud. That is why Web or Desktop is a useful comparison when one phone appears stale.
Secret Chats
Secret Chats are tied to the device on which they were created. They are not part of normal cloud synchronization, so a Secret Chat that is absent on another phone, tablet, Web session, or Desktop session is expected to be absent there. Do not clear storage or log out merely because a Secret Chat does not appear on another device.
Check the chat type before diagnosing a sync bug
Use the chat’s identity and history to determine whether it is a regular cloud conversation or a Secret Chat. Only compare a Secret Chat with the original device; compare cloud chats across logged-in clients.

Logging out can refresh a damaged session, but it has a specific cost: Telegram says cloud messages remain available, while Secret Chats and their messages are lost from the device that is logged out.

- Confirm that you can receive Telegram’s login code through the account’s available sign-in method.
- Identify any Secret Chats on that device and accept that they will be removed from it.
- Try notification corrections, cache clearing, and the local-database workaround first when the symptom matches those fixes.
After signing in again, cloud chats can synchronize from Telegram’s cloud. A re-login cannot restore Secret Chats that were removed from the logged-out device.

Diagnose by scope: one chat, one device, or every device
Only one chat or group is affected
Check that conversation’s mute state and notification controls first. If other chats update normally, a device-wide cache operation is less likely to be the appropriate first step.
All chats are quiet on one phone
Prioritize the operating system’s notification permission, Telegram’s notification settings, Android battery restrictions or vendor autostart controls, and the iOS alert settings described above. Then compare with Web or Desktop to separate delivery from display.
Messages are missing on mobile but visible on Web/Desktop
This is the clearest case for a local client problem. Preserve the session, try Clear Local Database from Storage Usage, and retest the specific chat.
Messages are missing on every client
A local reset on one phone cannot explain a failure reproduced everywhere. Note whether the issue affects one conversation or the entire account, record the time it began, and prepare a support report rather than repeatedly reinstalling or logging out.
Collect evidence before contacting support
Persistent sync and notification failures are easier to investigate when the report includes reproducible details. Telegram Support Force asks for logs that capture the problem and when the message was received.
- Telegram app version on the affected device.
- Device platform and operating-system version.
- The exact time a test message was sent and the time any notification appeared.
- Whether the message was visible in Telegram Web or Desktop.
- Whether the affected conversation is a cloud chat or a Secret Chat.
- The precise symptom: no alert, alert with missing message, stale feed, or failure across every client.
- The settings changes and storage operations already attempted.
- System or app logs that cover the failure, where the device makes them available.
Describe one reproducible sequence, such as “send a message from Desktop, receive a notification on the phone, open the chat, and observe that the message is absent.” Include the message-received time requested by support rather than only the time you filed the report.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing notification failure with synchronization failure: an absent alert does not prove that the message is absent from Telegram.
- Clearing the cache expecting a logout reset: cache clearing is a storage operation and intentionally keeps the session active.
- Using logout to fix a Secret Chat: logout removes that device’s Secret Chats and their messages.
- Treating a Secret Chat as a cloud-chat test: Secret Chats are device-specific by design.
- Changing many settings at once: make one change, send a test message, and record the result so you know which branch solved or failed.
- Ignoring vendor controls on Android: Huawei and Xiaomi background-management settings can override Telegram’s own permission.
A concise recovery checklist
- Classify the symptom: no alert, alert with missing message, or stale content everywhere.
- Compare the affected chat with Telegram Web or Desktop.
- Check whether the conversation is muted and whether it is a Secret Chat.
- On Android, set notification importance to High or greater, confirm Google Play Services, whitelist Telegram from battery saving, and review Huawei or Xiaomi autostart/protected-app controls.
- On iOS, enable notifications in Telegram and iPhone Settings, verify the chat is not muted, force-quit and relaunch, and follow Telegram’s alert-style reset sequence if needed.
- For storage cleanup, use Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage > Clear cache.
- For notifications that arrive while messages are absent on mobile but visible elsewhere, use Clear Local Database in the same Storage Usage area.
- Only consider logout after confirming sign-in access and accepting the loss of Secret Chats on that device.
- If the issue persists, send Telegram the app version, exact times, reproduction steps, and relevant logs.
