TCS dividends and bank deposits are different kinds of income: a dividend is a variable distribution from shares whose market price can rise or fall, while a term deposit pays interest under the bank’s stated terms for a set period. To compare them fairly, use the same starting amount and time horizon, account for tax, and assess liquidity and risk—not just the headline cash payment.
What TCS has paid—and what the figures mean
TCS’s official dividend page lists ₹110 per share for FY 2025–26: three interim dividends of ₹11 each, a ₹46 special dividend, and a ₹31 final dividend. The final dividend is listed with a payment date of 12 June 2026. Because ₹46 of the total was explicitly special, ₹110 should not be treated as a recurring annual income rate. For context, TCS reported ₹126 per share for FY 2025, including a ₹66 special dividend. That history illustrates how a special distribution can materially change an annual total; it does not establish what the company will pay in a future year. TCS’s investor FAQs provide the historical figure.

The same dividend page lists a ₹12 interim dividend for FY 2026–27 Q1, with a record date of 15 July 2026 and payment date of 31 July 2026. One interim payment is not a basis for projecting a full-year total.

A dividend per share is not a yield
Dividend per share is a cash amount, not a percentage return. To estimate a dividend yield, divide an explicitly stated annual dividend assumption by the share price on a specified date. The share price changes, and future dividends are not fixed by past payments. An investor’s total return also depends on the change in the share price, not only on dividends received.
No dated share price is used here, so this comparison does not give a live TCS yield. Avoid comparing ₹110 per share directly with a deposit rate: the figures use different units and the ₹110 includes a special dividend.

How a bank term deposit pays and what can change
The Reserve Bank of India defines a term deposit as money accepted for a fixed period and generally withdrawable after that period. The interest outcome depends on the specific bank, deposit product, customer category, tenor, and payment or compounding terms. RBI’s deposit notification sets out the regulatory framework.
Early withdrawal can change the interest paid. RBI guidance says the applicable interest may be based on the amount and period the money was actually deposited rather than the contracted maturity rate; the bank’s disclosed policy governs any penalty, and no interest may be payable if the deposit is withdrawn before the prescribed minimum period. There is no bank-specific rate in this comparison. Deposit rates vary, so a meaningful rate comparison requires a dated rate card and the relevant tenor and customer category. A generic rate—or a claim that one option pays more—would not establish what a particular depositor can earn.
Compare the two using the same amount and period
- Set the starting amount and horizon. Use the same investment amount and a clearly defined period for both options. A deposit’s stated maturity and a shareholding period may not line up automatically.
- Use the actual deposit terms. Record the bank, product, customer category, tenor, interest rate, and whether interest is paid out or compounded and reinvested. Include early-exit terms if access before maturity matters.
- State a TCS dividend assumption. Use a clearly labeled estimate rather than treating a past payment—especially a special dividend—as a forecast. For a yield calculation, state the date and share price used.
- Separate cash income from total return. Count deposit interest or TCS dividends as cash flows. For shares, also account for the ending share price; it can increase or decrease the value of the holding.
- Compare after-tax results for the investor. Apply the tax treatment relevant to the person and applicable tax year to both income streams. Do not treat tax withheld at source as necessarily equal to the final tax liability.
Without a dated TCS share price, a specified bank rate and tenor, and consistent assumptions about tax and share-price movement, there is no reliable single figure for which option “pays more.”

Compare risks, access to money, and income reliability

RBI’s rules and FAQs explain deposit terms and early withdrawal, but the applicable protection depends on current regulatory arrangements. This comparison does not state an insurance limit. For shares, the central distinction is that an investor bears market-price risk as well as uncertainty about future dividends.
Include tax without treating withholding as the final bill
TCS says dividend income is taxable in shareholders’ hands and describes TDS rules in its investor FAQs. TDS is withholding; it should not be read as the investor’s final tax rate or total liability. Tax rules and reporting requirements depend on the applicable year and the investor’s circumstances.

A complete after-tax comparison for every investor type is not established by the figures here. Use the tax treatment that applies to your situation for both dividend income and deposit interest; seek qualified tax advice if you need an individual calculation.
Which option fits the need?
A term deposit may suit someone prioritizing a defined tenor and interest terms, provided the bank and product conditions—including early-exit rules—fit the need. TCS shares may suit an investor willing to accept market-price movements and uncertain future dividends in pursuit of equity returns. Neither past TCS dividends nor a deposit’s stated interest alone answers which is appropriate: the decision turns on the investor’s horizon, liquidity needs, tax position, and tolerance for risk.
