Four Tata Trusts trustees reportedly accused fellow trustees Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh of abandoning their long-held opposition to a possible Tata Sons listing. Reuters reported the dispute on October 6, 2026, citing two unnamed sources familiar with a letter dated October 5. The letter was not public in Reuters’ account, and no final decision on a listing was reported.
What the reported letter says
According to Reuters, the four trustees named as signatories were Noel Tata, Neville Tata, Darius Khambata, and Bhaskar Bhat. They reportedly wrote to Srinivasan and Singh, alleging that the pair had shifted from the trustees’ previous opposition to listing Tata Sons.
The signatories reportedly argued that exploring ways to keep Tata Sons unlisted was consistent with positions previously approved by seven charitable trusts. That is the signatories’ reported argument; the account does not establish that every trustee shared the same position or provide the letter itself for review. Reuters attributed its account to two unnamed people familiar with the letter.
One source characterized the letter’s argument this way: “They also said that trust was not interfering in the affairs of Sons and only voicing opinions on company’s listing as controlling shareholders.” This is a source’s description of what the authors said, not a public statement by a named signatory.

Why a listing is at issue
Tata Sons is the holding company of Tata Group companies. Reuters’ October 6 report says it is the holding company of 26 publicly listed Tata Group companies and that Tata Trusts owns 66% of Tata Sons. Those figures are as reported by Reuters, not independently verified here against company filings.
The case for remaining unlisted
The signatories’ reported position emphasizes continuity with earlier trust decisions and the trusts’ role as controlling shareholders. Their argument, as described by Reuters, is that expressing a view on whether Tata Sons should list is not the same as interfering in the company’s day-to-day affairs.

The case for listing
Reuters also reported that two trustees had supported a listing in media interviews, saying expansion—including in semiconductors—could require more capital than the group could generate internally. The reprint does not name those trustees or give details of the interviews, so it does not establish that Srinivasan and Singh made that specific argument.
What the RBI decision and restructuring proposal mean
Reuters reported that the Reserve Bank of India had rejected Tata Sons’ request for an exemption from rules that would require a listing, and that a restructuring proposal was being considered. The report does not include the RBI order or the precise rule text. It therefore does not establish the company’s ultimate regulatory status or the outcome of any restructuring.

Why the disagreement matters
The dispute is about more than a financing route. It puts the trusts’ reported preference for continuity and private ownership alongside arguments that listing could help fund expansion, while raising questions about how controlling shareholders express their views without directing company management. The October 6 report documents an ongoing disagreement, not a settled policy or corporate outcome.
