If Telegram Desktop will not open, first check that your computer meets Telegram’s published operating-system requirements and that you installed the app from an official source. For immediate access, use Telegram Web while you identify what is happening at launch. Telegram’s official pages do not offer one universal fix for every desktop launch failure, so the right next step depends on your operating system and the exact symptom.
Check whether your computer is supported
Telegram’s version-history page lists these minimums for current Telegram Desktop versions:
- Windows: Windows 7 or later.
- macOS: macOS 10.12 or later.
- Linux: 64-bit Linux.
These are the requirements Telegram lists on its version-history page; check that page for current details because supported systems can change. Telegram also lists legacy builds for older systems, but an older build is not a general repair: it may lack current features or security fixes.

If you installed Telegram from an unfamiliar download site, verify the source before trying another installer. Telegram’s official desktop page offers downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux, including a portable Windows version and Linux Flatpak and Snap options. Use the package intended for your platform.

Telegram’s applications directory lists its official desktop and web clients and identifies some other clients as unofficial. If you want Telegram’s own desktop app, choose a download linked by Telegram rather than treating an unofficial client as a recommended fix.
Use Telegram Web while diagnosing the desktop app
Telegram lists its browser client as an official option. Open the Telegram FAQ and follow its Telegram Web link to use Telegram in a browser while the installed app is unavailable. This provides temporary computer access; it does not repair the desktop installation.
Pin down what happens when you launch it
Before attempting a more specific fix, note the details that determine which troubleshooting steps apply:

- Are you using Windows, macOS, or Linux, and which version?
- Does clicking Telegram do nothing, show an error, open and immediately close, or leave it stuck on a loading screen?
- Did you install it from Telegram’s official site, an app store, or another source?
- Did the problem begin after an operating-system or Telegram update?
Telegram’s official download and support pages do not establish a single cause or launch-failure checklist for all desktop systems. Without the operating system and symptoms, it would be guesswork to blame a firewall, VPN, antivirus, cache, permissions setting, driver, or damaged profile—or to promise that reinstalling will fix it.

Telegram distinguishes stable and beta releases on its version-history page: stable releases are tested more, while beta versions receive updates sooner. If you are trying to get a non-launching app working, a beta build is not the default troubleshooting choice; use the official stable download for your platform unless you have a specific reason to test beta software.
Contact Telegram Support if the problem persists
Telegram’s FAQ directs users with other questions to Settings → Ask a question in the app and notes that support relies on volunteers. If Telegram Desktop will not launch, use another device where you are already logged in to reach that support route. Include your operating system and version, what happens when you start the app, where you installed it from, and when the issue began.
