If Tales of Eternia Remastered crashes, refuses to detect a controller, or appears to lose a save, start by installing version 2.0.0 and restarting your platform. Bandai Namco’s launch notice explicitly asks players to apply the latest update before playing. The patch improves text and second-playthrough carryover, but its published notes do not claim a crash or save-corruption fix, so later troubleshooting must distinguish confirmed game information from general platform diagnostics.
The game is an enhanced version of the 2001 action RPG for Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam. This guide gives a platform-specific update checklist, safe checks for crashes and save errors, and controller steps for Steam, Steam Deck, PlayStation, and Xbox hardware without treating an unverified workaround as a proven defect fix.
What is confirmed about the current release
Version 2.0.0 is the launch update for Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Bandai Namco’s notice says to apply the latest update before playing so that the game has the intended launch data.

What version 2.0.0 changes
- Japanese font-style selection is added.
- Titles are added to second-playthrough carryover.
- Some text problems are corrected.
The published notice does not list a fix for a reproducible crash, save corruption, missing saves, or controller detection. That does not prove that no player can encounter those symptoms; it means there is no title-specific repair for them in the launch notes reviewed here. Treat the procedures below as either official update steps or general diagnostic precautions, and keep that distinction in mind when judging whether a step worked.

Approximate launch-update download sizes
The following figures are approximate sizes stated in the launch notice. They describe the download for that platform and may include different combinations of game and update data; they are not permanent installation-space requirements.

An internet connection is required to apply the update. Before starting, leave more free space than the listed download so the platform can stage, unpack, and install it.
Install the update before diagnosing anything else
Use the platform’s normal update controls, then restart the platform. A download that is paused, queued, or still verifying is not a completed update, even if the store page shows the game in your library.

Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Open the game’s properties and check the Updates area to ensure automatic updating is enabled or start the pending download manually.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish. Do not launch the game while Steam is still allocating or verifying files.
- Quit and reopen Steam, then launch the game once to confirm that the update completed.
If Steam reports insufficient space, free at least the approximate amount shown in the table plus additional working room. The figure is not a promise that exactly that much permanent space will be consumed.
Switch 2 and Switch
- Connect the console to the internet and open the game from the HOME menu.
- Allow the software update prompt to complete; if no prompt appears, highlight the game, press the + or – button, choose Software Update, and select Via the Internet.
- Wait until the console returns to the HOME menu with the update finished, then restart the game.
Keep the console connected to power during the download. The Switch and Switch 2 figures differ substantially, so use the figure for your hardware when checking available storage.

PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
- Highlight the game on the home screen and press the Options button.
- Choose Check for Update and accept the download.
- Wait for copying or installation to finish before opening the game.
- Restart the console if the game still displays the old version or behaves as though the update is incomplete.
Do not interrupt the copying stage on PlayStation. The approximate download is 500 MB on PlayStation 5 and 1.3 GB on PlayStation 4.
Xbox Series X|S
- Open My games & apps, highlight the game, and open Manage game and add-ons.
- Check Updates and install the available package.
- Wait for the queue to finish, then quit and relaunch the game.
Plan for an approximately 8 GB launch-update download and additional temporary space while the console installs it.

No published launch note in the available evidence establishes a repeatable, title-specific crash bug or names a guaranteed crash workaround. After confirming version 2.0.0, collect enough detail to separate a game problem from an interrupted update, damaged local files, an operating-system issue, or an overlay conflict.
Record the failure precisely
- Platform and exact console or operating-system version.
- Game version shown by the platform.
- Whether the crash occurs at startup, during loading, in a menu, in a particular area, or during a battle.
- Whether it happens every time or only occasionally.
- The exact error text or code, if one appears.
- Whether the failure remains after a full restart and after version 2.0.0 finishes installing.
A repeatable location and error message are more useful to support than a description such as “it randomly stopped.” Do not delete saves while investigating a crash.
Safe PC checks on Steam
These are standard PC diagnostics, not fixes confirmed by Bandai Namco for this game.

- Exit the game and restart Steam. If Steam itself is unresponsive, close it completely and reopen it.
- Use the game’s properties to run Steam’s installed-file verification. Allow the process to finish before launching.
- Install the current graphics driver offered for your GPU and restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Temporarily close overlays and monitoring tools, such as chat, capture, performance, or frame-rate utilities, then test the game with only Steam running.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices and test one input device at a time. A faulty device or driver can interrupt a game during startup.
If the crash disappears after one of these changes, restore settings one at a time to identify the trigger. Do not describe the result as a permanent game fix unless the same change consistently prevents the crash.
Console checks
- Restart the console rather than relying only on sleep or standby.
- Confirm the update queue is empty and that the console has free storage beyond the download amount.
- Install any pending system software update.
- Test the game from a normal local profile and with other applications closed.
If only one title crashes while other games run normally, report the pattern with the version and location details above. If several games fail, investigate console storage, system software, or hardware instead of assuming a Tales of Eternia Remastered defect.
Save errors, missing saves, and apparent save loss
The launch patch notes do not claim a save-error or save-corruption repair, and the available evidence does not establish that lost saves are a common confirmed defect. A missing save can also result from using a different platform account, selecting a different profile, stopping a cloud-sync operation, or looking in a different save slot.
Protect the data you still have
- Do not uninstall the game, delete local data, or use a “clear saved data” option while trying to recover a save.
- Avoid powering off the platform or closing the game while the save indicator is active.
- Where the platform permits it, make a backup or allow the platform’s normal cloud synchronization to complete before further testing.
- Write down the exact error, the profile used, the slot number, and the last time the save was visible.
Check the simple account and slot causes
- Confirm that you are signed into the same console or Steam account used to create the save.
- Check every user profile on the device if more than one person plays on it.
- Open the game’s load menu and inspect each slot; a save may be present under a different slot than expected.
- On a platform with cloud saves, let synchronization finish before switching devices. If the platform asks whether to use local or cloud data, stop and note the timestamps before choosing.
- Try the game after the update is complete, but do not overwrite an older save merely to test whether loading works.
If an error persists, contact the platform’s support channel and Bandai Namco support with the exact wording, platform, game version, profile, slot, and whether the save existed before the update. These details allow support to distinguish an account or synchronization problem from a damaged file. None of the precautions above is a verified title-specific cure.
Controller not working on Steam
Steam lists Full Controller Support for Xbox Controllers and PlayStation Controllers. That is a compatibility claim for the Steam release, not a guarantee that every third-party pad, adapter, remapping utility, or driver will behave identically.

Use one controller and one input path first
- Quit the game.
- Connect the controller directly by USB or pair it through the platform’s normal Bluetooth process. Avoid testing a wired and wireless connection simultaneously.
- Disconnect other gamepads, fight sticks, steering wheels, and virtual-controller devices.
- Restart Steam and confirm that Steam recognizes the controller before launching the game.
- Launch the game and test the menu with the controller before opening another remapping or overlay program.
If the pad works in Steam but not in the game, open the game’s controller settings in Steam and test the selected Steam Input configuration. A conflicting profile can translate or suppress inputs. Try the default configuration first, then test a single alternate profile rather than changing several mappings at once.
When Steam Input causes a conflict
Steam Input can help a controller that a game does not recognize directly, but it can also conflict with manufacturer software or another virtual device. Test the game with the profile enabled, then with the profile disabled, changing only that one setting between launches. If one mode works, keep it and remove duplicate remapping layers. This is general Steam troubleshooting; the launch materials do not identify a Tales of Eternia Remastered controller bug.
Xbox controller guidance
The Steam listing explicitly names Xbox Controllers, so a compatible Xbox Wireless Controller is a reasonable replacement or backup when an existing pad, cable, or battery is suspect. Buying a different controller does not prove that the game software is defective or repair a damaged Steam configuration. Test the original pad on another game or device before replacing it.

The PlayStation listing describes offline play, one-player support, Remote Play, and vibration with DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controllers. It does not publish a game-specific workaround for a controller that fails to pair or respond.

- Close the game and pair the DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 through the console’s system-level controller settings.
- Test the controller in the console interface before reopening the game.
- If wireless input fails, connect the controller by a known-good USB cable and test again.
- Disconnect an extra controller and retest with one device.
- Restart the console if the controller works in menus but not after the game resumes from rest mode.
Vibration support confirms that the listed controllers are supported, but it does not guarantee that every cable, charging state, adapter, or third-party device will work. If the controller operates in other games but not this one after the update, provide the game version and connection method when contacting support.

Steam Deck and handheld checks
Steam marks the game as Verified for Steam Deck. Verification indicates that Valve considers the listed Deck experience compatible under its testing criteria; it does not eliminate problems caused by an incomplete download, a modified control layout, external accessories, or a system update still in progress.
- Install the game update while connected to power and a stable network.
- Restart the Deck after the update and before changing control layouts.
- Test the built-in controls with external controllers disconnected.
- Restore the game’s default controller layout if a community layout stops responding.
- If the game crashes, repeat the file-verification and overlay checks from the Steam section, then record whether the failure occurs in Gaming Mode, Desktop Mode, or both.
Do not infer that a Deck crash is a confirmed game-wide issue from one device. Include the Deck’s system version, game version, mode, and exact crash location in a report.

- Game version, including confirmation that 2.0.0 is installed.
- Digital or physical edition information when relevant.
- Exact error message, screenshot, or crash behavior.
- Location in the game, save slot, controller model, and connection type.
- Steps that trigger the problem and whether it occurs on every attempt.
- Diagnostics already performed, such as a restart, file verification, profile change, or wired-controller test.
Keep the original save and avoid repeatedly reproducing a suspected corruption event if doing so could overwrite data. The launch evidence supports updating first and documenting symptoms; it does not support claiming that crashes, save errors, or controller failures are established universal bugs.
