Tales of Tonbrook is the game behind Sapient Games’ “Stardew Valley meets Dungeons and Dragons” pitch. It combines academy life, farming, fishing, relationships and other relaxed routines with exploration, party-based tactical combat and missions. You can play a free HTML5 demo in a browser through the game’s itch.io page, or download the free Steam demo. The planned full Steam release is 2 November 2026, although that date may change.
What is Tales of Tonbrook?
Tales of Tonbrook is a life-sim/RPG hybrid set around Daverton Adventurer’s Academy. Your character receives an invitation to attend the school, then has to balance lessons, practical skills, paid missions and ordinary student life.
The game’s routine is broader than farming alone. You can fish, cultivate crops, work tables, loot, run a factory and pursue other ways of earning money. Between those activities, you explore a large world, search for hidden ruins, build relationships with students and other characters, and take on tactical battles with a party.

Sapient Games presents the project in pixel art with a lore-focused story. The result is designed around a deliberate contrast: calm daily activities and relationship building on one side, dangerous expeditions and turn-based-style party decisions on the other.

- Everything you need to start playing the world's greatest roleplaying game
- Presents the newest edition of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying game in a way that’s easy to learn and fun to play.
Where can you play it free now?
There are two free demo routes, with different access methods and scope:
| Version | How to play | Documented scope |
|---|---|---|
| Itch.io demo | Play the HTML5 build in a web browser | An actively developed browser demo |
| Steam demo | Download and play through Steam | One in-game season, equal to 28 in-game days |
The browser build is the quickest way to try the concept because it does not require an installation. The Steam version is useful if you prefer a desktop client, controller support and a conventional library entry. Neither demo is the complete game.
What do you do in the demo and planned game?
Create and develop a character
You create and customize a character, then improve skills by studying or practicing them. Progression is tied to both academy life and the practical demands of adventuring.

Pay for school through missions
Attendance is not presented as a purely cosmetic setting. Completing missions helps pay for schooling, giving everyday assignments a direct connection to character progression and the academy premise.
Choose between many income activities
Farming and fishing support a familiar life-sim loop, while waiting tables, looting and operating a factory offer different ways to make money. Those options let you decide whether your character spends more time on predictable work, exploration or riskier adventures.
Explore and fight as a party
Outside the academy, you explore a sizeable world and uncover hidden ruins. Combat is tactical and party-based, so missions are not limited to a single character trading attacks. Positioning, team composition and the skills you have developed are intended to matter.
Rank #3
Build relationships
Relationships with fellow students and other residents are a separate progression path. Social scenes sit alongside lessons, work and combat rather than replacing them, which is central to the game’s life-sim/RPG structure.

The comparison is Sapient Games’ own positioning, not an independent review or a claim that the game is an official crossover. The Stardew Valley side is represented by farming, fishing, social connections, routine work and a pixel-art setting. The Dungeons & Dragons side is reflected in academy-trained adventuring, missions, lore, exploration, hidden ruins and tactical party combat.
It is therefore better understood as a combination of design ideas than as a one-to-one copy of either property. Players who want only a relaxing farm routine may find the combat and mission systems more prominent than expected. Players seeking a traditional tabletop campaign should remember that this is a computer RPG with a life-sim schedule, not a licensed tabletop adaptation.

What changed in version 0.50?
Sapient Games’ version 0.50 development update expanded the browser build with several new locations, systems and scenes:
- Bellhaven: a new location to explore.
- Pawnshop: sells randomly found rare items.
- Farmer’s market: offers fresh produce.
- Story content: adds a new plot cutscene.
- Music: introduces two tracks.
- Relationships: adds a scene with Goranna.
- Controls: adds experimental touchscreen support and controller support for the web version.
- Skill fix: the “mug” skill is reported to work properly.
These additions show that the browser version is still changing, so menus, controls and available content can differ as development continues.
Is the demo the full game?
No. The Steam listing describes the free demo as a one-season slice, while the itch.io page identifies its browser version as an actively developed demo. The full Steam edition is planned for 2 November 2026, but a planned date is not a guarantee of release. Features may be added or changed before launch.

That distinction matters when judging the game. The demos are suitable for testing whether you enjoy the academy routine, skill development, exploration and combat mix; they should not be treated as a complete measure of the final story or world.
Who should try Tales of Tonbrook?
- Players who want farming, fishing and relationship systems alongside adventuring.
- People who like switching between low-pressure daily tasks and tactical missions.
- Fans of pixel-art RPGs with character progression and lore to uncover.
- Anyone who wants to test a game in a browser before committing to a future full release.
If you prefer a single-focused farming simulator, the academy costs, missions and combat may add more complexity than you want. If you want uninterrupted dungeon crawling, the school schedule and money-making activities may feel like a slower pace.
The Bottom Line
Tales of Tonbrook is available to try free through an HTML5 browser demo and a Steam demo. Its defining hook is the combination of academy life, farming and relationships with exploration and tactical party combat; the complete Steam game is planned for 2 November 2026.
