Apple has recently moved far less in step with technology stocks, but it has not become a permanent hedge. Bloomberg measured Apple’s 40-day correlation with the Nasdaq-100 at about 0.2 in February 2026, down from about 0.9 in May. That dated shift shows investors were treating Apple differently from the market’s artificial-intelligence leaders during an AI-driven repricing—not that Apple always rises when other technology shares fall.
What changed between Apple and the technology benchmark?
Correlation measures how closely two assets move over a specified period. A reading of 1 means they moved together, while a reading near 0 means little short-term co-movement. Bloomberg’s February 2026 observation therefore marked a substantial change in Apple’s relationship with the Nasdaq-100: its 40-day correlation was about 0.2, compared with about 0.9 in May. The measurement is a rolling snapshot, so it can rise or fall as prices, earnings expectations and investor positioning change.
Bloomberg described the pattern on February 18 as a period when “most Big Tech stocks zig, Apple’s shares zag.” That wording captures a market rotation, not a law of stock behavior. Apple can still decline with the broader technology sector if economic, regulatory or company-specific risks overwhelm the factors supporting it.

Investors were separating the AI trade from the rest of technology
Artificial-intelligence enthusiasm made semiconductor suppliers, data-center businesses and companies tied to rapid capital spending especially sensitive to changes in growth expectations. Nasdaq Global Indexes reported that expected 2026 semiconductor earnings-per-share growth had been revised to nearly 89% year over year, up from 55% at the start of 2026. Such revisions can drive large moves in AI-linked shares when investors reassess whether projected demand and spending can be sustained.

When that trade is repriced, investors may reduce exposure to the most crowded or valuation-sensitive beneficiaries without selling every large technology company equally. Apple’s business is not built primarily on semiconductor or data-center spending, so its share price can respond to a different set of earnings assumptions.
Apple has company-specific operating momentum
Apple’s fiscal third quarter of 2026, reported July 30, provided a fundamental reason for investors to value the company independently of the AI cycle. Revenue was $109.4 billion, up 16% year over year; gross margin was 50.1%; and diluted earnings per share were $2.02, up 29% year over year. Apple said iPhone, Mac and Services each reached a June-quarter revenue record.

Chief Executive Tim Cook called it Apple’s “strongest June quarter ever,” citing double-digit revenue growth across iPhone, Mac and Services and in every geographic segment. Those results do not guarantee future outperformance, but they can support a different market narrative from one focused on AI infrastructure growth.

Large companies have an outsized effect on benchmark returns. Capital Group reported that the S&P 500’s 10 largest companies represented 36.5% of the index’s market capitalization on March 31, 2026, versus a 22.6% long-term average. When leadership rotates among those companies, an index can look stable or strong even while individual constituents diverge sharply. The same concentration can make Apple’s different behavior appear especially significant because it is itself a major index holding.
Is Apple an “anti-AI” or defensive technology stock?
“Anti-AI” was Bloomberg’s framing for the February repricing, meaning Apple was being used as a way to express less exposure to the AI trade within large-cap technology. It should not be read as evidence that Apple rejects artificial intelligence or cannot benefit from it. Nor does the label make Apple a defensive stock in the same sense as a low-volatility or non-cyclical asset.
Apple remains a consumer-hardware and services company exposed to device demand, foreign exchange, supply chains, competition and regulatory decisions. Its installed base, recurring services revenue and product ecosystem can give its earnings profile a different balance from a semiconductor or data-center supplier, but those characteristics do not remove equity-market risk.

How to compare Apple with AI-led technology stocks
Investors choosing between Apple and an AI-heavy technology basket should compare both market behavior and operating evidence. A single correlation reading is not enough to establish diversification.

| Latest cited operating results | Fiscal Q3 2026 revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16%; 50.1% gross margin; diluted EPS of $2.02, up 29%. | Not stated as a single group; company filings are required for a like-for-like comparison. |
| Revenue evidence | iPhone, Mac and Services each set June-quarter records, according to Apple. | Often more sensitive to semiconductor demand, data-center investment and AI-related capital spending; results differ by issuer. |
| AI sensitivity | Indirect relative to chip and data-center specialists; evaluate any AI monetization using company disclosures rather than a label. | Typically more direct exposure to AI infrastructure, chips, cloud capacity or related spending, but the degree varies. |
| Portfolio role | May diversify an AI-heavy allocation during a particular regime; the February reading is not a guaranteed hedge. | Can provide greater participation if AI earnings and valuations continue to expand, with corresponding concentration and repricing risk. |
Measure the return relationship over several windows
Calculate rolling correlations against the Nasdaq-100 or the technology basket you actually own, using more than one window such as 20, 40 and 120 trading days. Also check beta, maximum drawdown and the number of days both holdings fell together. A low correlation over one 40-day period can disappear when the market regime changes.
Best Value
Check operating results, not just price charts
Compare revenue growth, diluted EPS growth, gross margin and cash generation from each company’s filings. For Apple, the cited quarter supplies a clear baseline. For an AI leader, identify how much revenue depends on data-center customers, semiconductor cycles or accelerated capital expenditure, then test whether the valuation assumes the published growth expectations.
Separate diversification from a hedge
Diversification means two holdings have not moved identically over a measured period. A hedge is a position designed and sized to offset a defined risk. Apple’s February 2026 behavior supports the first description for that period; it does not establish the second.

A market recap dated October 15, 2026 described an AI-led technology selloff broadening into a repricing of growth risk, with capital moving toward safer assets and defensive sectors. That context reinforces why correlations should be monitored rather than treated as fixed. If investors begin selling technology broadly, Apple may eventually move with the group even if it initially resists an AI-specific decline.
The concentrated market also raises the stakes of leadership changes. With the 10 largest S&P 500 companies accounting for more than a third of index value in March, a shift in how investors price a handful of giants can affect passive portfolios, headline indexes and perceived market direction at the same time.
A practical decision checklist for investors
- Define the exposure you already have. Identify how much of your portfolio is tied to the Nasdaq-100, semiconductor companies, cloud infrastructure or other AI-sensitive themes.
- Choose a comparison benchmark. Use the index or basket that matches your actual risk, not a generic technology index.
- Review multiple risk measures. Examine rolling correlation, beta, drawdowns and joint down days over several lookback periods.
- Read the latest filings. Compare revenue, EPS, margins, cash flow, segment performance and management guidance.
- Stress-test the narrative. Ask what happens if AI capital spending slows, consumer-device demand weakens, or investors de-rate expensive growth stocks.
- Set a rebalancing rule. Decide in advance how much concentration or drawdown you will tolerate; do not infer safety from one favorable correlation chart.
Bottom line
Apple’s low 40-day correlation with the Nasdaq-100 in February 2026 was a meaningful sign that the market was distinguishing its installed-base, hardware and services economics from the AI trade. Strong fiscal Q3 results gave that distinction fundamental support. But the relationship is time-dependent: Apple is not automatically an anti-AI stock, a defensive asset or a guaranteed portfolio hedge. Investors should treat the divergence as a condition to measure, then compare valuation, earnings exposure and drawdown risk before changing an allocation.
