The TCL TAC-12CPB/NZ is a cooling-only, single-duct portable air conditioner rated at 3.6 kW. It also offers fan and dehumidifier modes, and TCL lists a washable filter, three fan speeds and a remote control. The available evidence establishes its specifications and included parts, but not independent hands-on or laboratory performance. Its 33.2 kg net weight makes “portable” a matter of wheeling it between places, not carrying it lightly.
What kind of air conditioner is the TAC-12CPB/NZ?
This is a portable, cooling-only unit with a single exhaust duct. It has three operating modes—air conditioning, fan and dehumidifier—so it can circulate air or remove moisture without being set to cooling. It does not provide heating; if you need one appliance for both heating and cooling, compare it with a reverse-cycle model.
TCL’s specification sheet gives a cooling capacity of 3.6 kW. The Australian Government’s energy-rating register also lists 3.60 kW for this model; the displayed record is marked available on 16 November 2025. The model number’s NZ suffix does not by itself establish that every Australian warranty or service term applies in New Zealand.
Will it cool your room?
An Australian retailer lists the TAC-12CPB/NZ as suitable for rooms up to 30 m². Treat that as retailer guidance, not a guaranteed coverage limit: no sizing method or room conditions are stated. Actual suitability depends on factors such as insulation, sun exposure, ceiling height, heat sources and how well the exhaust window is sealed. A 3.6 kW rating is useful for like-for-like comparisons, but it cannot settle room fit by itself.

How noisy is it?
TCL lists sound-pressure levels of 48 dB(A) on low, 49 dB(A) on medium and 51 dB(A) on high. The sheet also gives a high-speed sound-power rating of 63 dB(A). These are different measures; sound power should not be read as the sound-pressure level at a particular listening position. The published figures do not establish how loud the unit will seem in a specific room or under particular operating conditions.
There is limited user feedback. BuyWisely reproduces one comment originally posted on National Product Review on 25 February 2023: “Easy to install and easy to use. Great for a small room Cool up the room instantly.The only downside about this product is it is pretty noisy. The eco mode and vertical fan mode doe not work on this model”. This is one anecdote, not a verified performance test or a representative consensus; it cannot confirm the listed noise levels or the disputed mode behavior.

Does it need a window hose?
Yes. As a single-duct portable air conditioner, it needs to exhaust hot air outdoors through a window or another suitable opening. TCL’s listed package includes the exhaust hose, hose inlet and hose outlet, plus a window slider kit and remote control. Check that the supplied slider can be fitted to your window before buying; the specification sheet does not establish compatibility with every window style. If sourcing replacement parts, verify the exact model fit rather than assuming a generic hose or kit will work.

Other listed functions include motorized up/down air swing, turbo, sleep mode, a 24-hour timer, self-diagnosis, auto restart, an LED display and a child lock on the remote. TCL describes the filter as washable. The manufacturer’s Australian portable air-conditioner range provides product-range context, but country-specific warranty and service arrangements should be checked with the seller.
What should you check before buying?
- Room conditions: Use the retailer’s 30 m² figure as a guide, not a promise, and consider heat load and window sealing.
- Window arrangement: Confirm the included slider kit suits your opening and that you can route the exhaust outdoors.
- Moving and storage: At 33.2 kg net, the unit is substantial; check the route between storage and the room where it will operate.
- Noise expectations: Compare the published sound-pressure ratings with other units, while recognizing that they do not predict every room’s listening experience.
- Local terms: Confirm warranty coverage, service availability and any country-specific conditions with the seller, particularly in New Zealand.
Verdict: is the TCL TAC-12CPB/NZ any good?
On paper, it is a straightforward 3.6 kW portable cooler with fan and dehumidifier modes, a supplied exhaust setup and a useful set of timer and airflow features. The main trade-offs evident from the specifications are its single-duct design, 33.2 kg weight and listed sound-pressure range of 48–51 dB(A). The available evidence is not enough to rate its real-world cooling speed, efficiency in a specific room or noise in everyday use. It is most defensible as a candidate to compare against other cooling-only portables using capacity, exhaust configuration, sound ratings, dimensions, included window hardware and local warranty on equivalent terms.
