Tata Play Smart is the new app that brings more than 500 live television channels to supported Samsung smart TVs in India. It runs over a broadband connection, uses a traditional channel-number and electronic-program-guide interface, and does not require an existing Tata Play satellite subscription. Plans reportedly start at INR 199 per month.
What is Tata Play Smart?
Tata Play Smart is Tata Play’s internet-delivered live-TV service for supported Samsung televisions running Tizen OS. Instead of receiving channels through a satellite dish, the app streams them through the internet connection attached to the TV.
The service is intended to resemble conventional pay television rather than a purely on-demand streaming app. Viewers can browse dedicated channel numbers, use an electronic program guide (EPG), and navigate with a TV remote. Catch-up viewing is also available for selected channels, although the reports do not identify every channel that supports it.
Tata Play launched the service in India. Reports also describe availability on Android TV, Google TV, Amazon Fire TV and VIDAA devices, but Tata Play has not published a complete device-by-device compatibility list in the information available for this launch.

Can you watch Tata Play without a dish?
Yes. Tata Play Smart does not require a Tata Play satellite plan, satellite dish or external set-top box. The app itself is installed on a compatible TV, while a reliable broadband connection carries the channels.
That changes the practical requirement from satellite reception to dependable internet service. If your connection is unstable or has a restrictive data allowance, live channels may pause, reduce picture quality or become unavailable even though the television and app are compatible.
How much does Tata Play Smart cost?
Launch reports put the starting price at INR 199 per month. The Economic Times reports that the first language costs Rs 199 monthly and each additional language costs Rs 99. Tata Play’s current channel bundles, taxes, promotional terms and billing conditions should be checked in the app before payment because the published reports do not provide a complete plan catalogue.

Will it work on your Samsung Tizen TV?
The launch is for supported Samsung smart TVs running Tizen OS, not every Samsung television. The reports do not include a full model-year or regional compatibility matrix, so the app-store listing on your television is the most practical first check.
- Connect the Samsung TV to a reliable broadband network.
- Open the TV’s app store and search for Tata Play Smart.
- Check that the app is offered for your exact TV model and region.
- Install the app, open it and review the available language and channel packages.
- Confirm the current monthly price and any terms before starting the subscription.
If the app does not appear, do not assume that a firmware update will make the TV eligible. Compatibility can depend on model, Tizen version, country and Tata Play’s rollout schedule.

What channels and features are included?
Tata Play says the service carries more than 500 live channels. The launch material does not provide a channel-by-channel catalogue, so the exact news, entertainment, sports, regional and language mix should be checked in the app for your location and selected plan.

Tata Play is presenting Smart as an additional distribution route, not a replacement for its satellite business. Managing director and CEO Harit Nagpal said: “Tata Play is not looking at this as a shift away from DTH, but as an expansion of how we serve evolving consumer needs.”

The move comes as India’s paid DTH market contracts. The Economic Times, citing the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s April–June 2026 performance indicator report, says the four paid DTH operators had 48.56 million active subscribers on June 30, 2026, down 13.4% from 56.07 million a year earlier. Tata Play was reported at 14.84 million subscribers and a 30.56% market share on that date.
For households already centered on smart TVs and broadband, an app removes installation and dish-placement requirements while preserving a familiar linear-TV experience. For households with unreliable internet, satellite reception may remain the more predictable delivery method.
