If you want body art without committing to permanent ink, start with a water-transfer decal or temporary tattoo sticker: it sits on the skin’s surface and is designed to be changed. Henna is a stain-based alternative, but in the United States the FDA says henna is approved only as a hair dye, not for direct skin application. Neither “temporary” nor “natural” means risk-free.
What can I use instead of a real tattoo?
Choose based on how long you want the design to last and whether you want an image on the skin’s surface or a stain. For a look you expect to change soon, use a decal or sticker tattoo. Henna is commonly used for stain-based body art, but it is not FDA-approved for direct skin application in the United States. Body makeup or paint may suit a washable-looking style, provided the exact product is labeled for the body area you intend to use and you follow its directions.
- Water-transfer decal or sticker tattoo: A design transfers from coated paper onto the skin with water. It is a practical choice for trying a design or changing your look.
- Adhesive-backed decal: Some versions have an adhesive backing that creates a partial or complete barrier between the dyes and skin. That construction does not guarantee a reaction-free experience.
- Henna or mehndi: A stain-based option, but the FDA’s U.S. guidance says henna is approved only for hair dye, not direct application to skin.
- Body makeup or paint: Consider it only when the product label allows use on the intended area; suitability and wear time depend on the specific product.
- Permanent tattoo with later removal: This is not a low-commitment substitute. Removal can be difficult, costly, painful, incomplete, or cause scarring.
How long do temporary tattoos last?
Wear time depends on the decal and product. The FDA Office of Women’s Health says sticker tattoos last hours to days, while the FDA’s broader fact sheet says decal temporary tattoos may last from a day to a week or more. Treat those as product-dependent ranges, not a promise for any particular design.

What is the difference between a sticker tattoo and henna?

The FDA material does not establish comparable application skill, color range, or removal performance for every product. Follow the specific product directions rather than relying on a general category label.
Is black henna safe?
Do not treat black henna as a safe or natural version of henna. The FDA says products sold as black henna often contain para-phenylenediamine (PPD), a hair dye that can cause dangerous reactions and is not permitted in cosmetics intended for skin. The FDA also reports reactions to products marketed as henna or black henna.

How can I reduce the chance of a skin reaction?
- Read the product label and ingredient list. U.S. retail cosmetics sold to consumers must list ingredients, but FDA says this requirement does not apply to professional-use-only products and samples.
- For a temporary tattoo intended for the face, the FDA suggests trying it first on a less conspicuous area. This does not guarantee that a reaction will not occur.
- Do not assume an adhesive barrier makes a decal safe for everyone; the FDA notes that adhesives and other ingredients can cause problems and that reactions have been reported.
- For body makeup or paint, confirm that the label permits use on the body area you have in mind and follow its directions.
- Check local rules if you are considering tattooing or a professional body-art service. The FDA says local tattooing practices are generally regulated by state and local officials, and it does not typically enforce those practices.
Why a permanent tattoo is not easily reversible
Permanent tattoo removal may be incomplete, costly, painful, or leave scars. The FDA Office of Women’s Health notes that some laser removal takes 6–10 treatments and warns, “You may not be able to completely remove your tattoo.” If reversibility is the priority, a surface decal is a more direct way to try a design without taking on the removal process.
