Short answer: Tandem OLED is LG Display’s multi-layer WOLED design, while QD-OLED starts with a blue OLED light source and uses quantum dots to create red, green and blue subpixels. In RTINGS’ tested comparison, Tandem OLED monitors delivered higher HDR brightness and held black levels better in brighter rooms. QD-OLED produced purer, more vivid bright colors. Neither technology wins every category, so the monitor’s exact generation, coating, resolution, refresh rate, uniformity, connectivity, warranty and regional price matter more than the panel label alone.

What the two panel names actually mean

The names describe different ways of producing color and light at the pixel level. Both are self-emissive OLED technologies: each pixel controls its own light instead of relying on a separate backlight. That enables very deep dark-room blacks, near-infinite contrast in suitable conditions, no haloing around bright objects and sharp motion. Those shared OLED properties do not tell you which monitor is better for your room or games.

Tandem OLED: a newer WOLED stack

LG Display calls its monitor implementation Tandem WOLED. Its tandem structure stacks multiple red, green and blue light-emitting layers to produce white light. The company’s fourth-generation Primary RGB Tandem design separates the former yellow-emitting layer into red and green, creating a four-layer emitter stack. RTINGS describes current Tandem OLED monitors as LG Display’s fourth-generation WOLED approach with a white subpixel and that four-layer stack.

The word “tandem” refers to the stacked emitter layers. It does not mean the panel is a QD-OLED panel or that every monitor using a tandem stack has identical image characteristics. Panel generation, pixel arrangement, coating and the monitor’s electronics still affect what you see.

QD-OLED: blue OLED plus quantum-dot conversion

QD-OLED uses a blue OLED light source and a quantum-dot layer to create red, green and blue subpixels. This conversion method is the reason QD-OLED is particularly strong at saturated bright colors in the RTINGS comparison.

QD-OLED subpixel layouts have changed between generations. RTINGS notes text fringing on the triangular layout found in the models it discusses. Treat that as a model- and generation-specific observation, not a permanent characteristic of every current or future QD-OLED monitor. Check independent testing or inspect the exact display before assuming how text will look.

Where the technologies differ in real use

What you notice Tandem OLED in the cited comparison QD-OLED in the cited comparison What to check on the exact monitor
HDR brightness The three tested Tandem OLED monitors reached about 550 cd/m² with real HDR content and more than 1,300 cd/m² on 2% HDR highlights. The tested QD-OLED models did not exceed 500 cd/m² with real HDR content or 1,100 cd/m² on 2% highlights. Review methodology, panel generation, screen size, HDR window size and firmware. These are RTINGS review findings, not universal panel specifications.
Black levels in a bright room The evaluated Tandem OLED models showed a less noticeable rise in blacks. Black areas can rise and look purple when ambient light reflects from the panel. Room lighting and the screen coating can change the result substantially.
Bright-color purity Close to QD-OLED in color volume in the comparison, but not as strong in the most saturated bright colors. Stronger bright-color purity, especially in red and green, in the comparison. Calibration, color mode and the monitor’s own gamut implementation.
Dark-color uniformity Some tested models had noticeable dark-color uniformity problems. Results depend on the individual model and sample. Look for measurements and photographs of the exact model; do not infer uniformity from the panel family.
Motion and contrast Self-emissive OLED advantages: near-infinite dark-room contrast, no haloing and sharp motion. The same OLED advantages apply. Refresh rate, response tuning, variable-refresh support and input latency are product specifications, not consequences of the panel name alone.

The comparison behind these observations is RTINGS’ article, “Tandem OLED vs. QD-OLED: Which Monitor Panel Is Better?”. Its measurements describe the monitors tested for that review and its publication context. A new monitor can use a different emitter generation, coating or firmware.

HDR brightness: why Tandem OLED currently has an advantage in the test data

HDR performance is the clearest numerical advantage for Tandem OLED in the cited comparison. RTINGS measured approximately 550 cd/m² (the same unit as nits) with real HDR content on the three Tandem OLED monitors it had tested. Small 2% highlights exceeded 1,300 cd/m². The QD-OLED monitors in that test stayed below 500 cd/m² with real HDR content and below 1,100 cd/m² for 2% highlights.

Those figures should not be read as a guarantee that every Tandem OLED is brighter than every QD-OLED. The review sample, test windows, firmware, heat management and monitor electronics all matter. A monitor’s sustained full-screen brightness can be very different from a small highlight measurement, and a manufacturer’s peak figure can use a different test condition.

Manufacturer examples use different conditions

LG Display’s current Tandem WOLED monitor page lists a 27-inch, 540Hz QHD model with a claimed 1,500-nit peak brightness at an average picture level (APL) of 1.5%, plus a claimed 0.02ms gray-to-gray response time. These are manufacturer figures, not independent verification on that page. The small 1.5% APL condition is not directly comparable to a full-screen or real-content result.

In a June 27, 2025 announcement, LG Display said its 27-inch Primary RGB Tandem monitor panel reaches 1,500 nits at 1.5% APL, a 280Hz refresh rate and 99.5% color reproduction. That is a separate announced panel specification; do not combine its 280Hz figure with the 540Hz model’s specifications. The same release described Dynamic Frequency & Resolution (DFR), allowing up to 720Hz in HD from the 540Hz QHD panel. These are capabilities LG Display described for the announced panel, not a promise that every retail Tandem OLED monitor offers them. See the LG Display Tandem WOLED product page and the June 27, 2025 LG Display release for the stated conditions.

Bright-room performance and the coating question

If you play during the day or in a room with lamps behind you, black-level behavior can matter more than peak highlight brightness. RTINGS found that QD-OLED blacks can lift and appear purple under bright ambient light. The Tandem OLED models it evaluated showed a less noticeable rise. That does not make every Tandem monitor immune: the front coating, reflections, viewing angle and the amount of light in the room all influence the result.

When comparing two listings, identify the coating rather than assuming all OLED screens behave alike. A glossy surface may preserve a punchy image in controlled lighting but reflect windows and lamps. A matte or anti-glare surface can reduce distracting reflections while changing the perceived crispness and contrast of the image. Independent testing of the exact model is more useful than a generic “glossy versus matte” claim because manufacturers can implement coatings differently.

Choose by room first

  • Bright room, frequent daytime gaming: Give extra weight to tested black-level retention, reflection handling and sustained HDR behavior. The cited comparison favors Tandem OLED on the first two image-quality points.
  • Dark or controlled room: Both types can deliver OLED’s deep blacks and high contrast. Bright-color saturation and your preferred gamut may become more noticeable than ambient black lift.
  • Mixed lighting: Compare coating, measured black behavior and placement together. Moving the monitor away from a window can matter as much as changing panel technology.

Color: QD-OLED’s vivid highlights versus Tandem OLED’s close color volume

QD-OLED’s quantum-dot conversion gives it an advantage in bright-color purity in the RTINGS comparison, particularly for saturated reds and greens. This can make neon effects, colored lighting and highly saturated game scenes look more intense at high brightness.

The Tandem OLED model in that comparison came close in overall color volume, so the difference is not that one technology produces accurate color and the other cannot. Calibration, the selected picture mode, the game’s HDR mastering and the individual monitor’s gamut all affect the final image. The comparison is best understood as a tendency observed in tested models: QD-OLED had the stronger bright-color purity, while Tandem OLED remained competitive overall.

Do not treat a quoted color-reproduction percentage as an independent color-accuracy score. LG Display’s 2025 announcement cites 99.5% color reproduction for its 27-inch Primary RGB Tandem panel, but the release does not make that figure directly equivalent to the RTINGS color-volume measurements.

Uniformity and text rendering require model-level checks

Dark-color uniformity

RTINGS cautions that some Tandem OLED monitors it tested had noticeable dark-color uniformity issues. OLED’s pixel-level control does not guarantee a perfectly even near-black field across a large screen. Unit-to-unit variation, panel size and compensation behavior can affect what you see.

Before buying, look for near-black uniformity measurements and photographs from testing of the exact model. If a review reports a problem, check whether it is visible at your intended brightness and seating distance; a result on one sample is evidence to consider, not proof that every unit is identical.

Text fringing and subpixel layout

Subpixel arrangement affects desktop text, browser fonts and fine interface lines. RTINGS reports text fringing on the triangular QD-OLED layout in the models it discusses. Because QD-OLED layouts have varied by generation, verify the layout of the monitor you are considering rather than generalizing from an older display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical check is simple: read a detailed review, inspect close-up photographs and, if possible, view the monitor with your operating system’s normal scaling. A display that looks excellent in games can still be a poor fit if you spend most of the day reading small text.

Refresh rate, resolution and response time are monitor specifications

Panel type alone does not determine refresh rate, resolution, response time, adaptive-sync support, ports or input latency. Manufacturers can build different products around the same broad panel technology, and a faster model may trade resolution or other features for speed.

How to compare two actual monitors

  1. Confirm the panel generation. Record the manufacturer’s panel name, monitor model number and release date. “Tandem OLED” and “QD-OLED” cover more than one generation.
  2. Match resolution to your graphics hardware. A 540Hz QHD display demands a sustained frame rate that many systems cannot reach in demanding games. A slower, higher-resolution option may produce a better image at your normal settings.
  3. Read HDR measurements, not only peak-nit claims. Check real-content brightness, small-window highlights and any automatic brightness limiting. Keep the test window and APL condition attached to each number.
  4. Inspect coating and reflection tests. Note whether the surface is glossy, semi-gloss or matte and whether reviewers observed raised or tinted blacks under light.
  5. Check color and uniformity results. Look for bright-color measurements, near-black uniformity and any sample-variation warning.
  6. Verify text behavior. Find the subpixel-layout description and text-fringing photographs, especially for a monitor that will also serve as a work display.
  7. Compare gaming features separately. Verify adaptive sync, console compatibility, ports, bandwidth, HDR formats, input latency, overdrive behavior and the stand. None is guaranteed by the OLED panel category.
  8. Confirm warranty and regional stock. Prices, bundles, firmware and availability change by country. Use the exact model number when checking a listing and warranty terms.

Which panel should you choose?

Choose Tandem OLED when these priorities dominate

  • You play in a room where ambient light makes raised or purple-tinted blacks distracting.
  • You want the stronger HDR brightness results seen in the cited independent comparison.
  • You are considering a high-refresh QHD design and the exact monitor provides the ports and graphics performance you need.
  • You have found a model with acceptable dark-color uniformity in independent testing.

Choose QD-OLED when these priorities dominate

  • You play in a dim or controlled room and value especially vivid, saturated bright colors.
  • You prefer the color presentation measured in the RTINGS comparison, particularly for red and green.
  • The specific QD-OLED model offers the resolution, refresh rate, coating and connectivity that fit your setup better than the available Tandem options.
  • You have checked its subpixel layout and are comfortable with any text-fringing behavior reported for that generation.

When the answer is “compare the models, not the labels”

Two monitors using different OLED designs can be closer than two monitors using the same design. A newer QD-OLED with a better coating may suit a bright room better than an older Tandem model with poor reflection handling. Conversely, a Tandem monitor with strong HDR electronics can be a better choice for games with bright highlights even if a particular QD-OLED has more saturated color.

Use the panel category to narrow the field, then make the decision from measured behavior, complete specifications and the conditions in which you actually play.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The RTINGS comparison establishes a useful direction for the tested sample: Tandem OLED had the HDR-brightness and bright-room black-level advantages, while QD-OLED had the bright-color-purity advantage. It does not establish a permanent winner for every future generation, screen size or monitor design.

LG Display’s brightness, refresh-rate and response-time figures are manufacturer claims under stated conditions. Samsung’s G61SH specifications come from a dated announcement and may not describe availability in every region. Keep those qualifications with the numbers when comparing listings.

LG Display executive Hyeon-woo Lee described OLED monitors as gaining market share because of “perfect black levels and fast response times – capabilities fundamentally unattainable by LCD monitors,” in the company’s June 27, 2025 press release. That is LG Display’s manufacturer perspective, not an independent assessment. The independent buying decision still comes down to the exact monitor’s measurements and your room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Tandem OLED is the better starting point for a bright-room gamer who prioritizes HDR impact and more stable-looking blacks. QD-OLED is the better starting point for someone gaming in controlled lighting who wants the strongest bright-color purity. Both provide OLED’s core contrast and motion benefits. Compare the complete monitor—coating, HDR behavior, uniformity, subpixel layout, resolution, refresh rate, ports, warranty, price and local availability—before choosing.
