The TCL QM7L is a 2026 television, while the QM7 is the 2024 QM751G family. They are not adjacent releases: TCL introduced the QM7K for 2025, then compared that model directly with the QM7L. That missing middle generation matters when you interpret claims about brightness, processing and software.
The QM7L brings TCL’s SQD-Mini LED system, a new color stack, higher-bit halo control, a different processor and newer Google TV software. It also keeps a 144Hz panel and advertises higher series-level brightness and dimming ceilings. Whether it is the better purchase depends on the exact size, current price, motion needs, room brightness and number of high-bandwidth sources—not simply the model year.
The model-year timeline you need before comparing specifications
TCL’s naming makes the QM7L look like a direct successor to the QM7, but the sequence is:
- QM7 (2024): the QM751G family launched with QD-Mini LED technology.
- QM7K (2025): an intervening generation.
- QM7L (2026): the newer series that TCL compares directly with QM7K.
TCL’s official generation-comparison page is therefore a QM7K-versus-QM7L document, not a controlled QM7-versus-QM7L test. The sections below separate TCL’s published specifications from independent observations so a 2024 owner does not mistake an incremental claim for a measured year-over-year result.

What changed in the picture hardware?
QM7’s 2024 QD-Mini LED foundation
At launch on May 13, 2024, TCL positioned the QM7 as a premium QD-Mini LED television with QLED Pro color, AIPQ Pro processing and high-zone local dimming. TCL’s CES 2024 description said the series offered “up to 1,500+ Zones.” The same launch material listed peak brightness of up to 2,400 nits and 4K/144Hz gaming support.
Those figures describe the QM7 family as TCL sold it in 2024. They do not prove that every diagonal contains 1,500 zones or reaches 2,400 nits in normal viewing. TCL listed five diagonals—55, 65, 75, 85 and 98 inches—and the backlight specification can change with chassis size.

The QM7L changes the named display system to SQD-Mini LED with TCL’s Deep Color System. TCL says the package adds a 5 nm UltraColor Filter and an Advanced Color Purity Algorithm. In practical terms, these are intended to improve spectral purity and color volume, but TCL’s materials do not provide an independent color-volume measurement against the 2024 QM7.
The QM7L also uses 26-bit Enhanced Halo Control. TCL contrasts that with 23-bit control in the QM7K. More processing precision is designed to reduce visible blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds, yet halo performance still depends on content, viewing angle, local-dimming behavior and the exact panel size.
Brightness and dimming: published ceilings versus tested counts
TCL advertises the QM7L at up to 3,000 peak nits and up to 2,100+ discrete dimming zones for the series. Both values are ceilings, not a promise that a 55-inch and a 98-inch set perform identically. TCL’s QM7 launch ceiling was up to 2,400 nits and up to 1,500+ zones.

RTINGS’ QM7L review gives a useful size-by-size count from its review data:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| QM7L diagonal | Zones reported by RTINGS | What the number means |
|---|---|---|
| 55 inches | 800 | Review-published count for that size |
| 65 inches | 1,152 | Review-published count; this was the tested set’s size |
| 75 inches | 1,352 | Review-published count for that size |
| 85 inches | 1,624 | Review-published count for that size |
| 98 inches | 2,176 | Review-published count for that size |
The 98-inch review count is above TCL’s “2,100+” series wording, while the smaller counts are lower; that is exactly why a series-level maximum cannot be applied to every diagonal. RTINGS found its 65-inch QM7L bright and colorful, but the review does not establish a controlled brightness comparison with a 2024 QM7.
For a fair purchase decision, compare the same diagonal and look for measurements made in the same picture mode. A 75-inch QM7L versus a 65-inch QM7 is not a clean generational comparison even if both carry the QM7 name.
Processing and smart-TV software changes
TSR AI Processor replaces AiPQ Pro
The 2024 QM7 uses TCL’s AiPQ Pro processor. In TCL’s direct QM7K-to-QM7L comparison, the QM7L moves to a TSR AI Processor. TCL does not publish a standardized QM7-versus-QM7L processing benchmark, so the change should be understood as a platform update rather than a guaranteed improvement in every scene.
Processing affects upscaling, noise handling, tone mapping and motion decisions. Source quality still matters: a clean 4K stream gives the processor less repair work than a heavily compressed broadcast or low-resolution file.

Google TV 14 with Gemini versus earlier software
TCL lists Google TV 14 with Gemini on the QM7L. The QM7K comparison lists Google TV 12 with Assistant. The 2024 QM7 launched with the earlier Google TV generation available at that time. Menus, app support and voice features can change through firmware updates, so check the software version on the specific unit and region you are buying rather than assuming that two televisions with the same operating-system name behave identically.

The software difference is most meaningful if you rely on voice search, Google account integration or a newer app interface. It is less important if the television is used mainly as a display for a streaming box, game console or disc player.
Gaming, motion and HDR behavior
Refresh rate and HDMI bandwidth
TCL describes the 2024 QM7 as supporting 4K at 144Hz for gaming. The QM7L has a 144Hz native panel. On the QM7L specification page, HDMI inputs 1 and 2 accept 4K at 144Hz, while inputs 3 and 4 are listed for 4K at 60Hz.
That layout is a practical limitation for a multi-device setup. A gaming PC and one current-generation console can use the two high-bandwidth inputs, but a third 4K/120-or-higher source will need an HDMI switch, receiver or a change of connections. Verify the labeling on the exact regional model before installation.
What the independent QM7L review found
RTINGS’ review of a 65-inch QM7L reports blurry motion in Game Master mode and HDR overbrightening. Its comparison describes the QM7K as having clearer gaming motion and more restrained HDR. This is evidence about the tested QM7L and the reviewer’s QM7K comparison; it is not a controlled test against the 2024 QM7.
That finding creates a genuine trade-off. The newer QM7L may offer the newer panel and processing package, but a player who values clean motion above peak brightness or aggressive HDR may prefer the behavior observed on the QM7K—or may need to adjust the QM7L’s picture settings and test with their own games.
Who benefits most from 144Hz?
- PC players: a 144Hz input can display high frame rates when the graphics card and game actually deliver them.
- Console players: most console titles target lower frame rates, so the panel’s headroom is useful but does not make every game run at 144 frames per second.
- Movie and TV viewers: refresh-rate headroom does not by itself remove all motion blur; processing mode and source frame rate still matter.
HDR formats and everyday picture priorities
TCL lists Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+ among the QM7L’s supported HDR formats, along with other HDR standards. The QM7 launch material emphasizes QLED Pro color, QD-Mini LED and high brightness, but the supplied 2024 announcement does not provide a matching format-by-format list.
Rank #4
- SQD-Mini LED: As the ultimate Mini LED TV, it integrates the expansive TCL Deep Color System with the breakthrough TCL Halo Control System to ensure the most brilliant, pure, and immersive viewing experience possible.
- TCL Ultra Color Filter: TCL’s Ultra Color Filter with fine 5 nanometer particles (vs. standard 60 nanometer particles) bring every scene to life with pinpoint, pixel-perfect color accuracy.
- HVA 2.0 Pro Panel: The HVA 2.0 Pro Panel provides a stunning picture in nearly any environment with the high contrast, anti-reflective panel.

HDR support is not the same as HDR accuracy. RTINGS’ overbrightening observation means the QM7L can map some HDR material more aggressively than the creator intended. If you watch a lot of films in a dim room, look for a picture mode that preserves highlight detail and compare skin tones and shadow detail rather than choosing solely by the largest nits number.

Screen-size choices
Both the 2024 QM7 and 2026 QM7L are listed in 55-, 65-, 75-, 85- and 98-inch versions. The shared size range makes it easy to compare like for like, but it also makes model-number checks essential: a discounted 2024 QM751G can look similar in a retailer listing to a newer QM7L.
What the historical QM7 MSRP tells you
TCL’s 2024 launch announcement listed historical MSRPs from $1,099.99 for the 55-inch QM7 to $6,999.99 for the 98-inch model. Those were launch prices in 2024, not current street prices. They should not be used to calculate today’s value or to assume that a clearance unit includes the same warranty and return terms as a current model.
The supplied material does not establish stable current pricing for either generation. Before buying, compare the exact diagonal, model suffix, retailer warranty, return window and whether the unit is new, open-box or refurbished. A lower price can be worthwhile when the older set meets your needs, but only after you confirm what you are actually getting.
Which model makes sense for different buyers?
| Your priority | More sensible starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Latest display architecture and smart-TV platform | QM7L | It adds SQD-Mini LED, Deep Color System, 26-bit halo control, the TSR AI Processor and Google TV 14 with Gemini. |
| Lowest price for a large screen | Compare discounted QM7 and QM7L at the same size | There is no stable current-price evidence here; the older model may offer better value if its condition and warranty are acceptable. |
| Several 4K/120Hz-or-higher sources | Whichever model and setup provide enough high-bandwidth inputs | On QM7L, only HDMI 1 and 2 are listed for 4K/144Hz; HDMI 3 and 4 are 4K/60Hz. |
| Fast competitive gaming | Test motion before committing | RTINGS reported blurry Game Master motion on QM7L and clearer motion on QM7K; there is no controlled QM7-versus-QM7L result. |
| Very bright room and vivid HDR | QM7L, if the price and size fit | Its advertised ceiling is up to 3,000 nits, and RTINGS found the tested set bright and colorful, but the same review noted HDR overbrightening. |
| Film-focused viewing in a dark room | Compare tone mapping and shadow detail in person | Peak brightness alone does not establish accurate HDR presentation. |
Checks to perform before placing an order
- Confirm the model year and suffix. Look for the 2024 QM751G family designation or the 2026 QM7L name; do not rely on a product title that says only “QM7.”
- Match the diagonal. Compare 55 with 55, 65 with 65 and so on. Zone counts and backlight behavior vary by size.
- Count your high-bandwidth sources. For QM7L, reserve HDMI 1 and 2 for devices that need 4K at 144Hz and plan around the two 4K/60Hz inputs.
- Check the return policy. Motion blur, blooming and HDR tone mapping are easier to judge with your own games and movies than from a specification sheet.
- Separate claims from measurements. Treat TCL’s nits and zone figures as advertised ceilings and RTINGS’ counts and observations as review-specific evidence.
- Compare total ownership terms. Include warranty, shipping, stand or mounting requirements and the condition of any clearance or open-box unit.
What the evidence can—and cannot—prove
TCL’s specifications establish the intended feature changes: SQD-Mini LED, Deep Color System, 5 nm UltraColor Filter, Advanced Color Purity Algorithm, 26-bit Enhanced Halo Control, TSR AI Processor and Google TV 14 with Gemini on QM7L. TCL also states that QM7L is brighter in everyday viewing than QM7K, even though both generations are listed at up to 3,000 nits.

Its QM7K comparison reports clearer gaming motion and more restrained HDR. No controlled test in the supplied material directly measures the 2024 QM7 against the QM7L, so claims that the 2026 set is categorically better in every picture mode or for every player would go beyond the available evidence.
Bottom line
The QM7L is a substantial platform refresh, not simply a renamed 2024 QM7: it introduces a new Mini LED/color system, newer processing, more precise halo-control claims and newer Google TV software. Its advertised brightness and dimming ceilings are higher, but they vary by size and are not independent test results. The 2024 QM7 remains a credible choice when a same-size deal is significantly cheaper and you do not need the newer software or display architecture. Choose between them by matching size, price, ports and motion behavior to your room and devices—not by the model letter alone.
