Neither the TCL Q95K nor the Samsung HW-Q990F can be named the sound-quality winner from the available evidence. Both are specified as 11.1.4-channel systems, but there is no controlled head-to-head listening test here. Choose by the connections and TV features you need, room setup, local availability, and the listening evidence that exists for each.
At a glance: TCL Q95K vs Samsung HW-Q990F
| Decision point | TCL Q95K | Samsung HW-Q990F |
|---|---|---|
| Channel layout | 11.1.4, according to TCL’s product page: 11 main channels, one wireless subwoofer and four up-firing channels. | 11.1.4, according to Samsung Canada’s product page; includes two up-firing wireless rear speakers and a subwoofer. |
| HDMI and video | TCL lists three HDMI 2.1 ports and video transmission up to 4K/144 Hz with VRR. TCL says 48 Gbps is theoretical and actual performance depends on connected devices. | Samsung lists two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output with eARC. TechRadar’s July 2025 review reports two HDMI 2.1 inputs supporting 4K/120 Hz. |
| TV ecosystem | No comparable TV-specific feature is established in the cited product information. | Q-Symphony can pair soundbar and TV speakers, but requires a compatible Samsung TV; support depends on the exact model. |
| Independent listening evidence | No independent Q95K listening results are established here. | TechRadar’s July 2025 hands-on review includes movie, music and gaming listening with a Samsung S95F. |
Both brands’ channel counts describe their systems; matching numbers do not establish equal sound, placement flexibility or performance in your room.
Which is better for Dolby Atmos?
Both manufacturers advertise Dolby Atmos support and a 11.1.4 layout. TCL also lists DTS:X. The channel label and format support indicate what each system is designed to decode and reproduce, not which will create the more convincing height effects in a particular room. Room dimensions, ceiling characteristics, speaker placement and source material all matter, and the available listening evidence does not compare the two side by side.
What the Q95K specifications say
TCL describes the Q95K as having 11 main channels, one wireless subwoofer and four up-firing channels. Its product page lists 22 independent sound units, a dual-driver force-cancelling subwoofer, a 600 W subwoofer and 1420 W maximum output, and says the audio was co-customized with Bang & Olufsen. Those are manufacturer specifications and claims; TCL notes that laboratory results may vary with environment and equipment. Wattage and driver count are not a reliable basis for declaring it louder or better-sounding than the Samsung.

TCL also lists a 30 Hz low-frequency extension, an upper frequency figure of 20 kHz and driver distortion below 1%. It describes a “2x” smoother frequency response curve than an industry standard, but the stated comparison does not define that standard sufficiently to interpret it as an independently comparable measurement. Treat these as TCL’s published specifications, not matched test results.
What the Q990F listening review establishes
TechRadar’s July 2025 hands-on review tested the Q990F with a Samsung S95F using movies, music and games. The reviewer described an immersive presentation, controlled bass, accurately placed effects and clear vocals in that setup. These observations are useful evidence about that review system, but they do not predict every room or establish superiority over the Q95K.

Does the Samsung Q990F work with a non-Samsung TV?
Yes. Q-Symphony is the feature that specifically requires a compatible Samsung TV; it is not a prerequisite for basic soundbar operation. The HW-Q990F also has eARC, HDMI inputs, optical, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections listed by Samsung, so a non-Samsung television or other compatible source can still be used through the relevant connection.

Samsung lists Q-Symphony support for certain 2022–2025 TV models, not every Samsung television. Check the exact TV model and regional feature support before buying if you want the soundbar and TV speakers to work together. Samsung also lists SpaceFit Sound Pro, SmartThings, AirPlay, Chromecast, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect; availability can depend on region and compatible devices.

How many HDMI 2.1 ports does the TCL Q95K have?
TCL lists three HDMI 2.1 ports and says the Q95K supports video transmission up to 4K/144 Hz with VRR, as well as uncompressed Dolby Atmos and DTS:X transmission. The same page calls 48 Gbps a theoretical HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and cautions that actual performance may depend on connected devices. Confirm the port arrangement and specifications for the exact regional model before planning your connections.
The Q990F has two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output with eARC, according to Samsung. TechRadar’s review identifies its two HDMI 2.1 inputs as supporting 4K/120 Hz pass-through. Think through whether your console or PC should connect to the TV or the soundbar: the right route depends on your display’s ports, refresh-rate needs and audio-return support, not just the number printed on a soundbar specification page.

Does the Q990F include rear speakers?
Yes. Samsung says the Q990F includes two wireless rear speakers with up-firing drivers, plus a subwoofer. “Wireless” describes the audio connection; it does not mean the speakers require no power access. Plan rear-speaker positions and check the exact installation instructions for power and setup requirements.

The Q95K also includes a wireless subwoofer and uses four up-firing channels, according to TCL. The cited product details do not establish an equivalent pair of separate wireless rear units for the Q95K, so verify the contents of the regional package before assuming the systems have identical speaker arrangements.

What should you check before choosing?
Connections and sources
- Count the HDMI inputs you need after accounting for consoles, streamers and other sources.
- Check whether your TV supports the video format and refresh rate you want through its own ports and eARC arrangement.
- Verify exact regional specifications and port allocation rather than relying on a model name alone.
TV features
- Choose the Q990F’s ecosystem features for a reason only if you own a compatible Samsung TV and have confirmed Q-Symphony support for its exact model.
- Do not assume an ecosystem feature is available in every country or across every generation of compatible devices.
Room and installation
- Measure the space below or in front of your TV. TCL gives the Q95K soundbar width as 1200 mm; TechRadar lists the Q990F bar at 1232 × 70.8 × 138 mm, the subwoofer at 249 × 251.8 × 249 mm and each rear unit at 129.5 × 201.3 × 140.4 mm.
- Allow for rear-speaker placement and practical access to power, especially if seating or room layout limits where the speakers can go.
- Consider room size and soundbar clearance alongside the claimed channel count; neither specification settles how well a system will fit your room.
Price, availability and support
Current price, stock and regional warranty or support for the Q95K are not established here, so compare live offers in your market before deciding. TechRadar’s July 2025 review cited Q990F launch-price references of $1,999, £1,699 and AU$2,099; those are historical figures, not current offers. Samsung announced the Q990F on January 14, 2025, as the Q990D successor.
So, which flagship soundbar wins?
The Samsung HW-Q990F is the more evidence-backed choice for readers who want included rear speakers, value Q-Symphony with a confirmed compatible Samsung TV, and prefer a model with published independent listening observations. The TCL Q95K is the more connection-focused candidate for readers who need its listed three HDMI 2.1 ports or claimed 4K/144 Hz support and can confirm local stock, warranty and support.
Neither recommendation is a verdict on comparative sound quality: no controlled direct listening comparison between the two is established. If sound is the deciding factor, audition both in comparable conditions where possible rather than treating channel count, wattage or feature lists as a substitute.
