A dual-membrane pump designed for tangential flow filtration (TFF) is drawing attention because its maker says it produces continuous, non-pulsatile flow and reduced shear. In an October 2026 announcement, VentriLabs reported lower ammonia and lactate levels and an average 25% increase in IgG antibody productivity in an externally conducted comparison during continuous TFF perfusion. Those are company-reported results, not a universal performance guarantee: the announcement does not provide the test protocol, sample size, statistical analysis, or full dataset. A separate 2026 study describes a dual-membrane TFF cassette—not the pump—so the two technologies should not be conflated.
What the dual-membrane pump is reported to do
VentriLabs announced the DuaFLO BioPump on October 8, 2026, for upstream and downstream bioprocessing. The company describes a synchronized dual-membrane mechanism intended to deliver continuous, non-pulsatile flow. It says the design reduces shear compared with existing pump technologies. The announcement describes the product as entering early access and lists pressure and flow sensors, automated process control, integrated air management, automated priming, and a single-use cassette.
In an externally conducted head-to-head comparison during continuous TFF perfusion, mammalian cells were circulated using the DuaFLO and a magnetically levitated centrifugal reference pump. VentriLabs says the DuaFLO condition produced substantially lower levels of the stress metabolites ammonia and lactate, alongside an average 25% increase in IgG antibody productivity. The announcement does not disclose enough information to evaluate how broadly those outcomes apply: it omits the protocol, sample size, statistical analysis, and underlying data. It also does not establish results across different cell densities, viscosities, flow rates, or pressures.

How lower shear could matter in TFF perfusion
TFF moves process fluid along a membrane while selected components pass through it. In perfusion, cells are retained while culture medium and smaller dissolved substances can be exchanged. Pumping subjects the circulating material to fluid forces; for shear-sensitive cells, reducing stress may help preserve cell condition and, potentially, product output. The reported ammonia and lactate changes are relevant because they are indicators of cell metabolism, but the announcement does not provide measurements or methods that allow independent assessment of the reported differences.

Continuous, non-pulsatile flow is the mechanism the company emphasizes. The announcement does not provide enough technical detail to quantify how the synchronized membranes generate flow or to compare shear under controlled, matching operating conditions. A buyer assessing the claim should therefore look for test conditions and methods, not infer a general productivity gain from the mechanism or the 25% figure alone.
The pump and the 2026 dual-membrane cassette are different technologies
A peer-reviewed paper by Helling, Borujeni, Leuthold, Tindal, Fernandez-Cerezo, and Brower, first published June 2, 2026, describes a flat-sheet membrane cassette for single-pass TFF diafiltration, with optional simultaneous ultrafiltration (concentration). It is a separate technology from the DuaFLO pump; the available sources do not establish that the pump contains this cassette or that they are designed as a combined system.

The cassette study presents a configuration for exchanging buffer as feed passes through the membrane, without diluting the product stream as in conventional dilution-based exchange. It reports continuous removal of small contaminants below the membrane cutoff, including salts and media components, and says the cassette can be scaled up or down and handled similarly to classic TFF cassettes. The paper also describes a closed configuration suitable for aseptic or bioburden-controlled conditions. These are findings about the study’s cassette, not features established for the DuaFLO pump.

The study reports typical permeability of 10–60 L/(m²·h), feed flow rates of 1–7 L/(m²·h), and BSA and monoclonal antibody feed concentrations of roughly 3–80 g/L. Results depended significantly on process parameters. The PubMed abstract reports approximately 97% to greater than 99% buffer exchange at selected settings using 3, 5, or 7 diafiltration volumes and relatively low transmembrane pressure (TMP) of 50–350 mbar. These are experimental results under tested conditions, not guaranteed performance for other membranes, cassettes, feeds, or pumps.

The paper’s abstract describes its scope as “a novel flat sheet membrane cassette for TFF diafiltration with optional simultaneous ultrafiltration (concentration).” The published study and its PubMed record provide the relevant details.
Single-pass diafiltration versus recirculating diafiltration
In single-pass diafiltration, feed moves through a TFF cassette and buffer exchange occurs as the process stream passes the membrane. The 2026 study’s cassette is designed for this arrangement and can optionally concentrate the product at the same time. In recirculating diafiltration, the retentate is returned through the system while buffer is added to maintain or adjust volume. These are distinct process configurations; the cassette paper’s reported exchange percentages and operating ranges should not be applied to a recirculating setup or treated as pump performance data.

What to check before choosing a low-shear TFF pump
A pump comparison is useful only when the process conditions and measured outcomes are clear. For the DuaFLO-versus-reference comparison, the announcement identifies the application, comparator, metabolite trends, and productivity endpoint, but leaves key methodological details unresolved. Ask for information that lets you judge whether the results map to your process:

- Operating conditions: matched flow and pressure ranges, the measurement location, and whether performance was evaluated across the conditions relevant to your process.
- Evidence for shear and cell stress: how shear was measured or inferred, how ammonia and lactate were quantified, and whether the metabolite trends were consistent across replicates.
- Productivity endpoint: how IgG productivity was defined, the comparison period, replicate count, and statistical method behind the reported average.
- System fit: sensor and control capabilities, air handling and priming, single-use configuration, and availability for your intended process.
For a single-pass cassette, evaluate the target buffer exchange, diafiltration volumes, TMP, permeability, feed rate, protein concentration, membrane cutoff, and whether simultaneous concentration is needed. The study’s results varied with operating parameters, so its figures are starting points for process-specific evaluation rather than universal specifications.

Availability and evidence limits
As of the October 8, 2026 announcement, DuaFLO was described as entering early access. The announcement does not establish a price or general commercial availability. The published cassette paper supplies experimental ranges and results for its particular configuration; it does not establish performance for every TFF membrane, cassette, or pump.
Secondary trade coverage published October 12, 2026 also repeated the pump announcement’s claims, but it does not add the missing test protocol or underlying data. Manufacturing Chemist coverage is therefore not an independent validation of the performance figures.
