Short answer: the Hisense U7SG is the stronger picture-quality choice, particularly for HDR games in a bright room. Independent testing found it significantly better overall, with higher peak brightness, brighter colors, slightly stronger contrast, more effective local dimming and better glare handling than the TCL QM6K. The TCL QM6K is the better value-oriented alternative: it offers Google TV, 4K at 144Hz, VRR up to 144Hz, two HDMI 2.1 ports and a lower entry price.

“Hisense U7” is a family name, not one universal specification. This comparison is specifically between the TCL QM6K and Hisense U7SG. U7N and U7QG are different generations or regional models, so check the complete suffix before buying.

Make sure you are comparing the right U7

Retail listings often shorten the model name to “U7,” but the suffix determines the panel generation, processing, ports and regional specification. The independent comparison available for this article tested the U7SG. It did not establish that U7N or U7QG models have identical brightness, refresh, dimming or HDMI behavior.

Before ordering, read the complete model number in the product title, specification sheet and television information menu. Match the suffix, screen size and sales region across the TV, review and return policy. A U7N or U7QG may be a sensible television in its own right, but it should not be treated as a U7SG for this comparison. Every cable and accessory decision should also be based on the exact model’s ports rather than the U7 family label.

Hardware and feature differences

TCL QM6K panel and processing

The QM6K is TCL’s 2025 QD-Mini LED 4K model. TCL specifies a 144Hz panel refresh rate, variable refresh rate up to 144Hz, up to LD500 precise-dimming zones, four HDMI inputs and one eARC connection. Its format support includes Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+ and HLG. TCL also lists AMD FreeSync Premium Pro for compatible gaming hardware.

RTINGS reports that two of the QM6K’s HDMI inputs operate as HDMI 2.1 connections. In its testing, the set accepted 4K at 144Hz and 1080p at 288Hz with VRR. Those modes are most relevant to a gaming PC; current consoles top out below the television’s maximum refresh rate.

Hisense U7SG panel and finish

The U7SG used in the comparison is a VA LCD television with a Mini-LED backlight, 4K resolution, a 165Hz native refresh rate, Dolby Vision and a matte screen finish. Its VA design contributes to the measured contrast advantage reported by RTINGS, while the Mini-LED backlight provides many independently controlled areas for HDR highlights and shadow control.

The U7SG’s matte finish is important in rooms with windows, lamps or overhead lighting. It does not make reflections disappear, but the comparison found better glare handling than on the QM6K. Confirm that a listing is the matte U7SG model; another U7 suffix can use a different surface or panel.

Picture quality: where the U7SG pulls ahead

HDR peak brightness and highlight impact

RTINGS’ updated 2026 comparison found the U7SG had higher peak brightness than the QM6K. That difference gives bright effects such as explosions, sunlight, neon signs and specular reflections more visual impact in HDR games and movies. It is most visible when the room itself is bright or when the scene contains small, intense highlights against dark surroundings.

The available comparison does not provide a complete, like-for-like numerical table for sustained full-screen brightness. Treat “brighter” as the tested overall advantage rather than a promise that every full-screen white scene will reach a particular number. If your priority is a very bright sports feed or a large white game menu, look for measurements for the exact size and regional model you plan to buy.

Color brightness

The U7SG also produced brighter colors in RTINGS’ assessment. A brighter red sign, blue sky or green landscape can retain saturation at a higher luminance instead of looking muted when HDR is engaged. The QM6K still uses quantum-dot color technology and supports modern HDR formats, so it is not a dull display; its limitation is relative brightness headroom compared with the U7SG.

Contrast and black-level behavior

Both televisions use LCD panels with Mini-LED backlights rather than self-emissive pixels. Dark scenes therefore depend on panel contrast and local-dimming control. RTINGS found the U7SG had slightly stronger contrast and more effective local dimming than the QM6K. In practical terms, the U7SG is better at keeping a dark area dark while allowing a nearby highlight to remain bright.

  • Dolby Atmos Audio: Advanced spatial audio processing can be found in movies, TV shows, and video games.

Local dimming cannot eliminate every halo. White subtitles, stars or a bright game HUD can still illuminate neighboring zones, especially when viewed off-axis. The U7SG’s advantage is reduced blooming and better control, not OLED-level pixel-by-pixel black. The QM6K’s LD500 specification describes the maximum precise-dimming capability, but the number of zones alone does not predict halo performance; tuning and scene processing matter just as much.

Reflections and viewing environment

Choose the U7SG when the seating area faces a window or receives direct room light. Its matte finish and better glare handling in the comparison preserve more of the image in those conditions. The QM6K can work well in a controlled or moderately lit room, but reflections can wash out dark scenes and make you raise the backlight, which reduces the perceived advantage of local dimming.

Neither set should be placed directly opposite an unshaded window if you can avoid it. Mounting the screen perpendicular to the strongest light source, closing blinds for daytime HDR viewing and using a bias light behind the television improve both models without changing picture settings.

Gaming performance and connectivity

Refresh rate and VRR

The QM6K’s native 144Hz panel and VRR support cover every current console mode and provide useful headroom for a PC. RTINGS specifically reports 4K/144Hz and 1080p/288Hz operation with VRR on the appropriate HDMI 2.1 inputs. A compatible PC can therefore choose 4K for image detail or 1080p at a very high refresh rate for competitive games, provided the graphics card can sustain those outputs.

The U7SG has a 165Hz native panel, giving it a modest refresh-rate advantage on a gaming PC. The available comparison does not establish a complete VRR range and port map for the U7SG, so do not assume that every HDMI input accepts 4K at 165Hz. Check the exact regional specification before planning a multi-device setup.

PS5 and Xbox Series X

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X commonly target 4K at up to 120Hz, not 144Hz or 165Hz. The QM6K therefore has ample refresh headroom for either console. Connect the console to one of the QM6K’s HDMI 2.1 ports, enable the television’s enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI mode if the menu requires it, and select 4K/120Hz with HDR in the console’s display settings.

For a U7SG, use the ports identified by the exact manual as 4K/120Hz or higher. Model suffixes and regions can change which inputs carry the fastest signal. If a console reports 60Hz only, test another HDMI input, turn on the input’s enhanced mode and replace the cable with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable before troubleshooting the console.

Gaming PC

The QM6K is the more clearly documented choice for a PC that needs 4K at 144Hz or 1080p at 288Hz with VRR. Use a modern graphics output and a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, then select the desired resolution and refresh rate in the operating system or game. Keep the PC on an HDMI 2.1 input; the remaining HDMI sockets may not provide the same bandwidth.

The U7SG’s 165Hz panel can be attractive for high-frame-rate PC gaming, but verify the input bandwidth and supported resolution before purchase. A 165Hz label on the panel does not mean every source can send 4K/165Hz through every port.

Input lag and responsiveness

The available sources do not provide a complete, citable input-lag measurement for both televisions. It would be misleading to assign one number or declare a winner on latency. Both models advertise gaming-oriented high-refresh features, but perceived responsiveness also depends on the selected picture mode, console output, game frame rate and whether motion processing is disabled.

Use the television’s Game or Game Mode, turn off extra frame interpolation and confirm that the console or PC reports the intended refresh rate. Those steps reduce processing delay without pretending that an unverified measurement applies to every size and firmware version.

Smart-TV software and built-in audio

Google TV on the QM6K

Google TV is a major practical advantage of the QM6K if you already use Google accounts, Chromecast-compatible devices or voice search. TCL lists Google TV as the platform, giving the set a familiar app-and-content interface and integrated casting. App availability, advertising and update timing can vary by country, so verify the regional software list if a specific service is essential.

Audio

TCL lists an Onkyo 2.1 audio system for the QM6K. That specification indicates a more substantial built-in arrangement than basic stereo speakers, but a television chassis still has limited bass and soundstage compared with a separate soundbar or AV system. Use the QM6K’s eARC port when sending lossless or object-based audio to a compatible receiver or soundbar.

Comparable U7SG speaker specifications were not established in the available material. If built-in sound is important, listen in a showroom or verify the exact regional specification. For either television, plan an external audio system if you sit far away, watch action films at high volume or want convincing low-frequency effects.

Prices, sizes and value

No U7SG price ladder was established in the available material, so a precise value comparison by size would be guesswork. The right way to judge the premium is to compare the exact U7SG size and suffix with the current QM6K price in your region. If the difference is small, the U7SG’s brighter HDR, stronger local dimming and matte finish are easier to justify. If the difference is large, the QM6K retains the essential 4K/144Hz gaming features at a lower entry cost.

Warranty, returns and buying logistics

Warranty length, dead-pixel coverage, retailer return windows and shipping damage procedures were not stated in the available comparison. They can differ by country, seller and screen size. Confirm the following before paying:

  • The warranty provider and whether service is handled by the manufacturer or seller.
  • How long you have to report a damaged panel or missing stand hardware.
  • Whether return shipping for a large television is free and whether the original carton is required.
  • Which HDMI, backlight and panel faults are covered after the retailer’s return period.
  • Whether the listing is for the exact U7SG suffix and your local voltage, tuner and software region.

Keep the carton and inspect the panel before wall mounting. Test every HDMI input, eARC, HDR and the highest advertised refresh mode during the return window. Large-screen returns can be expensive, so a low price is not a bargain if the seller offers no practical remedy for shipping damage.

Which television should you buy?

Choose the Hisense U7SG when picture quality comes first

  • Your room is bright or has difficult reflections.
  • You play HDR games and want more intense highlights and brighter colors.
  • You value stronger contrast and more effective local-dimming control.
  • You are willing to pay more for the correctly identified U7SG model.

The U7SG is the overall recommendation when the competing sizes are reasonably close in price and the set is confirmed to be the U7SG rather than another U7 generation.

Choose the TCL QM6K when value and Google TV matter most

  • You want a lower-cost Mini-LED television with a current 4K/144Hz gaming feature set.
  • You use Google TV, casting and Google account integration.
  • You need two documented HDMI 2.1 ports for a PC and console combination.
  • Your room lighting is manageable and you can accept weaker glare handling than the U7SG.

The QM6K is not a cut-down 60Hz television. Its 144Hz panel, VRR support, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HLG and FreeSync Premium Pro make it a capable gaming display, especially when purchased well below its launch MSRP.

Setup checklist for either model

  1. Confirm the full model suffix, screen size and regional version on the box and invoice.
  2. Place the television so windows and lamps are not directly reflected in the viewing position.
  3. Connect a PS5, Xbox Series X or PC to the input identified for the highest bandwidth.
  4. Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K high-refresh gaming.
  5. Enable the television’s enhanced, expanded or high-bandwidth HDMI option if required by its firmware.
  6. Turn on Game Mode and VRR, then verify the source reports 4K/120Hz, 4K/144Hz or the mode you intended.
  7. Enable HDR on the source and calibrate the console’s HDR adjustment screens after the television is warmed up.
  8. Use eARC for a soundbar or receiver and test audio-return control before routing cables through a wall.
  9. Test every advertised refresh mode, HDR format and HDMI input during the seller’s return period.

Common buying mistakes

Assuming every U7 is a U7SG

The U7N, U7QG and U7SG names refer to different model-year or regional products. A review of one cannot certify the brightness, finish, port layout or refresh behavior of another.

Counting dimming zones instead of evaluating the result

“LD500” is TCL’s stated maximum precise-dimming capability for the QM6K. Zone count is not a universal picture-quality score. Contrast, algorithm tuning, blooming control and viewing angle determine what you actually see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the wrong HDMI socket or cable

A high-refresh source can fall back to 60Hz when connected to a lower-bandwidth input or a cable that cannot carry the signal. Move the device to the documented HDMI 2.1 port, enable enhanced mode and use a certified Ultra High Speed cable.

Treating launch MSRP as today’s price

The QM6K MSRP was announced in January 2025, while the $499.99 55-inch direct listing was observed on October 18, 2026. Promotions end, and regional prices vary. Compare the live price and return policy at checkout.

Verdict

For the best midrange gaming picture, buy the exact Hisense U7SG when you want brighter HDR, better glare handling and more controlled local dimming. For the best value-oriented package, buy the TCL QM6K when Google TV, documented 4K/144Hz VRR support and a lower price matter more than peak picture performance. The decision is straightforward once you verify the U7 suffix, HDMI bandwidth and current regional price.
