There is no evidence-based universal winner between the 65-inch TCL P8L and Hisense U7N. Both product families advertise Mini-LED or QLED technology and 144Hz-class gaming features, but the model names cover different regional versions. The sensible choice depends on the exact local SKU, your required smart-TV platform and gaming features, and the current price in the same market.
TCL publishes a 144Hz native panel rate and a 288Hz accelerator mode for compatible sources connected to HDMI 1 or 2. Hisense documents 144Hz VRR or Game Mode Pro on U7N variants, with materially different platforms and broadcast features by country. Neither manufacturer specification sheet proves which television has better measured contrast, HDR brightness, blooming control, processing or input lag.
The short answer
Choose the TCL P8L if your local 65-inch version is sold at a competitive price and you specifically want TCL’s advertised 288Hz accelerator mode, native 144Hz operation and an integrated 2.1-channel ONKYO system. Choose a Hisense U7N when the exact regional model gives you a platform or feature you need, such as Google TV and an ATSC 3.0 tuner on the US 65U7N, or the broad HDR-format support listed for the Japanese 65U7N.
Do not buy on the family name alone. Hisense uses 65U7N in Japan and the United States but 65U7NQTUK in the United Kingdom. TCL warns that P8L specifications can vary by model and region. A 112-zone figure often associated with the P8L belongs to TCL’s 85-inch configuration, not the 65-inch set.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why the regional model number matters
Television manufacturers frequently reuse a series name while changing tuners, operating systems, ports, speakers, power measurements and even the way refresh rates are described. In this comparison, those changes are documented rather than hypothetical.
| Product label | Market-specific identity | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| TCL P8L, 65-inch | UK product page and TCL global material | QD-Mini LED family; 144Hz native refresh; 288Hz accelerator mode from a compatible HDMI source through HDMI 1 or 2; ONKYO 2.1 system on 65-inch models |
| Hisense 65U7N | Japan | 65V-class 4K model; VIDAA; 120Hz motion handling and 144Hz VRR in game mode; two HDMI 2.1 inputs; listed HDR formats; 2.1 audio rated at 40W maximum |
| Hisense 65U7N | United States | 65-inch Mini-LED QLED 4K Google TV; 144Hz Game Mode Pro; 48–144Hz VRR; FreeSync Premium Pro; ALLM; ATSC 3.0 tuner |
| Hisense 65U7NQTUK | United Kingdom | 65-inch 4K 144Hz Mini-LED TV with VIDAA and 144Hz Game Mode Pro |
Before ordering, copy the complete model suffix from the retailer listing and compare it with the manufacturer’s page for your country. Do not assume that a Japanese 65U7N has the same operating system or tuner as a US 65U7N, or that either is the UK 65U7NQTUK.
TCL P8L: what the 65-inch model actually offers
QD-Mini LED panel and dimming claim
TCL describes the P8L as a QD-Mini LED television. Its UK page advertises up to 112 full-array local-dimming zones, but the page’s own footnote says that 112-zone configuration is available on 85-inch models. The evidence therefore does not support assigning 112 zones to the 65-inch P8L. TCL does not establish a 65-inch zone count in the material available for this comparison.
Mini-LED and quantum-dot labels describe the display architecture and color technology; they are not a substitute for measurements. Zone count, peak luminance, black-level behavior, blooming and tone mapping can vary with screen size and firmware. No controlled test of the 65-inch P8L was provided here.
Refresh rate and accelerator mode
TCL states that P8L panels run at a 144Hz native refresh rate. Its global material also describes a 288Hz accelerator mode, achievable from a compatible HDMI source through HDMI 1 or HDMI 2. That wording matters: the mode requires suitable source hardware and the correct HDMI input, and the advertised figure should not be read as a universal 288Hz output from every device or application.
For a PC, verify that the graphics card, cable, resolution and game support the desired mode. For a console, check the console’s supported refresh modes; a 288Hz setting does not make a console render beyond its own limit. TCL’s published number also does not establish input-lag performance or whether motion processing introduces artifacts.

Integrated audio
The 65-inch P8L is listed with TCL’s ONKYO 2.1 Hi-Fi system. TCL says the 65-, 75- and 85-inch sizes use this configuration, while the 55-inch variant uses 2.0 speakers. “2.1” indicates a two-channel arrangement with a bass channel or woofer; it does not reveal dialogue clarity, bass extension, maximum clean volume or surround performance. Those require listening tests.

Hisense U7N: the same name, different televisions
Japan: 65U7N
Hisense Japan identifies its 65U7N as a 65V-class 4K television. The listed HDR compatibility includes HDR10, HLG, HDR10+, HDR10+ Adaptive, Dolby Vision and Dolby Vision IQ. The table specifies 120Hz motion handling with 144Hz VRR in game mode, two HDMI 2.1 inputs and the VIDAA smart-TV platform.
The Japanese listing gives a 2.1 speaker configuration with 40W maximum output and 0.5W standby power. It reports annual consumption of 166kWh under the page’s stated 2026 Japanese measurement standard. That energy figure is a Japan-market manufacturer measurement, not a universal consumption estimate; household use, picture mode, brightness and local test rules can produce different results.
United States: 65U7N
Hisense USA describes its 65U7N as a 65-inch Mini-LED QLED 4K Google TV. The US page advertises 144Hz Game Mode Pro, a 48–144Hz VRR range, FreeSync Premium Pro and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). It also lists an ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN TV tuner, a broadcast feature not established for the Japanese or UK versions in the supplied specifications.
The US operating system is Google TV, so app availability, account requirements and interface differ from VIDAA sets. A US buyer who relies on Google TV features should confirm that the listing really is the US 65U7N rather than an imported regional model.

United Kingdom: 65U7NQTUK
Hisense UK’s model is identified as 65U7NQTUK, not simply the Japanese or US 65U7N designation. The page describes a 65-inch 4K 144Hz Mini-LED television with VIDAA and 144Hz Game Mode Pro. It should be treated as a distinct SKU when checking ports, tuners, apps, warranty and energy labeling.

Gaming: similar headline numbers, different conditions
On paper, both families target high-refresh gaming. The meaningful differences are how each company defines the mode and which inputs or source ranges are documented.
| Gaming point | TCL P8L | Hisense U7N documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Panel or game refresh claim | 144Hz native; 288Hz accelerator mode advertised | Japan: 120Hz motion handling with 144Hz VRR in game mode; US: 144Hz Game Mode Pro; UK: 144Hz Game Mode Pro |
| VRR information | 288Hz mode requires a compatible HDMI source; the cited pages do not provide a complete VRR range | US page specifies 48–144Hz VRR and FreeSync Premium Pro; Japan page specifies 144Hz VRR in game mode |
| Port requirement | TCL identifies HDMI 1 or 2 for the 288Hz accelerator mode | Japan listing specifies two HDMI 2.1 inputs; port details for the US and UK pages should be checked on the local listing |
| Latency evidence | No controlled input-lag measurement supplied | No controlled input-lag measurement supplied |
For a PC gamer, the TCL’s 288Hz claim may be the deciding feature only if your computer can deliver the required signal and you connect it to HDMI 1 or 2. The US Hisense model’s explicit 48–144Hz VRR range and FreeSync Premium Pro certification may be more useful if your graphics hardware benefits from adaptive sync across a wide frame-rate range. Neither specification tells you how the sets behave with dark-scene flicker, inverse ghosting, chroma subsampling or motion interpolation.
For console gaming, compare supported 4K/120Hz modes, ALLM behavior, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and the number of high-bandwidth inputs on the exact local SKU. A television can advertise 144Hz while a console remains limited to lower output rates. Use the television’s game picture mode when testing, because standard processing modes can add latency.

Both televisions use Mini-LED branding, and TCL adds quantum-dot terminology for the P8L while Hisense calls the US U7N a Mini-LED QLED model. Those labels suggest a modern backlight and wide-color design, but they do not establish a winner in real viewing.
No cited source supplies controlled measurements for these exact 65-inch regional models covering peak HDR brightness, sustained brightness, black level, contrast, local-dimming transitions, blooming around subtitles, color accuracy, tone mapping, upscaling, viewing angles or motion artifacts. Manufacturer feature pages are useful for compatibility and advertised modes, not for ranking image quality under identical test conditions.
If picture quality is your priority, look for an independent test of the precise suffix sold in your country. A review of a different size or region may use another backlight configuration, firmware, tuner or picture preset. Treat claims such as “better blacks” or “brighter HDR” as unverified until the tester identifies the exact model and explains the measurement method.

HDR and format support
The Japanese Hisense specification is the only cited listing that enumerates a complete HDR set: HDR10, HLG, HDR10+, HDR10+ Adaptive, Dolby Vision and Dolby Vision IQ. This breadth can matter if your streaming services or disc player use multiple formats, but it is specific to Japan’s 65U7N listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe available TCL and other Hisense regional descriptions do not establish an identical HDR-format list for every market. Do not transfer the Japanese U7N’s format claims to the US 65U7N or UK 65U7NQTUK without checking their local pages. Format compatibility also does not indicate how well a television maps highlights or handles filmmaker-intended brightness.
Sound and external-audio planning
TCL confirms a 2.1-channel ONKYO system on the 65-inch P8L. Hisense Japan lists 2.1 channels and 40W maximum output for its 65U7N. These are not directly comparable performance ratings: TCL’s cited material does not provide an equivalent wattage figure, and Hisense’s 40W value applies to Japan.
Neither channel count nor maximum rated power predicts dialogue intelligibility, bass quality or distortion at high volume. If you watch films in a large room, plan for a soundbar or AV receiver and verify the local television’s audio-return connection and passthrough formats. The supplied specifications do not establish identical eARC, optical-output or codec behavior for every regional model, so inspect the exact connection panel before buying.

Platform choice is one of the clearest regional differences. The Japanese 65U7N and UK 65U7NQTUK listings use VIDAA, while the US 65U7N uses Google TV. App catalogs, voice controls, update policies, profiles and regional services can therefore differ even when the screen size and series name match.

TCL says P8L specifications and features can vary by model and region and may change without notice. Confirm the operating system, app support, tuner, HDMI layout and wireless standards on the current local listing before treating them as purchase requirements.
Price and value evidence
TechRadar reported a UK launch price of £849 for the 65-inch TCL P8L in 2026. That is historical launch context, not a current offer or a promise that stock remains at that price.
No same-market current price for a 65-inch Hisense U7N was established alongside that figure. It would therefore be misleading to declare either television the better value or to calculate a percentage saving. Retail pricing, promotions, retailer warranties and availability change by country and date.
When comparing offers, put the exact SKU, delivered price, warranty term, return window and included accessories in one table. An apparently cheaper imported television may have the wrong tuner, a different power plug, limited app support or no local warranty. A higher shelf price can be reasonable if it buys the platform, ports or support you actually need.
Which one should you buy?
Pick the TCL P8L when these conditions fit
- Your local 65-inch P8L listing confirms the features you need and is priced competitively against the exact local Hisense model.
- You have a compatible HDMI source and want to use TCL’s advertised 288Hz accelerator mode through HDMI 1 or 2.
- You value the documented 144Hz native rate and the 65-inch model’s ONKYO 2.1 speaker configuration.
- You have checked the actual P8L zone count rather than assuming the 112-zone figure from the 85-inch model.
Pick a Hisense U7N when these conditions fit
- The regional model supplies a platform you prefer: Google TV on the US 65U7N or VIDAA on the Japan and UK listings.
- You need US-specific features such as 48–144Hz VRR, FreeSync Premium Pro, ALLM or an ATSC 3.0 tuner.
- You are buying in Japan and want the listed HDR10, HLG, HDR10+, HDR10+ Adaptive, Dolby Vision and Dolby Vision IQ support, plus the stated 2.1/40W configuration.
- The UK 65U7NQTUK is the locally supported model and offers the 144Hz Game Mode Pro features you require.
Wait for better evidence when picture quality is the deciding factor
If your decision depends on HDR impact, dark-room blooming, upscaling or motion cleanliness, neither the published specifications nor the overlapping refresh-rate claims answer the question. Seek a controlled review of the exact regional 65-inch model, or buy from a retailer with a practical return period so you can evaluate your room, viewing distance and content.
Buyer checklist before checkout
- Record the complete model number. Confirm whether the listing says P8L, 65U7N or 65U7NQTUK and match the country suffix.
- Check the operating system and tuner. Verify VIDAA versus Google TV and confirm terrestrial-broadcast compatibility for your region.
- Match gaming hardware to ports. For TCL’s 288Hz claim, use HDMI 1 or 2 and a compatible source. For Hisense, confirm the required HDMI 2.1 inputs and the advertised VRR range on the local page.
- Confirm display claims at the correct size. Do not apply TCL’s 85-inch 112-zone statement to the 65-inch P8L.
- Check audio expectations. Note TCL’s ONKYO 2.1 description or the Japanese Hisense 2.1/40W rating, then decide whether an external sound system is necessary.
- Compare current delivered prices. Treat the reported £849 P8L figure as a 2026 UK launch price, not as today’s price, and obtain a current price for the same-market Hisense model.
- Review warranty and returns. Make sure an imported or marketplace television has local service coverage and a return route if the panel has defects.
- Look for model-specific testing. Give more weight to measurements of the exact 65-inch regional SKU than to reviews of another size or country.
Bottom line
The TCL P8L is the more compelling specification match for a buyer who wants TCL’s documented 144Hz native panel, HDMI-dependent 288Hz accelerator mode and 65-inch 2.1 ONKYO audio. The Hisense U7N is the better fit when its regional version provides a required platform, tuner, HDR list or adaptive-sync feature. Because current same-market prices and controlled side-by-side measurements are not established, the responsible answer to “which 65-inch TV is better?” is to choose the exact local SKU that meets your priorities rather than declare a universal winner.
