Tata Power and Imperial College London signed a memorandum of understanding on 13 October 2026 to explore collaboration in energy-transition research, technology and knowledge exchange. The announced areas include grid flexibility, energy storage, AI and machine-learning applications in energy, and advanced energy systems. The announcement sets out goals for the partnership, not launched projects or completed results.
What the Tata Power–Imperial College London MoU covers
The agreement is an exploratory framework for the two institutions to consider working together. Tata Power brings experience developing and operating energy infrastructure at scale; Imperial contributes research capabilities in energy systems, engineering, digital technologies, economics and decarbonisation. The parties say they want to connect those strengths to support more flexible, resilient and lower-carbon energy systems, while enabling knowledge exchange and innovation between India and the UK. These are stated aims, not demonstrated outcomes. Tata Power’s announcement does not provide a project list, budget, timeline, governance structure or delivery milestones.
Which energy-transition areas are named?
The release identifies areas the parties will explore; it does not confirm that each has become an active workstream.

- Energy storage: research and technology related to storing energy for use when needed.
- AI and machine learning in energy: potential applications of these tools in energy systems.
- Advanced energy systems: a broad area named in the announcement, without specific technologies or projects identified.
- Research, technology and knowledge exchange: the wider forms of collaboration contemplated by the MoU.
Is the partnership already delivering projects?
Not according to the 13 October 2026 announcement. It describes an MoU to explore collaboration and its intended direction; it does not report funded joint projects, completed research or deployed solutions. No named project leads, schedules or implementation milestones are provided, so the agreement should not be treated as evidence that a particular technology is being developed or demonstrated.

Tata Power CEO and managing director Dr. Praveer Sinha framed the need in terms of India’s transition: “India’s energy transition is entering a phase where scale, flexibility and reliability will be as important as the pace of renewable energy growth.” He said the collaboration would explore solutions to real-world industry challenges that could be relevant to India and the wider global transition. Imperial’s Vice Provost (Research and Enterprise), Professor Mary Ryan, described the company as a partner for applying research across disciplines to challenges too large for standard approaches to innovation. These statements explain the parties’ rationale; they do not establish project outcomes.
How a previous demand-response trial fits in
Imperial and Tata Power have a separate record of work on energy flexibility. In a trial reported by Imperial College London on 16 September 2024, more than 1,000 residential customers in Mumbai and New Delhi used Wi-Fi-controlled smart switches connected to individual appliances. Automatic 30-minute switch-off events were used to test demand management. Imperial reported the following results for that trial:
Rank #2
- Around 8.5% average household demand reduction during switch-off events.
- 5.4 MWh of electricity consumption avoided from March 2023 to July 2024.
- An average carbon-emission reduction effect of 2.3% and average cost saving of 2.5%.
- An average net mitigation cost of -$23 per ton of CO2 after device and installation costs.
These figures apply to the population and intervention in the 2024 trial, as reported by Imperial; they are not results of the 2026 MoU and should not be generalized to other customers or locations. The 2026 announcement does not identify the trial, its switches or its methods as part of the new agreement. Imperial’s 2024 trial report and its broader Powering Mission programme page offer context on earlier flexibility work, but neither establishes a deliverable under the MoU.
Why the India–UK link matters
The announcement presents the agreement as a way to bring research expertise and large-scale energy-infrastructure experience together across India and the UK. UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said collaboration between British research teams and Indian business has potential to make a difference; Harjinder Kang, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India, called it an example of the two countries combining strengths. Those are endorsements of the partnership’s potential, not independent assessments of impact.
