Whether you can get missing Microsoft Teams history back depends on what happened. A hidden one-on-one chat can be found and unhidden. If you removed that chat’s history, Microsoft says you can no longer access it, including through search. Messages deleted by an organization’s retention policy cannot be recovered in Teams, although an administrator may be able to find a separately retained compliance copy. Start by identifying which case applies before troubleshooting.
Identify what disappeared

Restore a hidden one-on-one chat
- In Teams, search for the person’s name.
- Open the matching result. If Teams identifies the conversation as hidden, open More options and choose Unhide.
Microsoft’s guidance also describes showing hidden chat history after unhiding the conversation. The wording and available controls can vary with the Teams experience you use. See Microsoft’s guidance on hiding, removing, and leaving chats.
If you removed the chat history or left a group chat
For a one-on-one chat, choosing Remove chat history affects your access: Microsoft says you can no longer access that conversation, including through search, while the other person still sees it. This is different from hiding a chat, which you can reverse.

Check retention or administrator deletion in a work or school account
Retention-policy deletion
Organizations set their own Teams retention policies, so the retention period and affected locations depend on your organization. If a notice mentions a retention policy, or older messages have disappeared, give your IT administrator the approximate date, participants, and chat or channel name so they can check which policy applied. Microsoft Support states: “Messages deleted by a retention policy can’t be recovered.” Microsoft’s retention-policy message guidance explains the notices users may see.
Administrator-deleted messages and compliance copies
If Teams displays a notice that an administrator deleted a message, ask your organization’s IT or compliance administrator what happened. Microsoft documents separate user-facing and compliance copies of Teams data. When an applicable retention policy or hold preserves a compliance copy, an authorized administrator may be able to find it using eDiscovery. That does not restore the message to your Teams chat, and availability depends on your organization’s policies, licensing, permissions, and holds. Recover a deleted channel or find an archived team
Deleted channel
A team owner can restore a deleted channel within 21 days of its deletion, according to Microsoft’s channel-deletion guidance. Ask the owner to check the team’s deleted channels promptly; this window applies to deleted channels, not individual chat histories.
Archived team
An archived team is read-only and searchable, and its owner can restore it from Archived Teams. Ask the team owner to check the archived list if the whole team has vanished from your usual view. See Microsoft’s archive and restore instructions.

Personal-use Teams: deleted chats and exports
For Teams for personal use, a deleted chat is removed from your devices and is not searchable. Microsoft notes that if someone adds you again to an ongoing group or meeting chat you deleted, the full history becomes visible again. You can also request an export of personal chat data, but the export is a downloaded copy—not a control for putting a deleted conversation back into Teams. Make sure you are signed in to the intended personal account or work/school organization. Microsoft notes that some chat features may differ in personal-use conversations involving organization accounts; see its explanation of unavailable personal-chat features.

Safe troubleshooting steps
- Confirm the account and organization you intended to use.
- Search for a person or a distinctive term to check whether a one-on-one chat is hidden; use More options > Unhide if offered.
- If it was a group or meeting chat, check whether you left and ask a participant whether they can add you back.
- If you see a retention or admin-deletion notice, contact your organization’s IT or compliance administrator with the approximate date, participants, and chat or channel name.
- If a channel is missing, ask a team owner to check deleted channels and the 21-day restore period. If a whole team is missing, ask the owner to check Archived Teams.
- Do not clear the Teams cache as a first-line fix. Microsoft says cache clearing does not resolve missing messages or chat history that will not load, and it removes diagnostic logs that can help identify the cause. See Microsoft’s cache-clearing guidance.
