Yes—Telegram says unlimited cloud storage is included for free, but each file is capped. Telegram’s FAQ lists a 2 GB per-file limit for free users and 4 GB with Premium. “Unlimited” describes Telegram’s cloud-storage policy, not a published total capacity or an independently verified guarantee of capacity or uptime.
What “unlimited” means on Telegram
Telegram’s Premium FAQ says unlimited cloud storage remains free. That means the policy does not specify a total storage quota for a user; it does not mean you can upload files of any size. Telegram’s FAQ lists these per-file ceilings:
| Account | Maximum file size | What the limit means |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 2 GB per file | Telegram says users can send an unlimited number of files up to this size. |
| Premium | 4 GB per file | The higher ceiling applies to each file; Telegram says unlimited cloud storage itself remains free. |
These are Telegram’s published limits, not results from an independent capacity test. Telegram’s official FAQ also cautions that its documentation may be outdated, so check the current FAQ if a specific upload limit is important to you: Telegram FAQ and Telegram Premium FAQ.

Telegram Cloud Chats and their messages and media are stored on Telegram’s servers so they can sync across devices. Telegram says the cloud holds messages, photos, videos, and documents in encrypted form for access without third-party backups. In practice, cloud access means a file can be available when you sign in on another device; it does not mean the copy is downloaded permanently to every device.

Telegram describes Cloud Chat data as heavily encrypted and says the associated encryption keys are stored in other data centers in different jurisdictions. This is Telegram’s description of its own system, not an independent security audit. The service’s published material does not establish a total storage-capacity figure, an uptime percentage, or a real-world capacity test.
Cloud Chats and Secret Chats are not the same
| Chat type | Storage and encryption | Device availability |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Chats | Stored on Telegram’s servers in encrypted form, according to Telegram. | Sync across the user’s devices. |
| Secret Chats | Use end-to-end encryption with a key known to the participants; Telegram says these chats are not stored on its servers. | Available only on the devices involved in the chat, rather than synced to a user’s other devices. |
Secret Chats trade cross-device convenience for their device-specific, end-to-end-encrypted design. Telegram’s Privacy Policy explains how it distinguishes cloud data from Secret Chats.

Does clearing Telegram’s cache delete cloud files?
No. Clearing the app’s local cache removes cached copies from that device to reclaim local storage; it is not the same as deleting Telegram’s cloud data or exporting an independent backup. Telegram says you can clear the cache without logging out using this path:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Telegram and go to Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage.
- Choose the cache-clearing option shown in the app and confirm.
Menu wording can vary by app version. Cloud messages and media remain available through Telegram’s cloud unless you delete them; cached media may need to be downloaded again when you open it.

Can you keep a separate copy of your Telegram data?
Telegram says its app can export Telegram data and chats. Its FAQ does not specify every export category, retention behavior, or a complete step-by-step workflow, so use the export controls in your current app and inspect the resulting files before treating the export as a complete archive. See the Telegram FAQ for its export note.
If you want an offline copy, an external drive can be a destination for exported files. It is optional: it does not expand Telegram’s cloud storage and is not required to use Telegram. Keep a separate copy if losing access to an account or cloud service would put important files at risk.

Is Telegram Premium required for cloud storage?
No. Telegram says cloud storage remains unlimited and free. Premium is relevant to the higher per-file upload ceiling—4 GB rather than 2 GB—and to other Premium features. Telegram’s 2022 launch announcement said free users could download 4 GB files uploaded by Premium subscribers; that does not change the free account’s own 2 GB upload ceiling. The announcement is available at Telegram’s Premium launch post.
Telegram lists the App Store, Google Play, and @PremiumBot as purchase routes, with the bot available in some direct Android, Desktop, and macOS app versions. Availability and price depend on region and purchase channel; Telegram’s pages do not establish a single current price for every user. See the Premium FAQ for the purchase information Telegram publishes.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Bottom line: who should rely on Telegram storage?
Telegram’s free cloud storage is useful for syncing chats and files between devices, especially when individual files fit within the 2 GB free limit. Choose Premium only if its 4 GB per-file ceiling or other paid features matter to you. For important files, do not treat the word “unlimited” as a substitute for a separate archive: Telegram publishes no total-capacity or uptime guarantee in the cited material, and a local cache is not a backup.
