Secure a Tapo camera by protecting the TP-Link account first, then tightening who can use the camera and how it reaches your network. Replace any reused password with a unique one, turn on Two-Step Verification, remove unfamiliar trusted devices, use camera sharing instead of giving away the main login, and select the strongest Wi-Fi encryption your exact model supports. Remote viewing is an authenticated account feature; TP-Link does not document one universal remote-access off switch for every Tapo model, so account security and access permissions are the primary controls.
How Tapo camera security is organized
A Tapo camera has several security layers that work together:
- TP-Link account protection: The account password and Two-Step Verification determine whether a new phone, tablet or browser can sign in.
- Trusted-device control: The account records devices that have completed sign-in verification. You can remove devices you no longer recognize or use.
- Sharing permissions: Other people can be granted camera access through Tapo’s sharing feature without receiving the account’s primary credentials.
- Home-network protection: Wi-Fi encryption limits who can join the network to which the camera is connected. WPA and WPA2 work with all Tapo cameras; WPA3 is available only on selected models.
- Remote-use authentication: Live viewing while away from home is tied to an authenticated Tapo account. The practical question is therefore who can authenticate and what that account is allowed to see.
Changing only the camera’s Wi-Fi password, for example, does not replace a compromised TP-Link password. Conversely, a strong account password cannot compensate for an open or weakly protected home network. Apply the controls in the order below.

| Control | What to do | What it protects | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| TP-Link password | Create a unique password containing numbers, letters, capitals and symbols. | Stops reuse of a password exposed on another service from opening the camera account. | It must not be reused anywhere else. |
| Two-Step Verification | Enable it at Me > View Account > Login Security > Two-Step Verification. | Requires a time-sensitive code when a new device signs in. | The position of Me can vary by Tapo App version. |
| Trusted Devices | Review the list and remove anything unfamiliar. | Forces the removed device to sign in again and provide a verification code. | A displayed login location is inferred from the ISP IP address, not a precise physical position. |
| Camera sharing | Invite other users through the app’s sharing function. | Gives access without revealing the main account credentials. | Review and revoke shares when a person’s access should end. |
| Wi-Fi encryption | Use WPA or WPA2, or WPA3 when your exact camera model supports it. | Protects the wireless connection between the camera and router. | WPA3 compatibility is model-specific. |
1. Replace the TP-Link account password
Why this is the foundation
The TP-Link account is the identity used for Tapo’s authenticated app access. A password that has appeared on another website is a liability even if the Tapo camera itself has never been touched. TP-Link’s 2026 guidance calls for a strong password with a mix of numbers, letters, capitals and symbols, and specifically says not to reuse the same password across platforms.
#1 Best Overall
- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
How to make the change safely
- Open the Tapo App and enter the account settings from the profile area.
- Choose the option to change the TP-Link account password. The exact label can differ by app release.
- Generate a new value with a password manager rather than adapting a familiar password. The result should be unique to this TP-Link account and difficult to guess.
- Save it in the password manager, submit the change, and sign in again wherever the app requests the new credential.
Do not send the password to another household member by text or write it on the camera. If someone needs access, use camera sharing. A password manager also prevents the common failure of creating a strong password and then reusing it on email, shopping or social accounts.
When to change it immediately
- You receive an unexpected sign-in or verification message.
- An unfamiliar device appears in the trusted-device list.
- A former household member, installer or service provider knew the old password.
- The password was reused on a service that suffered a breach, even if the Tapo account shows no unusual activity.
2. Turn on Two-Step Verification
What the feature does
Tapo’s Two-Step Verification adds a second proof of identity for a new device. After the password is entered, the new device must provide a time-sensitive code delivered by app notification or email. This means a stolen or reused password alone should not complete a first-time sign-in.
Exact path in the Tapo App
- Open Me. On some app versions, the profile entry is positioned differently.
- Select View Account.
- Open Login Security.
- Choose Two-Step Verification and follow the enrollment prompts.
- Complete a test sign-in on a device that is not already trusted, if the app offers that option, so you know where the code arrives.
Keep access to the email account or phone that receives the verification prompt. If that account is also protected by a weak or reused password, the second step is less useful. Treat an unexpected code as a warning: do not approve a sign-in you did not start, and change the TP-Link password if you suspect someone has it.

3. Audit trusted devices and login activity
How to review the list
- In the Tapo App, open Me > View Account > Login Security.
- Open Trusted Devices and compare each entry with phones, tablets and browsers you actually use.
- Remove a device you cannot identify, no longer own, or no longer want authorized.
- After removal, expect that device to be logged out and required to enter a verification code at its next sign-in.
Keep in mind that the location shown for a login is based on the ISP’s IP address. A city or region in the activity record may therefore differ from the device’s physical location, especially on mobile networks, corporate connections or privacy-oriented internet services. Use the device name, time and your own account history together rather than treating the location as a GPS reading.
What to do with an unknown entry
Remove it first, then change the account password and confirm that Two-Step Verification remains enabled. Review camera-sharing permissions as well. This sequence invalidates the old credential, removes the recognized session and checks the other route by which someone could have access.
4. Share cameras without sharing the main login
Why account sharing is risky
Tapo streams and recordings are private to people signed in to the associated TP-Link account or explicitly authorized for SD-card access. Giving another person the main email address and password makes that person a full account user: they may remain signed in, appear as a trusted device and continue to have access after the original reason for sharing has ended.

Use the app’s camera-sharing function
- Open the camera in the Tapo App and choose its sharing option.
- Invite the other person’s account through the in-app flow rather than sending your own credentials.
- Grant only the access needed for the job or household arrangement.
- When access should end, remove the share and check the trusted-device list for devices that person used.
Sharing is also the cleaner approach for a babysitter, family member, contractor or property manager. It leaves the primary account under your control and gives you a clear place to revoke access.
5. Choose the strongest Wi-Fi encryption your camera supports
TP-Link states that all Tapo cameras support WPA and WPA2, while WPA3 is supported by selected models. Before changing the router’s wireless security mode, check the exact camera specification; selecting WPA3 on a model that does not support it can disconnect the camera.
| Wi-Fi mode | Tapo compatibility established by TP-Link | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| WPA | Supported by all Tapo cameras. | Use only when required by older equipment; it is not the preferred choice when a stronger compatible mode is available. |
| WPA2 | Supported by all Tapo cameras. | Broadly compatible baseline for a Tapo installation. |
| WPA3 | Supported by selected models. | Choose it only after confirming support for the specific camera and other essential devices. |
Make router changes when you can physically reach the camera. If the camera drops offline after a security-mode change, restore a compatible mode, reconnect the camera, and then verify the model’s specification before trying WPA3 again. The account password and Two-Step Verification settings are separate from this Wi-Fi choice, so changing wireless encryption does not substitute for either one.

6. Understand and control remote access
What remote viewing means in Tapo
Remote live view is an authenticated Tapo account function: the app connects while you are away from home after the account has been accepted. The key security controls are therefore the unique TP-Link password, Two-Step Verification, trusted-device list and camera-sharing permissions.
There is no universal off switch documented for every model
TP-Link’s guidance reviewed for Tapo does not document one remote-access disable switch that applies to every camera model. Do not assume that a router setting or an app toggle with a similar name will disable all off-home access. Instead, decide who should be able to authenticate and remove every path that is no longer needed.
- Change the TP-Link password if it may be known outside your household.
- Require Two-Step Verification for new devices.
- Remove unfamiliar or retired trusted devices.
- Revoke camera shares that are no longer appropriate.
- Check that SD-card access is granted only to people you intentionally authorized.
Balancing convenience and exposure
Leaving remote viewing available is convenient for checking a home while traveling, but it increases the importance of account hygiene. If you do not need remote viewing, you can still apply the controls above and avoid sharing access; whether a particular model offers an additional local-only setting must be confirmed in that model’s documentation. Do not claim that remote access has been disabled unless the app or the camera’s official instructions provide a model-specific control and you have verified its effect.
Best Value
- 360° Visual Coverage & 1080p Full HD Live View: Provides 360° horizontal & 130° vertical viewing range to cover every corner. Reveals clear and sharp images with more details. The camera's field of view is greater than the mechanical pan/tilt range.

- Two-Way Audio w/ Customizable Sound Alarm: With high-quality microphone and speakers, activate 2-way audio, push-to-talk, anytime via the Tapo app. Additionally, record your customized audio as an alarm to extend your usages.
7. Respond to suspected unauthorized access
Use this order when an unknown device, unexpected verification message or unexplained camera activity appears:
- Change the TP-Link password to a new, unique value generated and stored by a password manager.
- Keep or re-enable Two-Step Verification and confirm that the verification destination is an account you control.
- Remove unknown trusted devices under Login Security > Trusted Devices.
- Review camera sharing and revoke invitations you cannot justify.
- Check the camera and router connection after any Wi-Fi-security change, using the exact model’s compatibility information.
- Sign in again only on devices you recognize, then watch login activity for further unfamiliar entries.
Do not respond to an unexpected verification request by approving it. A code is meant to confirm an action you initiated, not to authorize someone else’s attempt.
8. A maintenance routine that keeps the settings effective
- Review trusted devices whenever you replace a phone, reset a tablet or stop using a browser.
- Remove camera shares when a guest, contractor or former resident no longer needs them.
- Change the account password after any suspected disclosure or reuse.
- Check the exact camera model before upgrading the router to WPA3.
- Keep the email or notification channel used for Two-Step Verification secured and reachable.
These checks address different failure modes. The password and Two-Step Verification protect identity, trusted-device review limits persistent sessions, sharing controls other people’s permissions, and Wi-Fi encryption protects the camera’s connection to the home network. Applying all four layers is more reliable than relying on a single setting.

Menu placement can change between Tapo App versions, so the profile entry may not look exactly like Me on every phone. The security concepts remain the same: open the account’s login-security area, locate Two-Step Verification and Trusted Devices, and use the camera’s sharing control rather than distributing the primary credentials. WPA3 support cannot be inferred from the app alone; verify the specification for the exact camera model before changing the router.
