Choose the Hisense U7SG if reflections, multiple HDMI 2.1 devices, or PC gaming flexibility matter most. Its matte anti-reflective screen is better suited to windows and lamps, it has four HDMI 2.1 inputs, and it supports up to 4K at 165Hz from a compatible PC. Choose the TCL QM7L if you watch mainly in a darker room and prefer its punchier color presentation, glossy screen, and strong local-dimming performance. Both are 2026 U.S. 4K Mini-LED Google TVs with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG, and 4K/120Hz support for current consoles.

“Hisense U7” covers several generations and regional versions. This comparison is specifically between the U.S.-market Hisense U7SG and TCL QM7L; older U7 reviews may describe different hardware.

What these two televisions are

The U7SG and QM7L are mid-range 4K televisions using Mini-LED backlighting and quantum-dot color technology. Mini-LED places many small light sources behind the LCD panel and divides them into local-dimming zones. The television can dim darker areas while keeping bright highlights intense, although the exact number of zones and the result vary by size, firmware, settings, and individual sample.

Both models run Google TV, so their basic smart-TV platform and listed HDR compatibility are not a deciding difference. The comparison lists Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG on both sets. App availability can still vary by country and service, but the available evidence does not establish a meaningful ecosystem advantage for either model.

Model-year warning

Retail listings and older reviews may shorten the name to “U7” or “QM7.” Verify the complete model code before buying. This article addresses the 2026 U.S. Hisense U7SG and 2026 U.S. TCL QM7L, not prior U7 generations or versions sold in other regions.

Screen reflections: the clearest room-based difference

Hisense U7SG: matte anti-reflective treatment

Hisense describes the U7SG’s matte treatment as reducing glare from lamps and windows. In a bright living room, that can make faces and subtitles easier to see because reflected room shapes are spread and subdued rather than appearing as sharp mirror images. A matte surface may also make a screen look slightly less glossy and saturated than a reflective finish when the room is dark, so position and lighting still matter.

TCL QM7L: glossy finish

The QM7L uses a glossy screen in the comparative testing. Gloss can preserve a crisp, high-contrast appearance in a controlled dark room, but a window or lamp directly opposite the panel can become a visible reflection. Moving the light source, closing blinds, or changing the viewing angle can help, yet those changes are not always practical in an open-plan room.

Decision rule: if reflections are a persistent daytime problem that you cannot solve with curtains or furniture placement, select the U7SG. If you mostly watch at night or can control the room, the QM7L’s glossy presentation is less of a liability.

Gaming hardware and motion

Ports: four versus two HDMI 2.1 inputs

Model HDMI 2.1 inputs HDMI 2.0 inputs Practical effect
Hisense U7SG 4 Not stated in the comparison More high-bandwidth devices can remain connected at once.
TCL QM7L 2 2 You may need to move cables or use an external switch when more than two devices require HDMI 2.1 bandwidth.

Four HDMI 2.1 sockets are useful if you have a gaming PC, two current-generation consoles, and a soundbar or receiver that needs a high-bandwidth connection. A household with one console and a streaming box may never use the extra ports. Check the receiver’s pass-through capabilities before assuming every device can run through it at full resolution and refresh rate.

Refresh-rate ceilings

The U7SG is listed for up to 4K/165Hz PC gaming. The QM7L is listed for up to 4K/144Hz. These are PC ceilings, not promises that every game will render at those rates. Your graphics card, game settings, cable, and selected resolution determine the actual signal.

TCL 55 Inch QM7L Series SQD-Mini LED QLED 4K Smart Google TV 55QM7L (2026) | 144Hz, Ultimate Color, Ultra Brightness & Contrast, HDR 10, Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Atmos, Gemini Google AI, Gaming Streaming

  • AIPQ Pro Processor: Harnessing the power of AI to finely control Picture Clarity, Contrast, Color, Motion, Upscaling, and Backlighting, all dynamically, based on the incoming video signal.

Both televisions support 4K/120Hz for current-generation consoles. A PlayStation or Xbox therefore does not gain a console-specific frame-rate advantage from the U7SG’s 165Hz ceiling. Choose the U7SG’s higher limit only if you have a PC capable of producing more than 144 frames per second at 4K and value that additional headroom.

Motion behavior matters more than the number on the box

RTINGS reports slow pixel transitions on the QM7L that produce noticeable motion blur while gaming. A 144Hz input cannot eliminate blur caused by pixels changing slowly. The U7SG’s specifications and gaming features are documented separately by RTINGS, but the available comparison does not establish a directly equivalent measured motion result. If fast competitive games are your priority, evaluate motion handling in addition to refresh rate and use the retailer’s return policy as protection against a result you find distracting.

Recommended connection layouts

  • One console: connect it directly to either television’s HDMI 2.1 input and enable the console’s 4K/120Hz mode.
  • Two consoles and a PC: the U7SG can keep all three connected to HDMI 2.1 ports. On the QM7L, reserve the two HDMI 2.1 ports for the devices you use at the highest bandwidth and move a lower-bandwidth source to HDMI 2.0.
  • Receiver or soundbar: confirm which HDMI port supports eARC and whether the receiver passes 4K/120Hz signals. If it does not, connect the gaming device directly to the TV and send audio back over eARC.
  • Long cable runs: use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when the link must carry 4K at high refresh rates. Neither television automatically requires a replacement cable; replace one only if your existing cable drops signal, shows sparkles, or fails to negotiate the desired mode.

Picture quality: color, contrast, and HDR

TCL’s color and dark-room strengths

The QM7L uses TCL’s Super Quantum Dot technology. A Tom’s Guide comparison describes its color presentation as punchier than the U7SG’s, while RTINGS reports strong local dimming and deep blacks in a dark room. TechRadar measured 95% P3 color coverage on the QM7L review sample. That is a reviewer measurement, not a guarantee for every size or picture mode.

The glossy panel can reinforce the impression of contrast when the room is dark because it does not scatter ambient light across the image. In a bright room, however, a reflected lamp can overwhelm that advantage.

Hisense’s brightness and colorful presentation

The U7SG is described as bright and colorful in the side-by-side comparison. Tom’s Guide measured 2,866.9 nits on an HDR test using a 10% window. This is one review sample’s result under that specific method; it is not a universal brightness rating for every screen size, setting, or unit.

That brightness can help HDR highlights stand out in a room with daylight, but peak measurements do not describe the whole viewing experience. Full-screen brightness, black-level control, blooming, tone mapping, viewing angle, and picture settings all affect what you see. A very small highlight can measure brightly while a larger bright scene is dimmer.

QM7L series maximum claims require qualification

TechRadar reports up to 2,100 local-dimming zones and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness for the QM7L series. TCL does not publish zone counts by size according to that review, so these are series maximums and should not be assumed to apply to every diagonal. The same caution applies to any retailer listing that repeats a top-line number without identifying the screen size or test method.

What HDR support means here

Both models list Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG. Format support means the TV can recognize those signals; it does not ensure identical tone mapping or brightness. When comparing a movie or game, use the same source, picture mode, and room lighting. Otherwise, differences in settings can look like differences in hardware.

Sizes and installation planning

Model Listed U.S. sizes Largest listed size
Hisense U7SG 55, 65, 75, 85, 100 inches 100 inches
TCL QM7L 55, 65, 75, 85, 98 inches 98 inches

Do not compare a 98-inch QM7L with a 100-inch U7SG as though they were the same product. Panel area, cabinet dimensions, stand width, shipping requirements, and price can differ substantially. Before ordering, download the exact size’s specification sheet and measure:

  • wall width and height, including trim and nearby shelves;
  • stand width if the TV will sit on furniture;
  • viewing distance and whether the chosen size blocks speakers or a fireplace;
  • doorways, stair turns, elevator dimensions, and the number of people needed to move the set;
  • VESA pattern, television weight without the stand, and the mount’s rated capacity if wall-mounting.

A wall mount should be selected only after those size-specific values are confirmed. Wall construction and the fasteners appropriate to it matter as much as the mount’s advertised weight rating.

Price and value: how to compare a volatile market

TV prices change by size, retailer, promotion, and date. Tom’s Guide cited an example of about $898 for a 65-inch QM7L and described the U7SG as somewhat cheaper at the time of its comparison. Those were dated examples, not current prices or a permanent ranking.

Use this process on the day you buy:

  1. Open the listing for the exact model suffix and diagonal, not a search result for a generic “U7” or “QM7.”
  2. Record the delivered price, including shipping, regional fees, and any required stand or installation charge.
  3. Check whether the price is a one-time promotion, membership price, open-box offer, or recurring discount.
  4. Read the return window and note restocking fees, freight responsibility, and dead-pixel or damage procedures.
  5. Compare the manufacturer warranty and the seller’s support process. A lower sticker price is less attractive if a large-screen return requires expensive freight.
  6. Recheck stock and delivery dates; a model that cannot arrive before a sale ends may not be the better value.

Compare like-for-like sizes and include the value of the U7SG’s extra HDMI 2.1 ports only if you would otherwise buy a switch or regularly swap cables. Likewise, do not pay for the QM7L’s theoretical color or contrast advantage if the set will spend most of its life reflecting a bright window.

Which TV fits your room and habits?

Choose the Hisense U7SG when…

  • your main seat faces windows, lamps, or other persistent reflections;
  • you want four HDMI 2.1 inputs for a PC and several consoles or high-bandwidth sources;
  • you have a gaming PC that can exceed 144Hz at 4K;
  • you want a 100-inch option and the room can accommodate it;
  • you prefer a bright, colorful presentation and accept that measured brightness varies by test and sample.

Choose the TCL QM7L when…

  • you watch mostly in a controlled or dark room;
  • you prefer the punchier color presentation described in the comparison;
  • deep dark-room blacks and local-dimming performance are more important than matte glare control;
  • two HDMI 2.1 inputs are enough for your devices;
  • you can tolerate or test for the motion blur associated with its slow pixel transitions.

When neither is an automatic choice

If you need an exceptionally wide viewing angle, professional color accuracy, or guaranteed blur-free competitive gaming, these specifications alone do not answer the question. Arrange a returnable purchase, inspect the exact size, and judge the set from your normal seat and sources. The published measurements are useful reference points, not a substitute for matching the television to your room.

Setup checklist after delivery

  1. Verify the box and panel model code before removing protective film or mounting the TV.
  2. Inspect the panel, corners, stand, and ports for shipping damage while the seller’s damage-report period is active.
  3. Update Google TV and the television firmware before judging picture or gaming behavior.
  4. Connect high-bandwidth sources directly to HDMI 2.1 ports and use certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cables where necessary.
  5. On each console or PC, confirm that the input reports 4K and the intended refresh rate; a cable or receiver can silently reduce the mode.
  6. Turn off unnecessary room lights and compare HDR content in the picture mode you intend to keep. Do not compare one TV in a vivid mode with the other in a filmmaker-oriented mode.
  7. Test dark scenes for blooming, bright scenes for tone-mapping behavior, subtitles for dimming artifacts, and rapid camera pans for blur.
  8. Keep the packaging until you are satisfied with the panel and have passed the return deadline.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Mistaking a different U7 generation for the U7SG

Symptom: a review mentions different ports, a different coating, or another operating system.
Fix: match the complete U7SG model code, U.S. region, screen size, and year before relying on the review.

Assuming 165Hz benefits a console

Symptom: you pay extra for the U7SG expecting a console to run above 120Hz.
Fix: both sets already support 4K/120Hz for current consoles; the U7SG’s 165Hz ceiling is primarily a PC feature.

Counting HDMI ports without mapping the system

Symptom: a receiver, console, PC, and soundbar compete for the two QM7L HDMI 2.1 inputs.
Fix: draw the signal path first. Reserve HDMI 2.1 for sources that need it, use eARC for audio where appropriate, and verify receiver pass-through.

Using peak brightness as a guarantee

Symptom: the television looks less bright than an advertised maximum.
Fix: check the test window, picture mode, screen size, and firmware. The U7SG’s 2,866.9-nit result and the QM7L’s 3,000-nit series maximum are not interchangeable specifications.

Ignoring reflections until installation

Symptom: a lamp or window is visible across the QM7L during daytime viewing.
Fix: map light sources from the main seat before buying. Select the U7SG or change the room layout if the reflection cannot be controlled.

Verdict

For most bright living rooms and complicated gaming setups, the Hisense U7SG is the safer recommendation: its matte anti-reflective screen addresses a common everyday problem, and four HDMI 2.1 inputs provide more flexibility than the QM7L’s two. Its 4K/165Hz PC ceiling is useful for high-end gaming, although it does not change the 4K/120Hz limit relevant to current consoles.

The TCL QM7L is the better choice for a controlled dark room when you value vivid quantum-dot color, strong local dimming, and deep blacks more than glare resistance. Its slow pixel transitions, reported by RTINGS, mean competitive gamers should test motion rather than choosing on the 144Hz label alone.
