If you want a large, full-color tablet with a less reflective, paper-like surface, the Lenovo Idea Tab Plus is the closest documented alternative to the TCL TAB A1 NXTPAPER: it has a 12.1-inch 2.5K IPS panel, paper-like anti-glare treatment and a 90Hz refresh rate. If your priority is reading and handwriting rather than color video or demanding apps, the BOOX Go 10.3 uses a 10.3-inch, 300-ppi monochrome ePaper screen and includes a pen. These products are not interchangeable: Lenovo is a conventional color LCD tablet, while BOOX is an e-paper Android reader and notebook.

The TCL model itself needs careful regional checking. TCL’s US page lists an 11-inch 2.1K, 90Hz display, T-Pen 2 support and a flip case in the box, but similarly named TAB A1, TAB A1 Plus and NXTPAPER 11 Plus products can have different specifications and bundles.

What “paper-like display” means on a tablet

“Paper-like” is a description, not a universal display standard. Two tablets can use the phrase while producing very different images and motion.

Color LCD with an anti-glare surface

The Lenovo Idea Tab Plus uses an IPS LCD panel with a paper-like anti-glare surface. It still behaves like a normal tablet: it produces color, uses a backlight, refreshes at up to 90Hz and is intended for video, web pages, games and ordinary Android applications. The surface treatment can reduce the mirror-like reflections that make a glossy screen distracting, but it does not turn the panel into e-paper.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Monochrome ePaper

The BOOX Go 10.3 uses Carta 1200 ePaper. Its 2480 × 1860 display has 300 pixels per inch and forms a monochrome image that resembles printed ink more closely than an LCD does. It is designed around reading and handwriting. Pages and supported apps can refresh differently from an LCD, and color media is not its strength.

Manufacturer claims are not comfort measurements

TCL describes NXTPAPER as offering “paper-like clarity that makes viewing for hours easy,” a statement from TCL North America rather than an independent eye-strain study. The cited manufacturer pages do not provide a controlled comparison of eye comfort, reading fatigue, writing feel or real-world speed. Treat the technologies and specifications as documented characteristics, not proof that one device is medically easier on your eyes.

The table compares manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests. Brightness, battery life, storage, weight, speakers and prices are not established consistently for all three products, so they should not be inferred from the display descriptions.

Lenovo Idea Tab Plus: the closest color alternative

Display and outdoor readability

Lenovo’s specification reference lists a 12.1-inch IPS panel at 2560 × 1600, a 90Hz refresh rate and a paper-like anti-glare surface. It lists 600 nits typical brightness and an 800-nit high-brightness mode. Those figures describe the panel modes in Lenovo’s specification reference; they are not a guarantee that every regional configuration will behave identically in every application.

The larger 12.1-inch canvas gives documents, split-screen work and handwritten pages more room than an 11-inch tablet. The 16:10-style 2560 × 1600 resolution is also better suited to widescreen video than a square-ish ePaper reader, while still providing enough vertical space for a page view.

What it can do that ePaper cannot

Because it is an IPS tablet, the Idea Tab Plus is the better match for readers who expect full-color photographs, streaming video, animated web pages, video calls or games. A 90Hz mode can make scrolling and interface animation appear smoother than on a typical ePaper device. Android app behavior is that of a conventional tablet, although the cited specification does not establish a particular software version or application performance level.

Pen support and regional bundles

Lenovo lists pen options, with a note that availability can vary by country or region. Do not assume a stylus is included simply because the tablet supports one. Check the exact local SKU, the “in the box” list and the seller’s part number before ordering. If handwriting is central to your purchase, price the compatible pen separately when the local bundle omits it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-offs

  • The anti-glare surface reduces the glossy-screen effect but remains a backlit LCD, not reflective ePaper.
  • LCD blacks, reflections and viewing comfort can vary with room lighting and viewing angle; the cited materials contain no head-to-head comfort test.
  • Pen availability is regional, so a configuration that includes a stylus in one market may not include it elsewhere.

BOOX Go 10.3: the ePaper choice for reading and handwriting

Screen characteristics

The original Go 10.3 has a 10.3-inch Carta 1200 ePaper panel at 2480 × 1860 and 300 ppi. Text and line art are rendered in monochrome. That makes it a fundamentally different choice from the Lenovo and TCL color LCD tablets: a colorful magazine, video thumbnail or web illustration will not appear as it does on an LCD.

  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

The ePaper screen is most persuasive when the content is primarily text, a PDF, a book page or a handwritten note. Refresh behavior is also different. E-paper devices use refresh modes suited to static pages and writing rather than an LCD-style 90Hz mode, so animated interfaces and fast scrolling may show more visible redraw artifacts.

Software and app expectations

BOOX lists Android 12 and support for third-party apps. That opens access to reading services and other Android software, but app support does not make the device equivalent to a color tablet. Apps designed around rapid animation, color coding or video may be less satisfying, and the practical experience depends on the selected refresh mode and the app itself.

Writing hardware

A BOOX Pen Plus is listed in the standard box, so the basic handwriting setup does not depend on finding a regional bundle. The cited information does not establish replacement-tip availability, case compatibility or a particular note-taking application’s feature set; verify those details if they are part of your workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lighting and the Gen II distinction

BOOX also lists a Go 10.3 Gen II family running Android 15, with variants that do and do not have a front light. Treat Gen II as a separate product generation. Do not transfer the original model’s Android 12, screen or box-content details to a Gen II listing without checking the exact variant. In particular, a front-light choice can change how you use the reader in a dark room, while a no-front-light model may rely on ambient illumination.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Trade-offs

  • Monochrome output is excellent for books, documents and notes but unsuitable if accurate color is important.
  • E-paper refresh is not a substitute for a 90Hz LCD when you want fluid video, games or animated interfaces.
  • Third-party Android apps are supported, yet their usability can vary with ePaper refresh behavior and the app’s dependence on color or animation.

How the TCL TAB A1 NXTPAPER fits the comparison

US specification and package

TCL’s US product page describes the TAB A1 NXTPAPER as an 11-inch 2.1K display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It lists T-Pen 2 support and describes the US package as including the T-Pen 2 and a flip case. Those details make it a color-tablet reference point rather than an ePaper reader.

Why the model name needs verification

TCL’s global and A1-family pages cover a broader, changing group of products. TAB A1, TAB A1 Plus and NXTPAPER 11 Plus are not interchangeable names. Battery capacity, storage, display figures and bundle contents can differ between family members and regions. Before comparing a listing with the Lenovo or BOOX, confirm all of the following:

  1. The full model name printed on the regional product page.
  2. The country-specific SKU or model number.
  3. Screen size, resolution and refresh rate for that exact SKU.
  4. Whether the listing includes the T-Pen 2 and flip case.
  5. Storage and battery details, which TCL distinguishes across A1-family variants.

Buying checklist for a paper-like tablet

  1. Decide between anti-glare LCD and ePaper. Choose LCD when color, video and smooth app interaction matter. Choose ePaper when static reading and handwriting matter more than color and animation.
  2. Match the screen size to your documents. The documented choices range from 10.3 inches on BOOX to 11 inches on TCL and 12.1 inches on Lenovo. A larger panel can reduce zooming in a page view but may be less convenient to carry.
  3. Read the exact display line. Look for the stated technology, resolution and refresh behavior. “Paper-like” alone does not tell you whether the panel is LCD or ePaper.
  4. Verify the pen separately from pen support. A supported stylus may be an optional accessory. Lenovo explicitly notes regional variation; TCL’s US bundle names a T-Pen 2; BOOX lists a BOOX Pen Plus in the original Go 10.3 box.
  5. Check generation and front-light details. A Go 10.3 Gen II listing is not the same product generation as the original Android 12 model. Confirm whether the chosen Gen II variant has a front light.
  6. Confirm the seller’s region and SKU. Product names, storage, battery specifications and accessories can change by market. Save a copy of the local “in the box” section before ordering.
  7. Check your essential apps. On an ePaper tablet, confirm that the apps you rely on work acceptably with monochrome output and ePaper refresh modes. On an LCD tablet, verify the Android version and app requirements for your workflow.

What the specifications cannot tell you

None of the cited manufacturer pages establishes an independent ranking for eye comfort, reading fatigue, handwriting latency or long-session preference. Anti-glare treatment can alter reflections without eliminating every source of visual discomfort, and ePaper can still be difficult to read if the room lighting, font size or viewing angle is poor. Conversely, an LCD may be the more comfortable choice for a reader who needs color, zooming and responsive apps.

Brightness numbers also need context. Lenovo’s 600-nit typical and 800-nit high-brightness figures describe its listed modes, not a guarantee that every application or region reaches those levels continuously. TCL’s 90Hz figure and Lenovo’s 90Hz figure identify refresh capability, but they do not prove identical motion handling. BOOX’s 300-ppi figure describes pixel density, not color or animation performance.

Bottom line: which alternative should you buy?

Buy the Lenovo Idea Tab Plus when you want the closest documented combination of a large, color-capable tablet and an explicitly paper-like anti-glare surface. Its 12.1-inch 2560 × 1600 IPS display, 90Hz refresh and listed brightness modes make it the most versatile option for mixed media, web use, documents and color handwriting, provided the pen is available in your region.

Choose the BOOX Go 10.3 when the defining requirement is an ePaper reading and writing experience. Its 10.3-inch, 300-ppi Carta 1200 screen, Android 12 app support and included BOOX Pen Plus are compelling for monochrome books, PDFs and notes, but it is not a color-tablet replacement. If you are considering the Android 15 Go 10.3 Gen II family, verify the exact front-light and screen variant first.

Choose the TCL TAB A1 NXTPAPER itself when the local listing confirms the 11-inch 2.1K, 90Hz model and the T-Pen 2/flip-case bundle you want. Because TCL uses similar names across regions and A1-family models, matching the precise SKU matters more than relying on the NXTPAPER label alone.
